Cops 3: Shoot low boys -- they're ridin' Shetland ponies!

Re: Cops 3: Shoot low boys -- they're ridin' Shetland ponies!

I think I'm seeing a pattern here, and the rough outline of a solution. Solve poverty, solve the gang problem, and you're well on your way to solving the gun violence problem.

I swear I heard something recently that said "gun violence" is down 50% from 20 years ago. Caught it on a radio surf while driving so no details.

Re: Cops 3: Shoot low boys -- they're ridin' Shetland ponies!

"Distracted driving" should be the offense.

This. This this this.

If you get in an accident and your computer or phone or even your hands free* was transmitting, that should kick up the penalty. If you injure someone it should move you from an accident to reckless endangerment.

* There's a great study (great because it supported a contention I have) which purports to show that about 80% of the distraction of a phone conversation comes from actually participating in the conversation, not manipulating the device. When we are listening and responding our brains are divided from the task of driving. You can test this theory by driving somewhere in a hurry and having your spouse converse with you. It's nearly impossible and you typically end up either telling them to "shut up" or, less dangerously, wrapping the car around a lamppost.

Overall violent crime has been dropping pretty consistently since the early 90s. There are twelve million doctoral dissertations on why, all saying mutually contradictory things.

And an update on Chicago shooting statistics. (via http://hey*******.com)
(If that censors, it's HeyJack*ss.com)

June to Date
Shot & Killed: 15
Shot & Wounded: 76
Total Shot: 91
Total Homicides: 17

Year to Date
Shot & Killed: 246
Shot & Wounded: 1374
Total Shot: 1620
Total Homicides: 277

A person in Chicago is shot every two hours and 22 minutes. A person is murdered every 13 hours and 52 minutes.

Re: Cops 3: Shoot low boys -- they're ridin' Shetland ponies!

Oddly, it's more fatal to be on a highway in Illinois than it is to be a pedestrian in the south or west neighborhoods of Chicago.

The Illinois Department of Transportation reports that there have been 403 fatal crashes on Illinois highways, resulting in 430 deaths in 2016 to date.

I must say. That is pretty impressive voter suppression...

So motor vehicles have killed more in Illinois than guns so far in 2016? Wouldn't have guessed that based on media reporting.

We need to go after GM, Ford, Honda, etc for producing these dangerous weapons...

Not quite apples to apples. Gun numbers are for the City of Chicago. IDOT numbers are state wide.

To be fair, it's probably a 50/50 chance of being shot or killed by motor vehicle state wide.

I'm also not sure if the IDOT crash statistics include the fatal shootings that took place on their expressways within the city limits.

*Edit* Agreed that there is an obvious tilt to the gun violence, and "eh, accidents happen" to the car crashes.

If guns and gun ownership were regulated the same as automobiles, I'd be fine with that.

I don't recall going through a background check to buy the last Jaguar ... I do for the last Springfield ... so you're advocating FBI background checks for auto purchases. Check. What about the "used car lot loophole"? :D

Baltimore police 2.5. Baltimore DA 0.5

@WTOP: Officer Caesar Goodson Found not guilty of all charges in the death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray

Re: Cops 3: Shoot low boys -- they're ridin' Shetland ponies!

Baltimore Circuit Judge Barry Williams delivered his verdict Thursday after hearing five days of testimony in the non-jury trial. He found Goodson not guilty of “depraved-heart” murder, manslaughter, assault, misconduct in office, and reckless endangerment.

There was never a chance he would be guilty of Murder 1. Based on what the public has been told, IMO, at least a couple of the other charges should have stuck.

Non-jury trial, eh? Sounds like a bit of internal cooking. However, you do have a point: With six people involved, there will never be a murder 1 conviction. This is why they have two or more magic badges lay in 150 rounds. You can't prove the "kill shot", so they get away scot free. This is why now you're seeing charges of attempted murder.
