College Hockey and TV...

Re: College Hockey and TV...

"The National" how pretentious. are they referring to the band or the CBC show?

Re: College Hockey and TV...

Televised college hockey is a mixed blessing. Along with the much-needed revenue stream from TV comes shoot-outs. Stay tuned for more trade-offs.

They already do it in the CCHA, and that was before all this recent national popularity. It seems to me like that was the test league, so it'll probably depend on their feelings about it, rather than TV.

Yes, shoot outs are the very much obvious progression for all leagues thanks to TV coverage....
Or is it that we will pay more for the atheletes.

Revenue stream? Just how much money do you think is flowing towards college hockey in any of the TV deals, current or future? It's already been reported that the NCHC is paying all the costs for their TV package with CBS Sports Network. Notre Dame is not looking at their forthcoming coverage on the NBC Sports Network as any sort of a revenue generating vehicle, instead using it for exposure (which I suppose could be extrapolated into some future revenue growth) and even the top couple of teams as far as continued exposure go don't make money on their broadcasts like you must be thinking. If we end up with more shootouts it's because more league commissioners and college presidents think the flavor of the month is the way to go.

Bear Red thinks we'll be going to Cup Games (the equivalent of football's Bowl Games).

Re: College Hockey and TV...

So major media networks are buying up rights to college hockey broadcasts and producing and broadcasting games for exposure, not for profit? If so we finally have proof positive of the nonsensical and horribly prejudiced nature of mainstream media. Or is it the spendthrift college hockey programs [see NCHC above] that are giving all their spare cash to TV networks in order to increase media profits, increase ticket sales, compete with major junior programs, or for some other incomprehensible reason?

major media networks? These are the bastard children of the major media networks (NBC Sports, CBS Sports, ESPNU), that not everyone, unless they really want to, get in their cable packages. I personally have all of the channels, because I pay extra and want them, but let's be real, we're not seeing games on ESPN/ESPN2, NBC and CBS regular networks.

Anastos worked with the NHL Brass in an effort to test out some quirky rule changes in game action. The shootouts were, I feel, Anastos' way of becoming more NHL-esque and marketable. Coaches around the CCHA hated the shootout, but it was thrust upon them.

The CCHA did a few smart things I keep wishing the NHL would do regarding the shootouts. The three point system and marked the game as a tie, but noted shootout wins.

I have a feeling the B1G conference will keep some of the CCHA's ways before the NCHC does.

Re: College Hockey and TV...

Somebody pinch me. Are we really getting all this run?

I hope it lasts beyond this year.

Seriously, who thought all of this college hockey coverage was possible even last year at this time.

11:18 on a Friday and I'm still watching a live game and it's not Denver?

CC vs UNO

As a fan of The University of Michigan who is in the CCHA I see shoot-outs as an unfortunate necessary evil. I really dislike a shoot-out determining who wins a game. But simply for TV and the casual fan, you need them. As much as I dislike Anastos I think that the 3-point system is not only a much fairer way to go about things, it makes for the league to be much more competitive. Since we are trying to expand the popularity of college hockey, and that requires TV deals, a winner needs to be decided each game. For non-purists, a tie in Hockey is almost equitable to that of a tie in soccer (who cares). Therefore a shoot-out is required.

I do however have a suggestion, unless the Pairwise can be improved by taking into account shoot-out wins, the NCAA should continue to not acknowledge shoot-out wins. I do think that shoot-outs are a good thing when it comes to an individual league game. The 3-point game is much better than the way the NHL does it IMO. However, if a shoot-out ever determines a champion or who advances in a tournament I'll hang myself.

So to re-cap, during league games only there should be a shoot-out. The NCAA should continue to ignore the shoot-out, but leagues should have them to A.) Make the sport more appealing for the casual fan, and B.) Make their given league more competitive. But no shoot-out in the tourny...

Sound good?

Who thought . . . ? Serious people who noticed the profusion of T.V. channels, the success of T.V. programming directed to specific audiences, the financial demographics of college sports fans, and people who understand the insatiable appetite of T.V. for new programming - they thought so. Troglodite reactionaries, not so much.

The Twin Cities area got 6 games last night, 4 games tonight. I don't care if it's bastige channels or not. It's on TV. I likey.

Edit: that amount of games on one night HAS happened in the past, but it was rare. It's more common this year.
