Re: College Football II: The BCS hits the Fan

Fresno State and Nevada Agree to stay til 2012.

Also of note.
The WAC will pursue an eight-team football membership and possibly a 10-team overall membership for 2012-13. Montana, Texas State, Texas-San Antonio and non-football playing Denver and Seattle are among candidates to join the conference.

According to sources, if Montana decides to go from FCS to FBS then the Grizzlies would be in the WAC and either both Texas schools or just one in all sports. The league would then look to either Denver or Seattle to join in all sports but football. If Montana decides to stay put then the most likely scenario is both Texas schools joining the WAC along with Denver and Seattle.

Re: College Football II: The BCS hits the Fan

I would have thought that a school like Norte Dame would have had a better system for filming practice than a just a kid in a scissors lift.

Don't want to make fun of this, but ND should be able to afford a permanent structure. UM has one for the Marching Band, for crying out loud. Such a tragedy.

And yet, UM still has (and uses) scissor lifts. Why? Because they're mobile and you can get any angle you want.

The fact that ND has lifts isn't the issue. The fact that they were using them in 50+ mph winds is.

Yeah, not a time for jokes. I assume we'll all learn a bit more about how this could have happened. Regardless, it probably isn't about money or something logical...more likely a series of acts of omission more than comission. The loss of any young person's life is difficult to face, moreso when the circumstances seem so preventable. I'll probably hug my kids a little longer tonight when I get home...it is easy to forget how lucky we are to go through our daily routine and not have to face a tragedy such as this from a personal perspective.

This.

Every lift made has a wind rating. It is the responsibility of the user (who in this case tragically died) and his supervisor to not use the lift when that wind rating is exceeded (typically 20mph).

I thought I heard ESPN say the kid tweeted 20-45 mins before he died that it was "very scary" being up there. The team practiced indoors the day before, and I cant imagine what kind of productive practice they were having outdoors with 50 MPH winds.

I know that there's some company in Pennsylvainia that is making and selling an overhead camera system that would be able to do everything that a scissor lift can do and then some. It would be pretty simple for most schools in the Big Ten to afford putting them up on their practice fields and turf buildings as well.

www*****ecam.comgrrr.... for some reason you can't say Wave in a link I guess.

Yeah, just google Wavecam

He did, it's on his Facebook page.

ND's aerial lift policy says that it is the operator's responsibility to inspect for weather and wind conditions before using the lift. I would imagine that going forward, there's going to be a firmer policy in place regarding weather conditions and strongly encouraging operators to be sure that they'll be safe before they go up.

Hrm... I wonder if the kid was intimidated by the team and coaching staff... In the sense that he didn't want to distups Kelly's practice... I mean, he was just 20 and a video kid... I'm sure he liked the fact that he was a part of ND Football...

Not that this goes against the kid, the football staff, or the school... I'm sure we all have been in a position where we didn't speak up for fear of rocking the boat...

I've read on a local news outlet that OSHA is looking into it, now.

I've read on a local news outlet that OSHA is looking into it, now.

As I understand, it was a paid position, so I think that would be normal.

@Raceboarder, I think he was more likely motivated by a sense of duty than a sense of intimidation.

His final tweets:

"Gust of wind up to 60mph well today will be fun at work ... I guess I've lived long enough :-/"
(emphasis mine)
"Holy f-- holy f--- this is terrifying

The last tweet was at 4:06. The tower collapsed ~4:50.

ETA:

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — A strong gust of wind swept across Notre Dame's practice football field before a tower toppled, killing a student who had been videotaping the team from the tower, the university's athletic director said Thursday.

Declan Sullivan, a 20-year-old junior from Long Grove, Ill., died Wednesday at a South Bend hospital after the hydraulic scissor lift he was on fell over at the LaBar practice complex. Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick promised there would be a full investigation, but did not say who was responsible for allowing the student to use the lift.

Speaking to reporters for the first time since the accident, Swarbrick described a normal practice that quickly became chaotic on Wednesday. He said he was walking along the football field when suddenly, the wind picked up and equipment began flying.

"I turned to face north and experienced a pretty extraordinary burst of wind. Things started flying by me that had been stationary for all of practice — Gatorade containers, towels, etc. I noticed the netting by the goal post start to bend dramatically and I heard a crash," he said.

Swarbrick said training staff, medical trainers, coachers, players responded to Sullivan, but after emergency workers arrived, the team went back to the field so the rescuers could help the student. Sullivan was taken to a South Bend hospital, but Swarbrick said he received a call from the ambulance before it arrived that Sullivan was no longer breathing.

The National Weather Service said winds in the area were gusting to 51 mph at the time when the hydraulic scissor lift, which can be lowered or raised depending on needs, fell over. The football team had practiced indoors the day before because of the blustery conditions caused by a fierce storm.

It was not clear specifically who authorized Sullivan to go up in the scissor lift to videotape Wednesday's practice, but Swarbrick said it was the decision to practice outside was left up to individual programs at the university. As a student worker, Sullivan reported to a video coordinator associated with the team.

Whatever the official policy, and whether the student felt obligated or duty-bound . . . if you have a shred of integrity you don't put the student in the position to make that call.

Anyone have the link to Jim Tressel's comments on Tuesday? I saw them briefly on ESPN but haven't seen them anywhere else. When winds hit Columbus he moved practice indoors and at a press conference said something to the effect of "It's not just about the players, I'm concerned about the film guy in a tower 50' off the ground." I'm not normally a fan of the Sweater Vest, but he gets kudos from me for not even putting his people in that position.
