Re: COVID-19 - Part 2

Keep drinking that kool aid. Your dear leader will always tell you the truth.

Sorry Wayuphere, like toilet paper, the follow the leader Kool-aid has been low on stock since in Nov 8, 2016 and officially out of stock since 11:59 Jan 20, 2017. Once again, like toiler paper, there are rumors of it coming back, but then Forgetful Joe "misremembers" where he hid the recipe. :)

Re: COVID-19 - Part 2

Catching up on the overnight mailbag, and I do see we finally have a WINNER on last week's quiz!! :)

Just a wild guess here. All led by Democrats?

Yes indeed, you are correct buoldtimer (and BTW my condolences to you and my many BU friends for the plague that's descended upon your school's reputation, due to the rise of recent BU alum AOC). Here is a recap, for those of you keeping score at home:

As of a (Friday), 60.8% of all deaths in 5 locations:

NYC: Mayor Bill DeBlasio (bonus points NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo)
New Jersey: Gov. Phil Murphy ((bonus points Newark Mayor Ras Baraka)
Michigan: Gov. Kay Whitmer/ (bonus points Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan)
Louisiana: Gov. John Bel Edwards (bonus points New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell)
Washington: Gov. Jay Inslee (bonus points Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan)

As our winner, buoldtimer will be receiving a free year's subscription to the now-infamous Effingwoods Hockey Almanac, and an invitation to our upcoming podcast (more on that just a little later), plus a guided tour of the WIS Estate in the bucolic hamlet of Effingwoods NH - The Way Life Should Be. :) :) :)

… but into every day, I suppose a little rain must fall. And this morning, from the wrong side of the border, we have long-time USCHO poster rufus who comes out with this little "how do you do" ...

Jesus Christ, Chuck, you really have drunk the Trumper Kool-Aid, haven't you? Guess it's to be figured as you're the perfect demographic, an old white guy.

Tell me, are you a racist white supremacist **** as well?

As the "Church Lady" would be known to say in moments like these back in the day … "Well, isn't that special?!?" :rolleyes: Guys like acs64, walrus and rufus have been almost like extended USCHO family, and I'm pretty sure one of them probably posted the phrase that initially led to the adoption of my "WIS" moniker. Sure, we've had back-and-forths about asterisks ( * ) and chokes, with a little retroactive financial aid on the side from time to time … but I always felt it was a fun thing, and I've met more than a few (including wally - not sure about acs64 or rufus, apologies if I've forgotten?) during treks to the Downeast. It's clear we all have different views of the world, but no one ever let it get in the way of rambunctious fun on the USCHO boards...

… until last night anyway, rufus had to be the a-hole who peed in the punchbowl, apparently threatened that someone might have the gall to disagree with his view of life. See, this is what identity politics does to you, boys and girls. And I was about to say "You get one old white guy calling another old white guy a racist" … and then it occurred to me - I never for a second gave thought to "What color/race is rufus?" Because I never cared. Technically, the percentage of folks I "know" on these boards that I've never met in person is pretty high, so I don't know those answers, either. And I don't care, frankly. But it seems like we've veered from the following quote, and NOT in a good way:

I have a dream that my children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

That's hardly the only great quote that Dems used to believe in, but no longer behave like they do. We'll revisit additional ones as circumstances dictate. In the meantime rufus … blow it our your a%$#.

On a lighter note, this one comes from Darius, who also took the identity politics route, but in a more entertaining direction ...

It is a little known fact that "Chuck" is actually a born female now gender neutral teenager who constantly trolls the UNH threads. We let them because:
1.) Our threads are welcoming tolerant safe spaces and
2.) They have an uncanny ability to predict scores.
Think what you will about Chuck, but they do know hockey.

<s>We all</s> I got a good laugh out of that one, Darius - well done!! :D

Finally … as seemingly promised weeks ago, but actually only since the end of last week … in times like these, sometimes you look for guidance from unusual places to try to gain insight into the events of the day, and how it will impact the world. My personal go-to-guy in such circumstances is none other than Nostradamus, whose spirit has been a frequent visitor to the WIS Estate over the years. Mike (as friends call him) allowed me to share his visions for 2020 via the following link:

https://wisehoroscope.org/nostradamus-2020/

Highlights, presented in a non-partisan way (FWIW, Mike is as middle-of-the-road as you get):

