Re: Covfefe-19 - Part 4- Stay the **** Home
I don’t think we have that data. Depends on the mask. Depends on the conditions. Depends on the fit. Depends on how much movement and the range of movement. Depends on a lot of things.
I’ve used them very effectively for fall cleanup, sweating profusely, lots of movement, for 12 hours. Allergies never kicked in and face was clean of dirt. This isn’t even really comparable to hospital use though. Viruses are usually much smaller and the masks still only stop 95% of particles. Front line people should be using N100s or PAPRs. They’re expensive and aren’t anywhere near widely distributed. Even then, N100s are only 99.x% effective and only if used correctly.
What’s all this mean? Nothing. Something is better than nothing. But it’s still only going to slow things down. They need to be changed properly and often to help prevent spread.
Edit: oh, and some masks have time limits but those are usually gas cartridges used to block things like acids and organics.
IIRC, even the N95 masks are only good for a couple hours? And that still may be an optimistic view?
