Culvers Camp Randall Hockey Classic: Michigan vs UW.. Brrrrrrrr!

Re: Culvers Camp Randall Hockey Classic: Michigan vs UW.. Brrrrrrrr!

Hopefully they don't start doing this every year, that would just get to be too much. My co-worker suggested they do it similar to the Badger football team going to Hawaii every 4 years. That way you could use it as a recruiting tool and an incentive to stick around all 4 years, instead of leaving early (but the players would probably take the NHL money over playing 1 outdoor game)

Huh? How does that keep the kids around all four years? If Wisconsin were playing in Hawaii in Tebucky "Buck" Bagerton's Senior year, maybe. But if they played in Bagerton's Sophomore year, what incentive does "Buck" have to stick around two years after that?

(Mostly I wanted to use the persona of Tebucky "Buck" Bagerton)

Well... they thought they were going to sell out to the tune of 89k fans... instead, they're going to wind up around 50k.

I've got 39,000 reasons the Athletic Department won't try this again for a decade or five.

Re: Culvers Camp Randall Hockey Classic: Michigan vs UW.. Brrrrrrrr!

That sums it up pretty well.

The technical answer is they didn't want a league game played outdoors, and had issues with who would be in control of the event.

But the original proposal was just as STATEdude3 described it, and it was a no brainer.

There was an article later on that stated McLeod's primary reason for rejecting the matchup was because they weren't going to have replay. Thus by league rule that all league games must have replay capabilities, he fiirmly denied the proposal.

With how popular these outdoor games are, I think youre wrong on that one. Even at only 50,000; it still far outsells what the Kohl can handle.

On the back of the ticket. The $20 ticket?
Yup. The "tailgate party" ends at 4:30 though and concessions will be available for purchase but no beer will be sold. At that point, the UW Fieldhouse becomes little more than a warming house. No beer, no special events going on.

Let me see if I have this right...we're actually paying $20 for the food and beer, and it's not actually free?!? ;)

Hopefully Goody starts this game. If Belly flop Bennett is in there I might puke.

Well, a perfect storm of things happened that won't make it a sell out which the Athletic Dept did/didn't have control over:

1. Not being permitted to have the game vs. Minnesota
2. Tickets were too expensive
3. Michigan and Michigan St. finalized an agreement to have an outdoor game next year just a few months after this deal was finalized. This is gonna keep a majority of Michigan fans to stay home and wait til next year.
5. Being mediocre for 3 seasonss diluted some of the bandwagoners.
6. It was scheduled too close to the Lambeau game.
7. The BC-BU has really no effect on ticket sales IMO, but it does lose some of its luster.

What they should of done IMO:

1. The UW ath. dept. should of looked more into what Michigan was going to do next year. If they would've known they had their own outdoor game with MSU in the works, I don't think Wisconsin schedules them.

2. Instead of Michigan(because of their own game next year), I would've picked Notre Dame or North Dakota(non-conference) since they only play them twice this regular season. North Dakota fans travel extremely well and for something like this-even more so. Notre Dame is a "name" school has a large alumni base and media market close by in Chicago. Playing Minnesota five times during the regular season seems a bit much imo.

3. Set the price at $12. If they really wanted to set an attendance record why the heck did they make the tickets so high?

You hit it on the head with the last point. Also, is anyone clued into the extra costs associated with doing the game at Camp Randall vs. a weekend at the Kohl? Obviously its alot more, but by how much?

In my mind, the athletic department thought this was an 89k slam dunk, and took it for granted that it would be. The success of previous outdoor games, was, in my humble opinion, the beginning of the cluster**** that is/will be the CRHC. Sorry to sound bitter, but I just can't help thinking about what this COULD have been.