(1) Big War in the Middle East (still in play, as seemingly always);
(2) Economic Crisis in 2020 (Mike's reasoning is off, but bottom line is nailed);
(3) President Trump will Win Again (his words - not mine);
(4) Prophesy of a Plague (you see, this is why Nostradamus is Nostradamus);
(5) Wildfires on a Staggering Scale (Australia? Mike nails another one);
(6) A Great Empire Will Fall (British leaving the EU via Brexit?);
(7) England Will Have a New King (probably like the Middle East War thing - still in play);
(8) Record Number of Storms (still early - no data - one for the climate cultists);
(9) Sea Level Rise (another for the climate folks - see, he's pretty objective, no?); and
(10) Destructive Earthquakes (always in play, especially along the Pacific Rim "Ring of Fire")

Lots to chew on there. And before you folks scamper off to make sure you've got QE2 listed in your "death pool" (ditto Prince <s>COVID-19</s> Charles), please note that I'll be inviting Nostradamus to the first-ever Effingwoods Hockey Almanac podcast live from the WIS Estate sometime in April, and chew over his amazing posthumous ability to write vague quatrains for modern day folks to interpret in highly flattering ways. I'll be asking Mike to weigh in on other lighter issues, including what we can expect from the Hockey East 2020/2021 season. Enjoy, and be back later!! :)

Gotta love it when the INtolerant left plays the race card Chuck. Usually means they have no logical or reasonable leg to stand on!

Re: COVID-19 - Part 2

Interesting timeline being reported by Reuters.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-...housands-streamed-in-from-china-idUSKBN21N0EJ

The CDC was first alerted by its counterpart in China on January 3. It had the power to act on its own to check passengers coming from China (no presidential authority needed) but did not do so until (meekly) January 17 and more robustly on January 28. Why did they not act sooner? What information were they waiting for from China? Why were they waiting? Was the CDC waiting for the World Health Organization? They could have acted on their own authority.

I was in Hong Kong heading back to Boston on January 3 and it was already being communicated with alarm by the Hong Kong authorities. I believe they shut down the train that came directly from Wuhan to Hong Kong shortly thereafter. Did our CDC contact other sources?

This article supports my contention that the CDC really "Fuxkxd Up" big time on this one. While we are debating presidential politics, we should also be talking about accountability. There does not seem to be any for those in our federal government.

If this were China, the head of the CDC would be taken out and shot.

Tried to paste a link of Fauci who apparently downplayed the threat of the virus as late as January 21st!

Funny how that happens, eh e.cat? Call it virtue-signaling, call it projection … I call it garbage.

Oh, and lookie here, another race-baiter slimed in under the door right before your post ...

For one, he'd most likely let Dr. Fauci take the lead on this and not make a "daily update" into a goddammed Klan rally about himself.

Yes, I suspect given Biden's current condition, there would be a lot - A LOT - of delegation of tasks, should the 45-60 days we're shut down for with this "test drive of socialism" appeal to the masses, beyond the coastal so-called elites and their useful idiots. The idea of unelected "expert" officials actually running the country probably appeals to most Democrat/Socialist fantasies, while it scares the living crap out of everyone else. Because being an "expert" in one area does not make one an "expert" in everything.

Here's an on-point article from a former Minnesota GOP Congressman touching on that point ...

https://alphanewsmn.com/gutknecht-the-problem-with-experts/

We now see that shared sacrifice has its limits. The fact is that half of our citizens are being asked to bear the costs of “flattening the curve.” The other half continue to get their pensions, social security and salaries.

Would government workers be as quiet if they were furloughed in proportionate numbers to the layoffs in the private sector? Would some professors be demanding that colleges reopen if they weren’t getting paid?

This is not to second guess or say that these experts are bad people. They are well-intentioned. We don’t have to question their motives. But, it is fair to question the recommendations from experts when they create enormous financial pain. Pain which they will never personally feel. Would those experts make the same recommendations if they were forced to lay off a third of their associates? People they know and work with?

Very fair questions we were discussing a month ago on the previous thread ...

Ahh, the trumpettes come out and start blaming everyone accept orange man.

Biden verbal miscues vrs the 4th grade idiots verbal miscues? Oh my, would love to see that list. The few Biden has made at least are words that he has heard before and understands their meaning and proper usage.
Trump has the vocabulary of, yep, a 4th grader and clearly reads words off a prompter that means nothing to him. Go off script and adlib? A true sick comedy show at that point.

The Trump Virus was not a big deal, then became a war that he was going to lead us to victory to, and now, classic not my fault, here’s $1200 remember me come November.

