Unfortunately a lot of mainsteam progressives don't see it. They are still of the opinion that better training is the solution. Or problems with racism in the system are the real culprits. Or maybe more diversity in the ranks is the answer. All are true of course but the real issue is the startlingly high percentage of white supremacists that have overtaken police forces in every corner of the country. Sadly white cops more and more are white supremacists.

Until you show me a proportionally similar number of unarmed white men are being killed by Asian or Hispanic or Black cops, you will never convince me that white supremacy among the ranks is not the real and most prominent cause of police brutality.

I don't want my doctor to tell me my physical woes are the result of stress, or genetics, or societal norms that make pizza and pop so much easier to consume than water, or fresh fruits and vegetables. My physical woes are because I am too heavy. 60 unneeded pounds put on in the last 6 years. Get rid of those 60 pounds and 85-90% of my physical issues go away. And like that, I want people to speak the truth about what is wrong with policing in America right now. Get rid of the white supremacists and all of the other issues disappear either entirely or almost so.
 
Your diagnosis that white supremacists have taken over police forces nationwide, while potentially accurate, has no solution. How are these white supremacists discovered, and forced out of their jobs wholesale?
Better training, more diversity, higher pay, fewer snowflakes afraid of the general public calling them out on their sh-t, etc., should all play roles in decreasing the disproportionate killing of people of color.
In other news, the Supreme Court, in a couple of unsigned opinions, sided with law enforcement on the question of keeping qualified immunity in place.

We pass laws circumscribing their behavior and put the ones who break those laws in jail.

As in the rest of life, authoritarians will self-select. It's the bearded Spock Enterprise: it is easier for a good man to fake being a bad man than a bad man to fake being a good one. They can't help themselves.

State laws or federal laws? How will they not conflict with qualified immunity, which every justice just upheld as of yesterday?

qualified immunity is a common law precedent at the federal level. All SCOTUS did was say it still limits liability in federal court. It can be overridden under state law in state courts or by congress at the federal level.

*edit* It's been brewing for a long time, BLM and COVID just helped heat the boiling pot a lot sooner. The State Attorney for Cook County has also been relaxing her prosecution which has upset the CPD and FOP. Add in the Laquan MacDonald (and similar) situations and this has all the makings of being ugly.

I wasn't around then, but I have a hunch if the city goes, it would make the 12th Street Riot of Detroit look like a street fair.

Sounds to me like the ones who should be relieved of their badges and guns are self-identifying.

I'm kinda hoping for the opposite... Police walk and Chicago realizes the play here and keeps things civil while the police are "shorthanded" and makes the CPD look like the clowns that many of them are...

Its truly a prime example of "good" officers being there, but being a minority who is forced to keep quiet to keep the Old Guard happy...
