D-I Outlook for 2011-2012: Offseason Musings and Beyond

Re: D-I Outlook for 2011-2012: Offseason Musings and Beyond

Are you serious, I don't see many higher end players choosing Union over these three schools if they decide to go the non-scholarship route. So a lack of shcolarships would certainly place them at a major disadvantage. I wasn't aware that they offered no scholarships, I thought it was a limited number. Can anyone confirm? Hux?

I believe that Union is a D3 school that was given clearance for their hockey programs to play D1, silmilar to Clarkson. Unlike Clarkson though, Union's administration made a decision many years ago to not offer Athletic Merit scholarships, only Academic scholarships and Financial Aid.

No scholarships at Ivy schools. No. Haven't been scholarships since League inception- 1950's.

Agree w. Trillium as to attracting young women (Union) when the program isn't succeeding on the ice. Take their 'sister' there nearby on the Mohawk- RPI. They too languished w. a losing lower tier team. They have seemed to pick themselves up by their boot straps here of late.

Commitment somewhere in the A D or Administration might need to become stronger w. Dutchmen?

Anyone know, can -WILL speak on that?
Is it only $?

Please tell us...

Yea but ivy league schools have financial aid policies that cover most expenses anyway. Theres been a lot of press about this I believe.

Oh, I think they have solid support from the administration, but academically they are a very strong school, with stiff admissions. That narrows your pool of candidates very quickly.

Re: D-I Outlook for 2011-2012: Offseason Musings and Beyond

While it has been mentioned that the biggest challenge for Union women is lack of scholarships, there are no scholarships for the men either. Yet Union's men are doing admirably. The difference between the two is the size of the prospect pool--there are more high calibre men wanting a shot at D1 (and presumably the opportunity of a pro career after that).
Another difference between the men's D-I game and that of the women is that the majority of the top tier of male players do not play four years of NCAA. That has the effect of narrowing the gap between the top and bottom teams. If a team such as Union can get their players to stay for four years, they can compensate for a talent disadvantage to some opponents by having an edge in experience. In women's D-I, almost all of the best players compete for four years, and a few have the advantage of a year, sometimes two, of national team centralization. A team like Union that doesn't attract these elite players is stuck facing them for all four years.

Re: D-I Outlook for 2011-2012: Offseason Musings and Beyond

Per the "and beyond" portion and regarding 2011-2012 division I competition:

North Dakota at Boston University

Quinnipiac at Mercyhurst

Providence at Bemidji State

The three match ups of particular interest ahead next weekend. All are worth keeping an eye on. After seeing the box scores out of Grand Forks this weekend it'll be very interesting to see what transpires at BU. Sioux fans are pretty excited after this weekend...with suggestions of being under rated in the WCHA pre season poll...or at least a few notions they'll prove better than #4 ultimately. Good early test for both.

LIndenwood heads to Mankato. Will they still be looking for goal #1?

I hope not.

Thread this... like anyone cares at this time smart guy.
Like I or anyone else cares about your infantile, psychotic obsession with my free tickets and your childish attempts to fabricate some sort of character indictment...for six plus months...smart guy. Oh yeah...just a reminder.

Check that thread title again...you're missing something.

Anytime now you'll give me a red chiclet for "stirring it up."

Re: D-I Outlook for 2011-2012: Offseason Musings and Beyond

Box score credits Wisconsin with 72 shots on goal to 3 for Lindenwood.

This suggests that Wisconsin could have played 5 against 6 without a goaltender and still won 13-3.

Welcome to Division I indeed.

Wickenheiser(Lindenwood)- is that as in, Wickenheiser?
