College Hockey: By the Decade

Re: College Hockey: By the Decade

College Hockey Weekly has announced their newest historical look at college hockey with their "College Hockey: By the Decade." CHW plans to unveil All-Decade Teams, Coach of the Decade, Teams and Programs of the Decade, and Games of the Decade. They have already released their 2000s All-Decade Team...

I thought I would start this thread for discussion on how the decades unfold. Also, I believe CHW plans on doing each decade back to at least the 1930s. Anyway, enjoy!

Yann Effin' Danis. Man he was awesome.

Yann Effin' Danis. Man he was awesome.

Agreed. While he had better years in 2001-2002 and 2003-2004, it was the 2003 ECAC Series with Yale that I remember Danis just standing on his head. Yale came after Brown with just chance after chance and Danis just stonewalled them. It was one of the top 5-10 goaltending performances that I have ever seen.

Re: College Hockey: By the Decade

Ah, I see it's actually "Men's D-I college hockey: By the Decade". Shame, that.

Re: College Hockey: By the Decade

Guess this list would show how often the "best" team doesn't win (only 4 Champs in the top 10). Two gopher championship teams don't even make the top 20 for the decade.

The '02 squad was #19, but yes, it goes to show that at least recently, the best squad does not always capture the hardware. In the top 25 teams of all-time list, I went year by year and listed who the "best" team was and where the national champion finished in that particular year.

Re: College Hockey: By the Decade

College Hockey Weekly has put up the Coach of the Decade for the 2000s...

Also, they have put up the Best Programs of the Decade for the 2000s...

Wow, I think it was pretty obvious York would be Coach of the Decade for 2000s, but when you lay out all the numbers it's a no brainier. Pretty impressive.

Very cool idea, can't wait to see more!

Re: College Hockey: By the Decade

That should have been assumed given the thread is in the Men's Division 1 Forum.

Well there is no "generic college hockey" forum, and this is the most popular of the three specific fora, so that's not necessarily a given. =)

The 2000's Games of the Decade have been published...

Look for more updates in the coming weeks. I believe the 1990's All-Decade team is scheduled to come out next.

the 2003-2004 season was pretty darn amazing for DU's Pioneers. The 5-3 comeback victory over UMD in the semis could easily have made the list. Although we would like to forget the "House of Horrors" game in Mankato. it is unforgettable

Re: College Hockey: By the Decade

Looks more like the Game of the Year for each year.

Agreed. Initially they had us rank our top 10 games from the decade, but there was too much contention between the editors (I'm not sure how the actual vote came out) as to what game should have been the "game of the decade." They went back and forth about how it should be done for quite awhile. Ultimately, they decided to go year-by-year. FWIW, Here was my top 10...

1. 2004 West Regional Final: Denver 1 - 0 North Dakota
2. 2009 NCAA Championship: BU 4 (OT) - 3 Miami
3. 2002 NCAA Championship: Minnesota 4 (OT) - 3 Maine
4. 2004 WCHA Final Five Championship: Minnesota 5 - 4 North Dakota
5. 2007 WCHA Final Five Championship: Minnesota 3 (OT) - 2 North Dakota
6. 2007 West Regional Final: North Dakota 3 (OT) - 2 Minnesota
7. 2006 Midwest Regional Final: Wisconsin 1 (3OT) - 0 Cornell
8. 2006 WCHA Final Five Semifinal: SCSU 8 (OT) - 7 Minnesota
9. 2004 NCAA Championship: DU 1 - 0 Maine
10. 2008 WCHA First Round Series: Minnesota over Mankato 2 games to 1

Obviously, I only included games that I actually watched (either live or on TV), as I didn't think it was fair to include games that I just heard about or only saw key highlights.

College Hockey Weekly has put out their All-Decade Team from the 1990s...

Homer Alert!! Homer Alert!! Homer Alert!! Homer Alert!!

The criteria of the list being "the best college hockey players from this past decade" is pretty nebulous, at best. I see they concentrated on players who played four years, but my team of "the best college hockey players from this past decade" would start with Paul Kariya. In a season and a half (51 games - which is only a few more than a single season for some players), he tallied 124 points. That is 2.43 pts/game. For perspective, his teammate Jim Montgomery (the high scorer on CHN's list) was 301/170 for 1.77 pts/game. If the list is merely high scorers, Paul isn't on it. But on my list of "best players" he's on it for sure.

It's a legit argument. Kariya was on my ballot that I had for the All-Decade team. Ultimately, I think Kariya didn't make it for three reasons. First, he only played 51 games in the decade. Second, he quit on his team midway through his sophomore season (also the Maine-NCAA fiasco didn't help). Finally, there were a lot of very good forwards in the 1990s, and everyone on the list was deserving of their spot (IMO). Playing at an extremely high level for 4 years is probably more sought after by colleges than playing great for 1 year.

Yup. His numbers would have been even better if Brown had any sort of defense during his time. The team had some good offensive players, but the defense was laughable. Yann kept us in almost every game.
