Covfefe-19 The 12th Part: The Only Thing Worse Than This New Board Is TrumpVirus2020

How dare you insult catastrophic failures in such a way!!! That is way too nice a term for how badly we screwed this up...

I am not accusing anyone other than China and Russia (and Trump) of actively working to distort numbers, but I remain highly skeptical of any densely populated area with minimal impact. There are some excellent success stories - Australia, S. Korea, Taiwan, etc. And there are some catastrophic failures (the US).

Singapore is a highly structured country with very few entry points. Also:

Singapore introduced what was considered one of the largest and best-organised epidemic control programs in the world, along with fellow neighbours South Korea and Vietnam.[SUP][9][/SUP][SUP][10][/SUP] Various measures have been taken to mass test the population for the virus, such as isolating any infected people as well as introducing contact tracing apps such as TraceTogether (both app and token) and strictly quarantining those they had close contact with. Such measures has helped avoid further lockdowns after the end of the circuit breaker measures in June 2020.

The first line of defense was to reduce importation of the disease, namely by conducting temperature screening at ports of entry. In the beginning, the screening and decision making thereafter, in most countries, was poorly managed, without serious follow-up on travelers presenting with high temperatures. In addition, Singapore distributed masks for each household to be worn in case of asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2-positive individuals so as to protect the people around them. Not limited to ports of entry, Singapore extended screening measures to community level, by conducting temperature checks at restaurants and shop entrances.

Additionally:

Singapore drew many lessons from the SARS-CoV outbreak of 2002, which, although associated with low morbidity and mortality, exposed the ill-preparedness of the country to deal with pandemics. To bridge this gap, the government did not just lay in wait because SARS-CoV was over; instead, they went on to establish 900 rapid response public health preparedness clinics (PHPCs) across the country, ear-marked for improved response to pandemics and outbreaks (Singapore Ministry of Health, 2020a). The PHPCs serve as an intermediary between the community and hospitals, screening all patients with flu-like or pneumonia symptoms into low-risk and high-risk groups. The high-risk group is referred to an infectious disease hospital for further assessment and management.

Screening all patients with flu-like symptoms was important, because at first appearance, the symptoms of COVID-19 were poorly defined and often confused with seasonal influenza. As such, the potential for misdiagnosis translating to gross under-reporting was high, which has led to some researchers using the excessive deaths as a better estimator for COVID-19-related mortalities (The Economist, 2020).

Thailand basically locked the country down. If you want in you have to quarantine for 14 days. Trump's "China ban" wasn't much of a ban at all, came too late and wasn't widespread enough.

Don't forget ma boy!

Boy has Dump laid that old myth to rest.

Middle Muddling Muricans are just as much bovine desperate for a master as any other group. They just want that master to look and talk a certain way.

Americans' "anti-authoritarian strain" is about as sincere and effective as a Mentos commercial.

Americans are anti-authoritarian when it comes to life's inconveniences. Otherwise, there is a significant chunk of the populace that looks to some macho leader of one strain or another to set their agendas for them.

That just makes us entitled, not anti-authoritarian.

Also, Americans are extremely socially conformist.

We had some bite in us before the coming of Empire in the late 19th century but since then we're just dull-witted, unimaginative, reactionaries. If it hadn't been for blacks we'd still be doing the polka. Zzzzzzzzzzzz.

Interesting, thanks for the info. I hadn't thought of their relatively recent encounters with SARS 1 and how that would inform their response to SARS 2. One quibble - this line:
Singapore drew many lessons from the SARS-CoV outbreak of 2002, which, although associated with low morbidity and mortality, exposed the ill-preparedness of the country to deal with pandemics.
There was nothing "low mortality" about SARS 1.

SARS 1 CFR was 14-15% - which is like 10 times higher than SARS 2. Fortunately it didn't have nearly the asymptomatic carrier issue, so spread was rather significantly reduced. For comparison, SARS 2 CFR is like 1.7%, although this number will be constantly changing and varies greatly by age.
