Salaries that attract the right people, more extensive training/background checks, better qualified trainers to guide new recruits, etc etc etc.

Question regarding Cops and "Education vs Experience":

It seems that "new" cops come from two pools: College Degree (up to a Masters) and former military. Are the military hires using a GI bill to get the same degrees as the others, or are they being hired based solely on their military experience and little advanced education? And what percentage are the former military?

Abolish the police. Find another way.

First respondents in non-dispute situations should be an entirely non-law enforcement entity; some sort of local social assistance agency with no LEO capacity or connection so they will be trusted and welcomed by the community they serve (typically drawn right from that community for self-regulation). Essentially, a domestic Peace Corps.

First respondents in disputes, while LEO in some capacity, should be completely unarmed, with the capacity to call for armed backup if urgently needed.

Armed backup might look something like current police except they would be (1) demilitarized, and (2) less than 1/100th, if not 1/1000th, of current police numbers.

Finally, any use of force will have to be reviewed afterwards by community leaders, with the capacity to discipline non-compliant violent LEO, including civil suits. The power of violence vests with the community, not with LEO. LEO is only a tool, it has no sovereignty. It is hired help.

This crap is happening everywhere. so is every cop in every department in every city in every state not trained well enough?

If criminals acted this way would we be begging to train them to act better? **** NO! We would want them locked up.

where is the "Protect" in "Protect and Serve"? The only thing the majority of cops protect is themselves. This is not a few bad apples anymore...

And still, not one of the many "awesome" cops you say are on the police force will step up and stop the bad apples from being bad apples. Not one.

Did these "awesome" cops get different training than the bad apples? When an entire line of cops rushes a crowd of innocent protestors with their batons and shields out, pushing and beating on them, which ones are the "awesome" cops?

Many urban communities have "underground associations" that people will call instead of calling the police because they dont trust the cops to do the job and help them.

Oh, like that Philly cop who bashed the kids head in with his baton, needing something like 10 staples to close, makes about $115,000/year, probably a lot more than that if you count all his detail work.

Those kind of low-paying police salaries?

If you paid any sort of attention, and you probably didn't, he wouldn't have made it through the extensive training/mental eval.

During the protests there were dozens of Minnesota blacks who said "if I have a burglary I'll never call the police, because who knows what will happen?" The burglar will take your stuff, Johnny Law might murder you and then sue your family for emotional trauma.

The expected value function for calling the cops if you're black is negative.

They don't have training/mental evals now? Oh, those ones suck, if we had different ones, things will be better.

And he was a leader in the department. How'd he keep getting promoted?

It's almost like they want that sort of person. Haven't seen a whole lot of "awesome" cops in all these videos being posted. Where they all hiding?

You all realize that there isn't going to be a lawless void where criminals run free, right?

The municipality will likely have to set a transition time frame and then pay for police coverage from the county sheriff department or the state police. Also, the local union will be putting up a big fight as well.

Of all the myths about police officers, the one about them being underpaid is perhaps the biggest canard. I don't believe Derek Chauvin had an advanced rank, but maybe he did. Without it, his earnings as a Police Officer at the top end of his paygrade, and with his longevity pay figured in, was at least $87,000 per year. That doesn't include the additional money her earned as a Field Training Officer or any overtime he earned. I have never known any cops to not earn dozens or even hundreds of hours of overtime every month, so if he earned less than $100,000 a year, I'll start root for Michigan next time we play them in hockey.

How much more do we need to pay them to attract people who know you don't put your knee on an unarmed man's neck for 9 minutes? Chauvin base wage was almost double the median income in the Twin Cities in 2019. So do we need to pay them $150,000? $200,000? $1,000,000? And on top of it, police officers today have a combination of fringe benefits that are almost unheard of in any other occupation in the country. In Minnesota a police officer receives 3% of his or her annual salary for every year of service based on their highest 60 consecutive months of pay. That means after 25 years on the job, a cop will earn a pension equal to 75% of his or her highest salary forever. I believe you can continue to build credits under Minnesota's retirement system can max out at basically 100% if they serve 33 or more years. Those retirement benefits are better than 95% of all working people in this country.

It is a fvcking lie that police are underpaid.
