Concussions

Re: Concussions

This article about the different responses of the NHL and NFL to CTE–related lawsuits includes this interesting fact:

“For now, the N.H.L. [in its stonewalling] may have calculated correctly. The league has not seen a dramatic decline in attendance or television ratings, though its national television audiences have long been the lowest of the four largest North American professional leagues. Participation has steadily grown, a sign that parents are not so worried about the safety of ice hockey that they are steering their children into other sports." [italics added]

I have a son who has had 4 documented concussions. 2 in HS and 2 in college. So far, no long term consequences, and I pray it stays that way

Re: Concussions

Fascinating read on what concussions have done to a player some of you may remember from his playing days at Michigan State as well in the NHL.

Wrong to blame this on concussions. For every reach to blame things on concussions and cte there are many more stories of normal lives. Its conslusion jumping, click bait etc. Still in such and early stage of understanding concussions as to how why which when and the effects.

Re: Concussions

The handwriting was on the wall as soon as the judge refused to certify the suit as a class action. That left the players with no leverage.

Re: Concussions

They will get 22k

Yes, plus medical expenses which will vary from player to player but in the aggregate taking the cash plus medical expenses up to $60K average per player. But since medical expenses will vary from player to player, consequently the total financial benefit per player will also vary which is what I was alluding to by saying that it wasn't as simple as just averaging the total payout by the number of claimants.

Interesting to see how much the "market" values the health and well being of its participants without whom it wouldn't exist.

Although to be totally objective one would have to try to factor into the equation the extra financial benefit that each player received from playing as opposed to having done something else with their lives. After all, no one forces these guys to play the game. It's voluntary.

this is especially true in the case of the goons, they didn't have the talent to play pro except with their fists, some of these guys now expect to have everybody's sympathy, sorry, you selected your future, many of them became drug addicts and head cases, probably with the realization that their life was a fraud, although they were members of a team and wore the uniform, they weren't hockey players

Did it take a lot of effort to become a sociopath, or did it just come naturally?

Peckerchecker was born that way, and he's learned how to become worse and worse each year of his sad little lonely life. Not sure why he bothers following our sport. Clearly he doesn't have any female loved ones, let alone any that play sports of any kind. Everyone here basically ignores him as much as possible. Responding to his ridiculous posts only adds fuel to the fire of his insanity.
