I've heard it's ten days. It's as if in the crisis we come out of the trance, and as soon as the pressure is off all the garbage our parents and pastors and puppeteers drilled into our heads puts us right back to sleep.
Rousseau thought the way out of the cycle was to burn everything to the ground. Rousseau was an as-shole who left each of his five newborns at an orphanage.

I'm more curious about the fractions of each class who offer to help. The most creative and outwardly helpful are the working class. I've seen more stories of the rich trying to buy private respirators and ask health care companies how they can better profit off COVID.
My wife and I do classes at a local arts/crafts/pottery place. Great people, fun classes. THey rescheduled our classes and have begun selling on Etsy during this downturn to try and make ends meet. I'm pretty sure we're going to just buy extra tickets instead of just having them rescheduled. Small businesses need help more than any other orgs right now. It's our duty to help them and especially those that we're close with. I'm also going to try and get our meats during this time from another local butcher shop, things like that. A little more expensive, but way better than watching them get screwed.
2020 could be the K-T boundary for small businesses unless we step in and help.

This is not actually true. The research indicates that middle income people are the most helpful. Low income people are helpful to people they identify as in their clan. However, they draw territorial lines and are violent if those are violated. High income people mostly just sit back.
The moral curve is a bell curve. The rich are isolated and don't feel much kinship with people; the poor are struggling and focused on surviving. The middle is where the heroes are.
Cut down the rich, raise up the poor, save the world.
All the classes have the same percentage of exceptional sociopaths who actively exploit the situation. The rich ones get the most press because they are able to do the most damage. But there are POS in every walk of life.

There is self-selection of sociopaths in certain fields (the famous case of that Swiss bank intentionally screening for sociopaths because they were "a good institutional fit," but those are tiny numbers. I can't see that sociopathy is particularly identified with any economic or demographic characteristic. There is one glaring exception: identified sociopaths are overwhelmingly male, however I assume this means we are still culturally hidebound in our definition of sociopathy and we're missing the women.

My great-grandfather used to do that. He grew up in a small coal mining town in southeastern Ohio, and I think it's what his family did when they finally got indoor plumbing, so it was what he knew.

Wait a second. Are you trying tell us sociopaths don't exist in every facet of society? Sociopathy is a psychological, and sometimes genetic, condition. Income does not play a part.
Serial killers tend to be sociopaths. Prime example of how they come from every facet of society.

I think they're all sociopaths. The exceptions are clouding the real picture. How long did it take pro-sports owners to pony up and pay out of work employees? It wasn't the owners who did it first, it was the players. The players aren't rich because of sociopathy, they're rich because they're athletic. That right there is the evidence that is so hard to actually test. To be a CEO you need to be able to fire hundreds, maybe thousands of people, just so you can meet your quarters and get paid. Can a normal person sleep after they've just put thousands of people into crisis? I couldn't. Could anyone on this board? Why are the bankers the first to ask, "How are you planning to profit off COVID-19?"

Interestingly they are just as likely to be able to intellectually empathize -- they understand perfectly well. In fact that allows them to manipulate others. It's all quite self-conscious.
Sociopaths are like chess players leading you into a trap. Theoretically we could all do this; what stops us is our neuro-physiology. We have pieces in our brains that have evolved to make us not want to hurt people, and this has been a tool for our species. Cooperation and caring are evolutionary strategies.

I had read an interesting article about a special school which deals with children who exhibit sociopathic tendencies. Some of these kids come from horrible backgrounds and or abuse. While others come from normal family settings. Which of course prompted the writer to ask the question, is it environmental or genetic?
The answer from the school was interesting -- we don't care. It doesn't matter to us. All our concern is to get these kids to be proper members, or at least non-dangerous members, of society.
The most fascinating part for me was how these kids were motivated and what type of carrots work for them. And how it can, most of the time, work to keep these kids "in line." The school does show data that their methods work in terms of future crimes based on the general sociopathic population.

We may have needed them once upon a time when humans were not the dominant threat to other humans to organize us and make the cold decisions, but since we swept everything else clear and now are the biggest problem to each other it's an obsolete model that should be discontinued.
