Covid 2023

To be fair, the people I follow here and there for vaccine info aren't convinced the new version is particularly necessary for otherwise healthy people who are up to date (meaning mainline two plus 1-2 boosters). There's no reason not to, and lots of reasons to do it, but short of situations like DGFs or if you're traveling or whatnot, healthy people don't get gigantic benefits from it.

That said, I'll get it. I have a handful of shows this fall, may as well get some additional prophylactic help.

Just like you said, there's no reason not to. It might even save someone else's life.

Actually, I'm curious about the math there. If you get sick, how many people will you "chain-infect" with like three or four generations? What about ten? What are the odds someone in that ten-generation tree dies from it?

anyways, no reason not to. Might save you a week of misery or reduce a week of misery to a a couple days.

R0 is the measure of infectiousness in a population with zero assumed immunity. In other words, it's the fielding independent pitching version. Re is the measure of how it is "effectively" at a given time, due to things like levels of population immunity or population density, etc. It's the "regular" ERA version. Since Re changes constantly and is extremely hard to actually measure, as a non-clinical person, I find R0 easier to use since it tells the story about the virus itself. In either case, the number is basically how many people you'll spread it to. If it's greater than 1, the virus will spread. If it's less than 1, it wont.

A decent primer: https://www.cebm.net/covid-19/when-...tion-to-viral-reproduction-numbers-r0-and-re/

Anyway, I can't find good sub-variant details so this is based on older info. I've seen R0 for Omicron range from 5-8. There was some stories going around last year that the BA.5 sub-variant had some ridiculous >18 R0, but that was a misreading of findings. I've seen people reference XBB and some of the newest fun sub-variants hovering around 12 but I have no earthly idea how accurate those are.

For perspective, here's some fun viruses we all know and love:
  • Measles – 12-18
  • Chickenpox – 10-12
  • Polio – 10-12
  • HIV/AIDS – 2-5
  • SARS – 0.19-1.08
  • MERS – 0.3-0.8
  • Common Cold – 2-3
  • Ebola – 1.56-1.9
  • Seasonal Influenza – 0.9-2.1
  • 1918 Influenza Pandemic – 1.4-2.8
  • 2009 Influenza Pandemic – 1.4.1.6
So even at the low projections of Omicron, it's in some pretty rarified company.

Well, I got the 'rona again. Started not feeling well yesterday, and test just now confirmed it.

Started out exactly the same way as the last time. Was coughing a lot yesterday, felt like I was coming down with a cold. As I usually get sick at the change of the seasons, fall and spring, I didn't think much of it. But figured I better test anyway.

As I said, not too bad. Feels like a cold. No fever, but that could be because the cold meds I took are tamping it down. I do feel a little warm and flushed at times.

Recover quickly, Cafe friend.

Dr. Mrs. got her shots yesterday and she's not doing wonderfully today, but she is convinced it's the flu shot, not the COVID, that is getting her. (How can she tell? I have long since ceased to think about these mysteries. I merely accept her certainty.)

I'm going to spread out my shots this year. Getting the covid-flu-RSV-pneumonia superfecta

One a week until the gophers win a title.

Did the handcrafted COVID-flu-shingles cocktail today, all in the side I don’t sleep on. Not even arm pain so far…..fingers crossed.

Feel better rufus.

I can't believe I avoided catching it after going to two absolutely packed shows last week, surrounded by coughing people.

The Dr Mrs. sounds like a Conspiracy Theorist. Does she hang around with those quacks like Marty Makary? Is she a Doctor Doctor? Or a REAL Doctor like Dr Jill?

Well, I got the 'rona again.

Wait, no, this cant be true. 1) You have had all of your boosters. 2) The new booster is "Excellent". 3) You always wear your mask because a mask is the 2nd best defense against the Wuhan Flu (after the highly effective vaccine + boosters).

Must be a false positive, please re-test again. Brandon said to let him know an address and he will send out "free" test kits. He said this during his passionate intro for LL Jay Cool J, the Boy with the serious biceps.

You daredevil you, swannie ... and then you come on here and gloat about it to all your fellow germphobes?!?

Keep this risky behavior up, and you're liable to end up on someone's "ignore" list tsk tsk ...

Watching Cassidy Hutchinson on The View stating that the administration handled Covid wrong. In fact Mark Meadows said that they killed Herman Cain.

Interesting.

And just today I saw a Tweet from Colonel Huckleberry Sanders that Arkansas will be a free State. Free from all Vaccine mandates, masks, and lockdowns. Can't wait for the next pandemic. You know it's going to be just like the Weather. More and more frequent.

Well we know where the next big measles outbreaks will be...

I also saw an Elon Musk tweet today. Today. People still have no clue what the Covid Vaccine does. We've had this Flu Vaccine for decades and they are pretty similar (not in design) in use, effectiveness, etc. I don't really understand why there is such a disconnect.
