Re: Completely Unwoven: Business, Economics, and Tax Policy 4.0

I feel middle class (or what I think middle class should be, comfortable with some disposable income), but according to this my family of three makes too much. Am I upper middle class? I don't think I would have considered myself that.

Upper middle class is probably 1.25 - 1.5x those numbers, and lower middle class .75x - .875x. So if your household income is > 1.5x their number for F3, congrats, you're rich.

One set of numbers says very little. A great salary in Butte won't buy a studio apartment in Brooklyn.

According to those numbers I'm upper class; I guess I should turn Republican and f-ck the rest of you over.

That's why the range is so large. The low end is the middle of Mississippi while the high end would be for just outside the San Francisco area. Also, being just above those figures doesn't make someone well-off, just a higher than normal income. Don't be so defensive about earning a good wage. :p

Neglect not, the b*tching about illegals and welfare queens in the comments.

I didn't even think to read the comments. It's the internet, so I'm sure they're all spot on and hold great insight.

Being single is also a huge factor. $90k goes a lot farther when flying solo, than it does with a family of 7. I still can't figure how my Ft. Wayne cousin, her husband, and their 5 kids, get by on his music teacher's salary (which I presume is about $45-50k at his seniority/locale in IN).

EDIT: Well, OK. They don't ski or vacation in Aspen, for one. :p

The tired old political joke is "how do Democrats define 'rich'"?

-- anyone who makes more than me.

Re: Completely Unwoven: Business, Economics, and Tax Policy 4.0

what did j. forbes kerry define as "super rich" in 2004? 75k?

$75K was when they wanted to rollback any tax credits for single people, and then, as dx said, at $200K you were lumped in with the rich people.

Maybe we should just go back to barter...

According to an OCCRP report, the "Laundromat" scams were always the same. Two shell companies existing only on paper would pretend to lend money to each other. One company would then “default” on the loan. Judges would certify the “debt” as authentic, allowing the Russian businesses to send cash to an account in Moldova. This money was sent to accounts controlled by the court - all at one bank - Moldindconbank in Moldova.

With the money finally out of Russia some of it was withdrawn directly. The majority of it though was sent to another bank - Trasta Komercbanka in Latvia, which is inside the European Union. From there it was easy to send it anywhere else in the world through the anonymous shell companies.

Murphy from Transparency International is not surprised by this complex scheme. "For too long we've thought of corruption as being something that happens in Russia or China or in African countries. But here we can see just how complicit the whole of the financial system is."

A 5% drop is not doom and gloom. It doesn't even reach the threshold for being a market correction.

But it's a big number, and humans suck at putting big numbers into perspective. Same reason many people freak out over the budget deficit, even though it's relatively small in the grand scheme of things relative to the country's GDP and net worth.

Maybe the country just needs to issue 2.0 greenbacks to knock a few zeroes off of figures. We could bring back the half penny, too, increasing mining jobs in the process.

The national debt is over 100% of the GDP. ;)

But do you remember when Cuban said the market would crash if Trump was elected?

Nope, I don't follow Mark Cuban news. Who is he to me other than a rich man on TV who likes to talk?

The point is that predicting all this movement being based upon lack of a government action is just dumb. It's just trying to scare people into supporting crappy legislation. It's the true definition of terrorism.
