Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

A commentary of the quality of play- feel free to ignore it, but I think I would feel better if I get this off my chest.

While I wasnt planning on watching the whole game (thank you 8:40 start time), I was hoping to at least see the first half and be very entertained by the play. Having seen both teams a few times throughout the season, the offensive expectations were high, but tempered with the experience that bowl games are usually played poorly due to the time off.

Making the story short- I went to bed to read at 9:20, since the book was a lot more entertaining. Yes, you could see that the defenses were well prepared to play this game. But, good Lord, were the offenses terrible. It made the beginning of the game as boring as watching grass grow, and I was constantly flipping channels to find a distraction to keep me awake. Thankfully, Mrs Alfa was watching the Bachelor in another room, and short outbursts from her lifted me from my brief slumber.

This morning, I was half expecting some great score once both sides got rolling. But no- Oregon tied it at 19(!?) late in the game only to allow Auburn to kick a field goal to win the game. So going to bed, I missed roughly- nothing.

As was commented earlier- this culminated a rather poor bowl season to watch- I try to watch bowl games for the fun of it, and very few of them were all that entertaining- the UNC-TNN game was the most, as the game ended in multiple disasters. I was lucky to miss all but a handful of downs by the losses of the B10- and didn't see much of their wins, either.

All in all, the only game I remember was the Tarheels vs. Volunteers- and that was more for how pathetic the game ended.

I wonder where we go from here.

TCU would have had more of a case if Oregon had won. Auburn going undefeated with their strength of schedule is a tribute to how professionals would fare in a mostly amateur environment, but since the NCAA chose to punt on that issue until 2013, you're stuck saying "Huh, 8 wins over the top 25, including 4 wins over the top 10, or 1 win over the top 10. "

You guys need to start kissing some serious Yale *** if you want to be consistent on your view of polls.

Notre Dame at #33. All's right with the world.

I'm thinking LSU will be the preseason favorite in the SEC

And they might be losing their coach to Michigan, which could lead to recruits decommitting and transfers...

I largely agree with your comments, but also wanted to add that the field did not seem right, or they didn't bring enough different types of shoes. Way more guys slipping around than there should have been on an indoor field, which should theoretically have perfect conditions.

TCU had fancy new Nike cleats in the Rose Bowl, and they were slipping like crazy until they put some athletic tape undernearth the hard plastic on the arch of the foot.

Wisconsin, in boring old Adidas shoes, had no such issues. Wisconsin also played most of their games on artificial surfaces.

That's 5 in a row for the SEC. Next year will make it 6.

Auburn's AD assured reporters that Cecil Newton was not at the game.

Ooops

How long was that after the final whistle? They said on TV that he wasn't at the game, but was in the Phoenix area somewhere.

Amazing what happens when you have an entire conference that cheats (except for Vanderbilt...maybe).

I was really rooting for Oregon. What a collapse by the defense after they scored the tying 2pt. conversion.

It was an unfortunate play that was the biggest dagger. The 37 yard run where a tackle was made but the Auburn RB's knee never touched was the killer and I think Oregon about gave up after that.

That being said, as much as I hate to say it, the better team rightfully won on that day.

Now we wait to see how long it takes for the title to be stripped.

Basically my feelings also. Auburn was the better team, but were also dirty and got some breaks from the refs. To me the worst is still not tossing #32 from Auburn after a deliberate knee to the Oregon kid's head well after the play. The guy had blood streaming down the side of his head, and all that's called is a 15-yard penalty?

Agree with all of this.

UO still could have had this game despite the 2 INTs in the first quarter and the 4th down fail. Not shabby.
