Coronavirus

Re: Coronavirus

It isn't as simple as just the seniors. The juniors lost a year as well. So if you give all four classes a redshirt, that means that next year's incoming freshmen will have an "extra" class around for each year of their careers. Even if you have unlimited funds to pay scholarships, there are a finite number of spots in the lineup and minutes in the games.

In theory, it lasts longer than four years, because this scenario probably leads to a fair number of those incoming freshmen redshirting their first year on campus, given the already full roster. So it just rolls the problem over. It only gets resolved when programs recruit fewer players in successive years. That may mean backing out of previous verbal commitments, especially in sports that have not adopted the new recruiting rules, though I have no idea what sports have or have not done so.

Re: Coronavirus

That’s a bit harsh. There are plenty of talented, competitive athletes who are also serious students who would give anything to get a cancelled season back. Especially in women’s sports where college is almost always the end of the line.

I probably overstated my case, but not as much as you may think. There are also so lots of athletes of both genders (especially at the D-3 level, where I taught) who were serious athletes but not willing to compromise their academic progress. I knew a number of students who had an opportunity to get an extra year of eligibility but opted to just finish up and move on. I think there are a lot more of those types than people realize.

Not an apt analogy. The seniors are done and should be looking forward to commencement (which also might not happen unless the spread is contained). The juniors, sophs and frosh all have academic year(s) and eligibility remaining with credits to accumulate. Giving the seniors eligibility (which by the way happens from time to time; see Mark Benning, Mary Parker, Kevan Melrose, and Michael Lackey) can be an option provided they have grad courses lined up or need additional credits. Otherwise your school looks like a sports factory masquerading as an academic institution. Of course that never happens.

Re: Coronavirus

For scholarship players, the school has fulfilled its commitment to the student athlete to pay for the student to attend school this year. So I could see schools saying- ok you have another year of eligibility but we already gave you the money so if you want to use your eligibility next year it’s on your dime. That will severely limit the number of students who return. And it’s not unfair from that perspective except that it totally sucks for them as an athlete.

Re: Coronavirus

Is it really just a week ago we're getting ready to watch conference semi-finals and running possibilities of who plays who in the NCAAs??

At scholarship schools, there isn't something magical about senior seasons when it comes to granting redshirts. Harvard has rules all its own, that lead to injured student athletes withdrawing from school in order to retain a year of eligibility, and I'm not about to try to enter into that realm and make sense of it. For spring sports, the entire roster lost the year. It's not an analogy; it is simply what is.

I'm not advocating that anything specific should be done. But at the point we're at right now, there isn't anything that can be done that will be fair to everyone. It simply isn't possible, because there is one fewer season of competition and no reduction in student athletes.

Remember that Harvard, like all the Ivies does not issue athletic scholarships, so scholarship constraints are very different there.

Re: Coronavirus

The advisements are to keep gathering sizes under 250. All these games would have under 250 and they could have made them even smaller by not allowing any family to be there. Interstate travel is still allowed. Not playing these games makes no sense.

Once an NBA player tested positive, it was game over. Literally. For everybody.

Which means you really can't continue with classes, because you have thousands of students mingling in the same lecture rooms, hallways, unions, etc. Once the classes are canceled, what sort of message would it send to have practices and games continuing? I don't like it, but I fully support it.

FWIW, apparently the NCAA is discussing temporarily increasing scholarship limits in affected sports.

Re: Coronavirus

I would just like to point out that BC was the first team to put safety first and opt out of the tournament.

Their leadership in doing this is admirable. They will be looked upon, as the leader they are, to continue to put saftey first and opt out early on an annual basis going forward.

And don't forget, each year making opting out easier by contributing one or two top tier players to the NC$$ transfer portal.

There is another nasty virus spreading sucking the logic out of people's brains. Not directed at you but the powers that be at the time.

It's really a dead discussion now because even if they had played last weekend and got to a final 4 teams, there's no way as of today the FF was going to happen.