What a legacy he is making for himself. Willingly allowed thousands to die while he twiddled his thumbs. Stocks crashing got his attention (ain’t that a surprise), and now he is responsible for a Great Recession or worse.
All on his watch. No one else’s.

Definitely interesting questions. However, they have no bearing whatsoever on the rightness or wrongness of those decisions. Either shutting down was the right thing to do, or it wasn't. Whether person X or Y or Z would have made that call is interesting, but only academically. Since I believe that shutting down was the right call AND I agree with your insinuation that people with more skin in the game would not have made that call, then I'm glad we have expert policymakers who are freed to do the right thing without worrying about whether "I got mine."

Who should be making the call? A pizza parlor owner? So that he can get his $50k of profit for the year while hundreds of thousands die around him?

Greed is good....to a point.

Notice how they always go after the individual? Always a slam on the poster they disagree with and throw in some personal put down.

Well Zippy, you DO NOT KNOW the sacrifices people are making. Once again, “I, ME, MINE” is your underlying theme. Disgusting.

Re: COVID-19 - Part 2

End of days . Our downfall will be having a moron like Trump pretending that he understands this virus better then anyone.

Re: COVID-19 - Part 2

The Wuhan Virus death toll has continued to grow in Maine to 11 at last count (against the 7 total snowmobilers as reported, and 277 Maine opioid deaths in the first 9 months of 2019). I know, exponential growth, so it appears the people of Maine not following the rules are helping us to inch closer to the, whats the number? 1.1 - 2.7 Million US deaths, 244,000 estimated deaths 100,000 estimate for the US.

After the first 4 Months in the US, the Wuhan Virus death toll is approx. 10,000 (please give me the obligatory link to the number as of 30 seconds ago) nationwide, and worldwide it is 71,000. A good idea would be to place these numbers (with space left over) in perspective for COLLEGE HOCKEY FANS;

US Deaths vs. Engelstad Arena capacity of 11,640

Worldwide Deaths vs. Cold War Game (Mich St vs Mich @ Spartan Stadium) attendance of 74,554

Before you go jumping all over me, if you would like to look at the breakdown of deaths vs underlying Health conditions, you can go to this right wing propaganda site (before Trump furloughs the staff and shuts it down) and dive in:

https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/69/wr/mm6913e2.htm

SPOILER ALERT - I am giving FULL CREDIT that social distancing, self-quarantining, cancelling of events and other measures ARE helping to slow the spread of the WUHAN Virus. All of these, and washing your hands/not touching your face (though one could also include big city (democratic) mayors no longer telling the populace they are racists if they forgo certain "ethnic" events).

The bottom line, this is not a death sentence like the MSM is portraying.

Confirms what I had heard about the CDC. One giant f-up on their part. Center for Disease Control. CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL. Let that sink in.

As far as the Maine snowmobiler death count goes, I had a total of 11 deaths caused by reckless and no doubt inebriated driving this winter. So in my book the Wuhan Bat Flu death count in Maine has not surpassed that number yet. But I have every confidence it will. Just wild azz guessing here but I think we'll end up with somewhere around 75,000 deaths nationwide before its all said and done in a couple years or so. I hope not, but seems reasonable to me.

So my question is, did it originate in a lab as a result of an error or did someone at the wet market just decide to snack on fried or raw bat thinking that would make a nice lunch ?

Bush was prepared... Obama dropped the ball... Trump was right that Obama left a mess but he did not fix the mess in his first two years. Probably too busy fighting Miller and Impeachment.

If you want to play the political game to blame the guy you want to blame, then sure blame Obama who wanted them, and ignore your Trump guys like Meadows, Jim Jordan and McCarthy who blocked that.

After using up the swine flu emergency funds, the Obama administration tried to replenish the stockpile in 2011 by asking Congress to provide $655 million, up from the previous year’s budget of less than $600 million. Responding to swine flu, which the CDC estimated killed more than 12,000 people in the United States over the course of a year, had required the largest deployment in the stockpile’s history, including nearly 20 million pieces of personal protective equipment and more than 85 million N95 masks, according to a 2016 report published by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine.

“We recognized the need for replenishment of the stockpile and budgeted about a 10% increase,” said Dr. Nicole Lurie, who served as the assistant secretary for preparedness and response at the Department of Health and Human Services during the Obama administration. “That was rejected by the Republican House.”

Republicans took over the House of Representatives in the 2010 midterms on the Tea Party wave of opposition to the landmark 2010 health care reform law, the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. The new House majority was intent on curbing government spending, especially at HHS, which administered Obamacare.
