MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A majority of the members of the Minneapolis City Council said Sunday they support disbanding the city’s police department, an aggressive stance that comes just as the state has launched a civil rights investigation after George Floyd’s death.

Nine of the council’s 12 members appeared with activists at a rally in a city park Sunday afternoon and vowed to end policing as the city currently knows it. Council member Jeremiah Ellison promised that the council would “dismantle” the department.

“It is clear that our system of policing is not keeping our communities safe,” Lisa Bender, the council president, said. “Our efforts at incremental reform have failed, period.”

Bender went on to say she and the eight other council members that joined the rally are committed to ending the city’s relationship with the police force and “to end policing as we know it and recreate systems that actually keep us safe.”

GF brought up a good point the other day. She is hardly a Cop Defender but she does buy how the stress is part of what causes this lack of empathy. She brought up the idea of regular (I said monthly but she said maybe quarterly) mental health checks especially early on. Make them mandatory. (make it a paid day off if you have to) Have them meet with professionals so they can decompress.

Absolutely. Monitor for ptsd, hire psychologists for mental health evaluations at least annually, rotate street cops to desk duties on a regular rotation to recalibrate.

I think this city council is a bit loony (they make fray appear as a centrist) but the MPD can go to hell.

Look at all these small dicked scum all over America hitting innocent protestors.

Someone earlier brought up the cops are getting off on the violence, shooting rubber bullets into people’s faces, knocking out teeth and destroying eyes, etc., tear gassing peaceful protesters etc.

Absolutely right. That’s the mentality of a hell of a LOT of people who apply to be cops. The ignorant, hateful, racist bullies who appear amped up to explode at any moment.

However we move forward, these types of people must be identified early and never allowed into pd’s, or the military.

We really need to open up space as a horrific frontier with long, long odds of getting rich, like Gateway. Historically, that is where these as-sholes have gone. The pioneers who "tamed the West" were ultra-violent sh-tbirds driven out of every decent town east of St. Louis. The sailors in the Age of Discovery were rapists and looters bodily thrown on to ships and treated as prisoners by the officers on the voyages. 95% of them died (win) and the 5% remainder found stuff which the sensible humans back home then immediately stole from them (win).

Send these f-cks to the stars. No OSHA required.

It's wearing on me, also. Kroll/Frey are horrible, they need to be gone. I got a nice break this afternoon, hanging with friends on a patio, obeying the rules, but man, I come home and it seems tenfold.

idiotic. Jimmy Carter and donald trump were/are both simply awful presidents. Are they both just zeroes? Richard Nixon and donald trump were/are both crooked presidents. Were they both equally bad? The mayor might be a bad chief executive for his city. There might be things he has handled poorly. But he is not a racist piece of human stool like trump. If Frey were on fire, I'd at least pee on him. The only way I'd ever pee on trump was if he wasn't on fire. Of course now that I think about it, apparently he's into that... Besides, at least Frey doesn't want to disband your hero cop shop, he just wants to root out the bad apples.
