Cops 9: You Are What Now?

Re: Cops 9: You Are What Now?

Here's a tone-deaf employer.

More than a dozen people staged a protest Sunday outside the Martin’s Super Market in Granger, in response to an employee being told by store management not to wear a face mask that said “Black Lives Matter.”

“I stand by what I did,” said Avery Worrell, who worked at the store off State Road 23. “The store told us we were free to express ourselves however we wanted to on our masks. So I figured I would take a stand where I could.”

In a Facebook post Friday, Worrell said he wore the mask for two shifts and was informed by the store’s manager “that there had been so many customer complaints filed against me for wearing it that the corporate office was instructing me not to wear it.”

The employer, the largest grocery chain in and around the South Bend area issued a statement that said, in part:
(T)he company stands “in support of racial equality” and that “respect is one of our core values, and as such, all of our associates have the responsibility to create a supportive and welcoming environment that values every individual

It is tiresome that after all that is happened we feel the need to welcome or value beliefs that are abhorrent. Martins Supermarket has locations all over the place, including areas of South Bend where a lot of people of color shop, or like the location in the story, Granger IN (a couple of miles to the northeast of South bend) that is home to a mostly white and often well-off population. As long as anyone feels the need to apologize for statements of inclusion and justice, like Black Lives Matter, black lives are not going to matter as much as white lives.

*eta* I contacted the corporate offices and let them know that although I no longer live in the communities served by their stores, I still visit frequently (before covid anyway) and almost always found myself in one of their locations picking up things for cookouts etc when seeing friends and family. If they did not correct this unfortunate stance, I don't plan on setting foot in one of their stores again and will encourage family and friends to seek other alternatives for their grocery needs.

I also know the employer is well within their rights under labor and employment laws to prohibit most any speech, but that still doesn't make it "right."

Earl Gray has been kicking the azz of prosecutors since Keith Ellison was in first grade.

That may be true but that defense is stupid and easily beatable. It is actually pretty desperate. Ellison will clap back with "soldiers dont follow immoral orders" and the double up with "The hitler defense didnt work at Nuremberg" and the whole thing craps the bed. And his "he tried to revive him after the fact" bs wont help as much as he hopes either.

The problem these guys have is we all saw what they did and how not concerned they really were. This guy is not some 22 year kid he is friggin pushing 40. And while he was a "rookie" I swear I heard he was a deputy for a while as well. But even if he wasnt...if you have any sort of moral code you at least half *** an attempt to do something. (saying roll him over isnt something either) Unless this trial doesnt start for like 2 years and they find just the perfect venue these guys are spending a lot of time in prison.

edit: the strategy critique is based on a conversation with my dad. He called it desperate for those reasons.

Abolish the cops. This is my county.

"Abolish the cops" and "Defund the Police" is just another day where Democrats suck at politics. Try "Reform the Police", "Fund the people/society/community, etc". Anything that doesn't sound like the Democratic idea is having zero cops and have to spend the whole time explaining what they actually mean.

Exactly. Its an attempt to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. While I understand why the Minny council is outraged, can someone explain how having no police is going to work? Because I can promise you the Republicans are going to explain it for you if a plausible explanation isn't immediately put forward.

They arent going to have no police in Minneapolis. That isnt even what they are saying. (and the voters in Minneapolis are for it so Republicans can say what they want)

Reform the cops isnt going to work this time. If the National Dems want to say that fine (of course they arent saying Abolish the Cops anyways) but in the actual communities that cant be the platform. We try and "reform the cops" every friggin decade and it never works. Minority voters arent going to go for the same old crap anymore.

Re: Cops 9: You Are What Now?

One of many articles being written about how to "abolish" the police.

The movement is a recognition that (1) not every public official / citizen interaction calls for law enforcement, (2) not every law enforcement interaction needs the threat of violence, (3) cops as currently constituted provoke more civil disorder than they solve, and (4) they're racist AF.

Since the reform of the military and the FBI, the cops, CBP, and sports coaching are the last citadels of state subsidization of no-necked dumbf-cks. These are the people who cannot survive in a modern economy or society. They lack the cognitive tools and moral capacity. Maybe they can make it in some dark corner of the business world but we have to scour them out of state employment. They just cause too much damage.

