D-III All-Americans Watch

Re: D-III All-Americans Watch

Coach of the year is decided by the American Hockey Coaches Association.. They're usually announced in April.

Hint - he who wins 2 games next week will be the COTY.

...unless it's 1992 and your conference still hates your program for stuff that had absolutely nothing to do with you (a little OT, I know, but I'm still bitter at this one :o ).

Please explain.

From here:

...
1992, on the other hand, was just inexcusable. Ed Seney won SUNYAC Coach of the Year for bringing a Potsdam team coming off some bad seasons slightly above .500; Bob Emery did not win SUNYAC coach of the year for bringing a Plattsburgh State team coming off a postseason ban to a singularly dominant season that would eventually (after the conference vote, obviously, but the writing was on the wall) culminate in a 7-3 national championship win over a three-time defending champ. His exclusion was absolutely nothing more than political.

Sorry to get a all long-winded on the subject. It's just one that tends to bug me a bit :o

Re: D-III All-Americans Watch

There's no doubt that politics comes into play with awards such as these....or polls or rankings for that matter.

What Emery accomplished that year was significant, but I can go one better.

I can name a coach that started a program from scratch, won the regular season, and conference championship in that first year, setting the DIII record for a new program, and wasn't named coach of the year in that conference.:(

Re: D-III All-Americans Watch

I expect that there will be quite a few names from the FF teams in Minny that get the AA recognition this week.

Do you have substantiation for that charge?
Well there was that mysterious press release when Adrian first announced their acceptance into DIII hockey that said they had plans on moving the program to DI, but it disappeared quickly from the board. True or not Adrian has become a respectable program, and better then that they have helped a once laughable conference into at least being known as competitive.

At least someone can smell the underhandedness of this program. I find it amusing you all just assumed I meant they were participating in shady recruiting practices. While that may be true, the program was bought and paid for by the Arrington family among other wealthy alumni. Starting a program overnight giving them a beautiful facility, amazing locker rooms, top quality gear and luring a DI coach in to take over while landing themselves in the worst conference in Div. III hockey instead of remaining an independent. After all this, complaining about those "18 hour bus rides* through Mitch Albom via ESPN and shouting to the world their Div. III hockey domination. At what point down the road does it "make sense" that with how good Adrian is, they should be pushed to the front of the line to make the DI jump. Money is not a problem for them obviously. How many DI schools are closer to Adrian than DIII? Lots. How many recruits that were sitting on the DI/DIII fence did the coaching staff lure in with this logic? When Adrian investigated starting a DIII hockey program, they knew they would be forking huge money to have their team travel lengthy distances. What do they care? They are loaded with cash. What's the number one consideration when moving to DI? Cash and its investment in competing at the DI level. What if they don't get their way beating up on their MCHA foes, many of whom have kids straight from H.S. on their teams.... Well they will put it on Sportscenter and complain about it of course. Why did they join the MCHA rather than be an independent? As an independent, they would have to fight and scrap to get an NCAA bid. They would have to travel extremely long distances to play the top teams and get national recognition and bolster their SOS. Why not join the MCHA, get them the needed teams for an AQ and then slap around the worst teams and call yourselves amazing? Yeah, that sounds better.

The school screams pretentiousness, shady and *********gery for good measure. Their bought and paid for success doesn't impress me any. Stomping their feet on ESPN a few years ago only made them look foolish. Mitch Albom didn't include their SOS in that story, did he? I hope that students attend Adrian for the right reasons, and not false hope.

I don't know where to begin with that....you're right, its just not worth it. I hope he is not a danger to himself.

Let's get back to talking about what the thread was intended for "All American" awards. Skelley, Miller and Fogal get mentioned in that discussion definitely. Nothing "bought & paid for" though, just very talented BullDog seniors that deserve the recognition.

Re: D-III All-Americans Watch

So I come back this afternoon and read nothing of any substance at all, and more re-hashing of crap from 3-4 years ago. About what I expected. A family of alumni made a large donation to their alma mater. Wow. What a concept. And those seniors? They'll walk out of Adrian College in less than 2 months with their degrees. Will wonders ever cease? *shakes head*

Fogal may get 2nd team West honors, and while Skelly and Miller have a shot at joining him, I suspect that their decline in production will get in the way.
