Re: College Football V: Bowls Are Done; Carry On My Wayward Sons
USC fans will be even more apoplectic.

Let's be honest, they have every right to be upset. What they did now isn't even in the same solar system as what tOSU has been caught doing and they got hit harder.
So true..life's a ***** though.Let's be honest, they have every right to be upset. What they did now isn't even in the same solar system as what tOSU has been caught doing and they got hit harder.

While I often subscribe to that theory, I don't think it is the right attitude to have right now. (and it certainly isnt the attitude the NCAA should have) Especially for someone who loves the Sioux so much...does "Lifes a *****" apply to the beloved name as well?
If only some schools had the balls to stick up to the NCAA and leave..It has always been that way though. Why did SMU get the death penalty when every school in the South West Conference was doing the exact same thing and had been doing it for longer? Why did UNLV get ripped to shreds when plenty of teams were committing the same violations?
The NCAA is like NHL Hockey, they punish how they choose, who they choose and when they choose. Since no colleges will leave the NCAA they can act with total impunity.

They could but its go where?? The NAIA gets nothing in the way of coverage from ESPN. The lower divisions of the NCAA get their championship for most of their sports on ESPN simply because the NCAA can package them together with ESPN in a take it or leave it deal for them. The CIS isn't much better either, and they would have a hairy fit about letting a USA school into their ranks.
That's just it. It would take a collection of big schools who make the NCAA lots of money to do it, and there's no chance that ever happens. EVER.
From what I can tell- the difference is rumors vs. facts. We all know (knew) that teams like A&M and UT paid off their players, just like SMU did. But disguntled players at SMU told on them. That, and they did it more than once, with proof both times. The death penalty came from the proof going as deep as it did.
but after watching that SMU special on ESPN, I doubt that anyone else will get the death penalty unless it's REALLY bad.
As for USC vs. tOSU... while it may seem like the hand of NCAA is really loud in LA, I don't see the last of the hand being shown in Columbus. It got deeper very quickly, and I think the NCAA is taking their time to make sure the ducks are in a row. Based on their collective silence, I doubt that tOSU's current sanctions on themselves will satisfy the NCAA.
(similar can be said about what is going on in Boise- some of the local papers who were pro BSU are starting to pile on, since the only way they could get the documents was a difficult struggle via the freedom of information act. This from a public university.... to me, silence from the ncaa is very bad for a particular program)
ESPN OTL: Wrestling with the Truth at UNO
This aired Sunday, about how Nebraska-Omaha announced that they were going D1 while dropping Football and Wrestling a day after the Wrestling team had just captured its third consective National Championship. Watch it and tell me if it all passes the smell test to you.
It doesn't, and Trev Alberts is an idiot who keeps failing upward in an Isiah Thomas-esque fashion.
But the OTL team did some monumental funky accounting in that story, too. Like claiming the athletic teams should get accounting credit for all the non-scholarship players on its team, ignoring that tiny insignificant issue of educational expenses that tuition is going towards.
Just an idle $.02 to ponder during the summer before the 2011 college football season begins.
The University of Colorado [CU] joins the Pac 10, now the Pac 12, along with Utah this season. The CU schedule this coming season includes a game versus Pac 12 member University of California, also known as Cal Berkeley. The CU-Cal game will NOT be counted as a conference game for either school. I repeat the CU-Cal game will NOT be a conference game.
College football non-conference schedules often are made years in advance. In this case, several years ago CU and Cal had scheduled a game to be played this fall--2011. Subsequent to the game being scheduled, CU was invited to become a member of the Pac 10. Once Colorado accepted the offer to jump from the Big 12 to the Pac 10/12, the athletic directors of the Pac 12 determined that CU would not be able to find another non-conference game on relatively short notice if the game against Cal were to be counted as a conference game.
I know it's somewhat tortured logic on the part of the pac 12 ADs, but the CU-Cal game will be a non-conference game, meaning that CU and Cal will play a different number of conference games than the other ten schools in the Pac 12. In the long run it may have no effect on determining the order of finish in either division of the Pac 12 since CU is going to be terrible this season. I'm not sure what the projections are for Cal. It's just an oddity that the schools will play each other in what will be a non-conference game. Count on seeing magazines and other periodicals which will say the CU-Cal game is a conference game when, in fact, it is not.
