Covfefe-19 2020 part the second: Wash Your Hands

I work in a biomedical research lab and I’ve got to say the vibe is really weird now. Scientists who never close their office doors are, hardly anyone walking around the halls, lots of people starting to work from home.

On MDI? Mookie knows this place :)

“ Breaking News: An Australian official who met with Ivanka Trump and Attorney General William Barr in Washington last week tested positive for coronavirus.”

Re: Covfefe-19 2020 part the second: Wash Your Hands

So a question for the experts (les... ;) )

It's being said that 85% of people who get this virus will have little to no symptoms.

If you are one of them, what symptoms and what degree of those symptoms should you self quarantine? I can picture someone who gets warm in an afternoon, maybe coughs a few times- barely worse even to a cold kind of thing. For sure, given the current standard to get a limited test, there's no way that you are going to be tested- so the odds if you actually knowing is virtually nothing (unless, apparently, you are a star, since it appears the NBA is all going to get tested....).

What recommendation is being put out for the barely any symptom people who get this- and have no idea?

Thanks.

The reason I ask is that if we have 10 confirmed cases- which I'm wondering if they are in the 10% serious enough to test area- that would mean there are 90 others out there who have it, 85 of which will have no major issues, and X will have barely even any symptoms wandering around.

(which is why the current policy of social separation w/o many confirmed cases makes SO much sense)

I'm not les, and I'm not an expert, but if I had a fever and a cough I would definitely self-quarantine, or if I had direct contact with anyone that might have had it. Even if I had a mild case, I could pass it on to someone that could die from it.

That seems preposterous

That seems preposterous

the flu sickens 10-40 million people a year. That's with a vaccine.

We have no immunity to Covid-19. We could easily end up with > 100 million people infected. If somehow you managed to only have 1% fatality rate (even though our healthcare system would be overwhelmed) you would get 1 million deaths.

It's too late to lock this down like China seems to have done, unless we basically declare marshal law and quarantine everyone in their homes and use the national guard to deliver supplies to everyone.

You're describing my own situation right now. Have had cold symptoms for about a week. No fever at any time just stuffy nose, sore throat, breathing felt a little different, bit of a cough last night. Haven't coughed this morning but just laying here in bed. Supposed to go see dr this afternoon. But should I even do that? My thought is I don't wanna shrug it off when pneumonia is a possibility. My sister thinks it's flu b but considering I am laying here in no significant pain do they want me coming in? At the same time I want to stay ahead of it the best I can.

it's hard to miss:

Buddy of mookie’s brother worked in your lab one summer. We went up a couple weekends to visit.

Re: Covfefe-19 2020 part the second: Wash Your Hands

I would love to see the cross section between people on social media posting the “calming” statistics that only 5% of people infected go to the ICU, who also go ballistic if a 1 or 2% tax increase is discussed.

Re: Covfefe-19 2020 part the second: Wash Your Hands

It’s not preposterous if you’re paying attention. And that man was put in charge of all gov run healthcare by a president who cared about making sure people who knew what they were doing were in the right roles

And runny nose/congestion doesn’t seem to be a covid symptom.

Heard the head guy from the University of Minnesota on this this morning on Morning Joe. We're all going to have to learn to live with this virus. Bottom line. The virus is spread through the air so the over emphasis on hand washing is fine, but doesn't really help all that much.

His biggest concern is the new just in time manufacturing model that has been put in the last 10 years or so has made us worse off cause now we're not only relying on parts of the world that are unstable to supply us but we have no stock of anything on the shelves.

It's going to be a bumpy ride. He said this could go on for the next 6 months. Guys name was Michael Osterholm, PhD. He has some books out on pandemics, papers, etc. He knows what he's talking about.

Call your doctor and ask them. Or just get advice off Facebook. It seems that is good enough for Sniffles and Doctor Jared.

I wouldn't be that concerned without a fever.

Not concerned about it being covid per se but just trying to stay ahead of anything it might be or turn into. I know that's going to be a challenging task for medical professionals going forward since you're automatically going to assume the worst if you get sick.

We'll be fine. Doctor Sniffles says it will go away next month.