Re: Cops 9: You Are What Now?

You know what is funny...everyone rips on the youth and the Far Left because they are unreliable at the voting booth. This stuff is exactly why. They have a movement going, one with broad appeal across demographics nationwide right now. (in this case polling shows only Trumpers are against them) Prototypical Dems join the fight and support it. Then, at the first sign that not everyone agrees they end up backtracking taking the teeth out of the argument and making themselves and the movement look weak. They devalue everything the youth and Far Left believe in then expect them to be like Charlie Brown going back to kick the football again...

This should be a local argument not a national one. Trump and his cronies can say what they want...their crowd isnt who is needed to win.

Maybe it is time for Democrats to stop acting like Democrats. There have been two weeks of protests all around the ****ing world because of what is going on. For the first time ever there is actual real support for major changes in how we police ourselves. Hows about we wait and see before we devalue the decision and corrupt it to the point of ineffectualism mmkay? The normal Democratic half measures (reform and retrain) will always be available later on...for now lets use the momentum and see where it takes us. We are winning, lets ****ing act like it for once.

A good article and all reasonable proposals. The problem as you may acknowledge is that perception is 9/10ths reality. If the catch phrase is "abolish the police" the casual voter is not going to dig through the nuances of that. The Republicans however will fill in the blanks. While that might not matter in Minneapolis as Handy suggests, it might in other places that we need to win in order to mercifully send Chump and his merry band of Nazi's packing once and for all.

But that is why the decision should always be local not national. Trump is the only one forcing the issue on Biden despite what CNN believes. Biden doesnt have to own this all he has to say is "The People of 'X' need to decide for themselves what they want in their policing and we support their right to do so". Make Trump look like a dictator. Biden and his campaign dont need to be involved at all. (nor should they be) Biden and the DNC at the top need to stress this is a community decision only.

Now...if somehow "Abolish the Police" ends up on the national platform then I will agree with you wholeheartedly.

Re: Cops 9: You Are What Now?

The Democratic party, which I will vote for STRAIGHT TICKET this year and likely every remaining year of my life, is in part a mechanism for preserving the status quo and ensuring no real change ever happens. Many Democratic voices will sell you on the "if we stop murdering blacks that will make middle class whites nervous" line.

People who benefit from the status quo will "compromise" by trading the lives of those who are harmed by it, for the opportunity of spending years in power doing nothing for fear that actual change might endanger their rentier status.

Comfortable whites always have REASONS for not listening to poor minorities. It is the job of the rest of Democrats to take the party away from them and use it as a tool for radical change. Either they have nowhere to go or they will migrate to the GOP and moderate it.

Win/win.

You would think the party that got hammered by the term "death panels" would learn their lessons, but it isn't like the democratic party has been particularly good at politics for the last 30 years. The good news is they weren't much better in 2018 and managed to do quite well. They have 4 or 5 months to show the suburbanites what is meant and what they are trying to do. Plenty of time to either screw it up or craft an understandable message.

Re: Cops 9: You Are What Now?

Yeah, but nobody knows what we're winning at. They had a bigshot from Mpls on NPR this morning, asked him "What comes next when the police are defunded?" He said, "Nobody knows yet." Which is honest, but a terrible political campaign. "We're pretty sure we're winning at something! Let's keep it up and see if we can figure out what's happening!"
Oddly, the most clear-eyed view of this has been from Kepler. If you're tearing down an institution like the police state, you should have at least some broad outline of what will take its place. Then run on that.
"Public safety for everyone" works a heck of a lot better than "Defund the police." There's still a couple of months to put that together with a little more care than what we've seen so far.

I don't know if there's any such thing as a local issue in the age of Reddit. We had a bunch of yoopers carrying signs across the bridge in Houghton last week, albeit looking a little sleepy and chatting with Sheriff's deputies ("weren't you in my Stacey's class?") along the way. The only whiff of controversy I've ever heard of the cops up here involved issues of access and investigation on the reservation. But because of the internet/cable news, there they all were: DEFUND THE POLICE.
