Re: College Football II: The BCS hits the Fan

I'd try to follow the path that worked for other schools in similar situations. If you want to build a program like Wisconsin or Iowa, then follow that same blueprint - hire a talented assitant from a big-name program that wants to build a program. Barry Alvarez came to UW as Lou Holtz's DC at Notre Dame, and part of the attraction was the ability to be the man and build a program from scratch. Kirk Ferentz came from the NFL as an OL coach, but had previous HC experience at Maine.

Tressel- Youngstown State- sadly, that seems to be working pretty well for the buckeyes.

There's a lot of quality in D1aa, especially if you are also familiar with the territory.

You could probably throw Mark Stoops (DC-Florida State) on a list too, but I think he'll probably wait 2-3 years before taking a head job. He graduated from Iowa, so he does have some Big 11.5 ties.

Edit: I think 2-3 years because right now, the D is better, but still got annihilated at Oklahoma. Given 2-3 years of top 10-15 recruits, the defense will be frightening, and he'll be able to turn it into a HC job the way Kirby Smart is likely taking Mark Richt's job this winter.

Brady Hoke? 12-0 start at Ball State in 2008 (12-2 finish) and currently 4-2 at San Diego State after upsetting Air Force.

I would still lean toward an up-and coming tough coach from a D1AA school. If they can work with the talent they have on a regular enough basis- I think they will do a great job when resources are given to them. It's about getting the most out of what you have and can get (Tressell) and not forcing a oval peg into a round hole (Rodriguez).

Notre Dame may win their next four games (Navy, Tulsa, Utah, Army) running their record to 8-3 with a 6-game winning streak. They'll start getting votes and heads will asplode. :-)

I think the Utah game will be significant...they may be undefeated but people will be suspect of their qualifications to be in the top 5. For the first time in, forever, people in many big football towns will be rooting for ND that weekend. If the QB can become more consistent week to week then ND may have a chance...if he can't relax and make the obvious completion then they are in trouble.

Marc Trestman, now coaching the Montreal Alouettes, is said to be one of 3-4 candidates on the shortlist. Eh?

He's my #1 candidate right now. I really like his resume. Plus the fact that he's in the CFL doesn't really matter. A certain former vikings coach came out of there.

I think a lot of football towns were pulling for the Irish in the Bush Push game. Our interests and theirs coincide whenever we play a top 10 team, which means we've let them down pretty much every game for a decade.

The PAC-12 Championship will be held on the campus of the team with the higher ranking?

Well, there's no good neutral site stadiums, from what I can tell. You could have it at a nearby NFL stadium (Seattle, SF/Oak, Phoenix, whatever they used to use in LA) but you run the risk of looking like the ACC during a BC/Virginia Tech (27,360) title game in Florida if you have a game in LA and Oregon is playing Arizona State. And the PAC-10's interest in football from their fans is probably closer to the ACC overall than the SEC or BigInteger.

In that case, you may as well have a home game.

So now what? Every team can charge their season ticket holders for the Pac-12 Championship game with their season ticket packages and give a refund to those who ask for it if their team doesn't host?

Wouldn't surprise me. It's a heck of a lot more money that way then having 22,000 people in the Rose Bowl because both teams are a thousand miles away on one or two week's notice. The Big XII and SEC have interior neutral fields that are reasonably close. Atlanta is 12 hours from Fayetteville, 9 hours from Baton Rouge, and 6 hours or less from every other school. Indianapolis and/or Chicago is similarly central for the future Big Ten, which is probably why they'll never go to Detroit, Minnesota, Cleveland,or Green Bay. The Big XII rotated between Kansas City and assorted Texas cities so it was a "neutral" home site atmosphere for either the North or the South.

The PAC-10 and ACC are spread out along coasts and don't have a good centralized spot. The ACC might finally get their wish of a Florida State-Miami rematch in the title game and the game this year is in Charlotte.

This Oregon-UCLA game is a real nailbiter...
