College Football V: Bowls Are Done; Carry On My Wayward Sons

Re: College Football V: Bowls Are Done; Carry On My Wayward Sons

USC fans will be even more apoplectic.

Let's be honest, they have every right to be upset. What they did now isn't even in the same solar system as what tOSU has been caught doing and they got hit harder.

Re: College Football V: Bowls Are Done; Carry On My Wayward Sons

So true..life's a ***** though.

While I often subscribe to that theory, I don't think it is the right attitude to have right now. (and it certainly isnt the attitude the NCAA should have) Especially for someone who loves the Sioux so much...does "Lifes a *****" apply to the beloved name as well?

Very good point. I one hundred percent agree there's reason to be upset out West. But do we expect anything more of the NCAA? They're all about changing the way they handle things in different situations. There's definitely no sense of "stare decisis" that anyone can see from the NCAA. The inconsistentcy they show tends to make me lose even more respect for an association that should be one of the most respectable in the States. **** the NCAA, they're the ones making life a ***** for some member schools.

Re: College Football V: Bowls Are Done; Carry On My Wayward Sons

It has always been that way though. Why did SMU get the death penalty when every school in the South West Conference was doing the exact same thing and had been doing it for longer? Why did UNLV get ripped to shreds when plenty of teams were committing the same violations?

The NCAA is like NHL Hockey, they punish how they choose, who they choose and when they choose. Since no colleges will leave the NCAA they can act with total impunity.

If only some schools had the balls to stick up to the NCAA and leave..:p

They could but its go where?? The NAIA gets nothing in the way of coverage from ESPN. The lower divisions of the NCAA get their championship for most of their sports on ESPN simply because the NCAA can package them together with ESPN in a take it or leave it deal for them. The CIS isn't much better either, and they would have a hairy fit about letting a USA school into their ranks.

From what I can tell- the difference is rumors vs. facts. We all know (knew) that teams like A&M and UT paid off their players, just like SMU did. But disguntled players at SMU told on them. That, and they did it more than once, with proof both times. The death penalty came from the proof going as deep as it did.

but after watching that SMU special on ESPN, I doubt that anyone else will get the death penalty unless it's REALLY bad.

As for USC vs. tOSU... while it may seem like the hand of NCAA is really loud in LA, I don't see the last of the hand being shown in Columbus. It got deeper very quickly, and I think the NCAA is taking their time to make sure the ducks are in a row. Based on their collective silence, I doubt that tOSU's current sanctions on themselves will satisfy the NCAA.

(similar can be said about what is going on in Boise- some of the local papers who were pro BSU are starting to pile on, since the only way they could get the documents was a difficult struggle via the freedom of information act. This from a public university.... to me, silence from the ncaa is very bad for a particular program)

That's just it. It would take a collection of big schools who make the NCAA lots of money to do it, and there's no chance that ever happens. EVER.

If/when the power six conferences realize they can make boatloads of money, cut their own deals with ESPN et al, and do it all without worrying about the NCAA cracking down on them at whim then they will depart the NCAA and set up their own shop. They can either have no rules (what you see in ESPN 30 for 30 becomes legal) or they set up an infractions committee that gives schools a relative slap on the wrist every once in a while (and what you see on ESPN stays illegal, but no one cares). The power conferences can also take this scenario to the NCAA and tell them to back off or else. That way they keep the legitimacy of the NCAA (such as it is) but turn them into a toothless watchdog.

ESPN OTL: Wrestling with the Truth at UNO

This aired Sunday, about how Nebraska-Omaha announced that they were going D1 while dropping Football and Wrestling a day after the Wrestling team had just captured its third consective National Championship. Watch it and tell me if it all passes the smell test to you.

You give the NCAA too much credit...if more stories didn't come out and the media moved on to something else the NCAA would slap OSU on the wrist allowing the self imposed sanctions to stand. They aren't getting their ducks in a row, they are waiting things out hoping it all goes away. (just like Auburn) Once the Buckeyes are a non-story again the NCAA will show it's true colors.

The only way the hammer truly comes down is if the NCAA feels OSU just thumbed their nose at them. They don't like to be insulted or jerked around. Ask Jerry Tarkanian. His team was getting players suspended for not paying off the mini bar tabs. The NCAA has a huge ego, if they felt OSU was dicking them around and thought they were bigger than the NCAA THEN they will put the beatdown on Tressel and Co. It will also get real bad, they will look for everything they can find and nail them for it. Every two bit infraction that every school commits will become a hug deal. Don't upset the ego of the NCAA.

As it is, if nothing else comes out the NCAA will probably go to OSU and say you can either fire Sweatervest and take a years suspension or risk major repercussions. In the end it will come down to OSU's choice not the NCAA.

It doesn't, and Trev Alberts is an idiot who keeps failing upward in an Isiah Thomas-esque fashion.

But the OTL team did some monumental funky accounting in that story, too. Like claiming the athletic teams should get accounting credit for all the non-scholarship players on its team, ignoring that tiny insignificant issue of educational expenses that tuition is going towards.

If the kid is paying his way to be at school, thats more money into the university's coffers. Odds are the kid wouldn't be there if it wasn't for his sport of choice being there. Heck, there's been some studies among some D3 schools showing that one of the best ways for them to increase enrollment and revenue is to start up a football program there, as those kids pretty much all have to pay to play there. Being a D2 programs, most of the football guys are at best only getting a half scholorship to be there, and are paying part of their way to be there in Omaha. The money isn't exactly going into the athletic departments coffers, but it was going into UNO's coffers on the whole. Either way, the bleeding wasn't as bad as what Trev is saying it was.

Re: College Football V: Bowls Are Done; Carry On My Wayward Sons

Just an idle $.02 to ponder during the summer before the 2011 college football season begins.

The University of Colorado [CU] joins the Pac 10, now the Pac 12, along with Utah this season. The CU schedule this coming season includes a game versus Pac 12 member University of California, also known as Cal Berkeley. The CU-Cal game will NOT be counted as a conference game for either school. I repeat the CU-Cal game will NOT be a conference game.

College football non-conference schedules often are made years in advance. In this case, several years ago CU and Cal had scheduled a game to be played this fall--2011. Subsequent to the game being scheduled, CU was invited to become a member of the Pac 10. Once Colorado accepted the offer to jump from the Big 12 to the Pac 10/12, the athletic directors of the Pac 12 determined that CU would not be able to find another non-conference game on relatively short notice if the game against Cal were to be counted as a conference game.

I know it's somewhat tortured logic on the part of the pac 12 ADs, but the CU-Cal game will be a non-conference game, meaning that CU and Cal will play a different number of conference games than the other ten schools in the Pac 12. In the long run it may have no effect on determining the order of finish in either division of the Pac 12 since CU is going to be terrible this season. I'm not sure what the projections are for Cal. It's just an oddity that the schools will play each other in what will be a non-conference game. Count on seeing magazines and other periodicals which will say the CU-Cal game is a conference game when, in fact, it is not.

Why would they play a different number of conference games than everyone else? both schools are still playing 9 conference games, just like everyone else. They just happen to play a 10th on in a non-conference setting.

Re: College Football V: Bowls Are Done; Carry On My Wayward Sons

Yeah, it's not going to count in the conference standings while they play 9 other teams, just like how conference championship games don't count.

Re: College Football V: Bowls Are Done; Carry On My Wayward Sons

Eh, same thing happens with holiday tournament among conference members in hockey, not too earth shattering.
