Concussions

Re: Concussions

Does anyone know if there is a preponderance of concussions in either the D1 level (where the players trend to be bigger) or D3 level? Or are the occurrences generally about the same?

Re: Concussions

after being involved in boy and girls hockey for twenty years as a executive and coach in boys and girls
minor leagues

the one thing that stands out is mouthguards do not prevent concussions they keep the teeth in and prevent bitting

in girls hockey I would chosse a neck guard over a mouth gaurd

even the best helmets do not prevent concusions because of the brain movement inside the skull

the answer is better enforcement with hits to the heads

in canada every hit the head was a automatice penalty of 2 mins or 4 mins or game

this seems to have slowed down some lately

start calling these regularly and the risk will be be reduced but not stopped

these companies that are going to orginizations selling base lines before concusions of your child for 60 to 80 dollars a year

are not being read by nero surgens but by regular doctors and in some cases not even a doctor

I do not recommend them

the reason is I have access to nero surgons through my wife and you are not allowed to take the base lines to your own doctor

to date I do not have any faith in these corporations and my daugther did not take part

Re: Concussions

To expand a bit, of the 32 hockey helmets on the market, only one tested as a 3-star helmet. Nine, which are worn by about 25% of all players, got zero stars. Note that this system is out of five stars; no hockey helmets got 4 or 5 stars.

What astonished me was that in the testing protocols used by the governing bodies, the helmet's ability to deal with rotational acceleration wasn't even a factor. While that may be a difficult thing for a helmet to deal with, just ignoring it altogether seems way off given the nature of hockey collisions.

One idea I've seen brought up in the context of football that may also be applicable to hockey is to have padding on the outside of the helmet and not just the inside. The idea is that you reduce the acceleration of the whole head/helmet structure rather than just trying to reduce the acceleration of the head within the helmet.

There was a goalie at the U of M that had to stop playing because of a concussion(s). Grogan? Skaters are not the only players effected. How many is too many for a goaltender?

Yes, Grogan.

I know of an extremely well known elite goaltender that everyone on this site is familiar with and most of whom have seen play for years who as of several years ago had already, apparently, suffered six of them. When I heard that I couldn't help but think "what is she doing still playing?"

Years later I think that she is still playing...I know that she was as of 2 years ago.
