Re: College Football II: The BCS hits the Fan

How? If the penalties are offsetting, isn't the play just a do over?

A personal foul call is imposed separate from another foul. They would penalize Tennessee (about a foot) then impose the personal foul (15 yards).

Re: College Football II: The BCS hits the Fan

Down goes Jake Locker.

Seemed a little shaken, but said he "is fine."

Re: College Football II: The BCS hits the Fan

Another SEC loss. Georgia loses to Colorado.

I think this reinforces the notion that the Dawgs are too chicken to play the Ducks.

Re: College Football II: The BCS hits the Fan

The Washington-USC game is the closest of the night.

31-29 USC, Washington ball. 2:34 left.

Edit: What a finish. UW wins 32-31

Epically poor coaching by Lane Kiffin. He's the only person in the entire stadium that thought Houston could make that kick. He is the worst kicker in USC history.

Re: College Football II: The BCS hits the Fan

Just got home from the Heights and ND's sound beating of the Angry Chickens. My thoughts on the game:

- Well-played by the Irish, but they need to stop the fumbles. They got lucky on that second one only leading to a field goal. It could have gotten much uglier.

- Surprising amount of penalties by BC. A lot of them were holding calls, caused by solid pressure applied all night by the Irish (something not seen in a while)...but it was clear that the Irish intent was to harass the QB, both of them, in order to disrupt the offense.

Decent game, but put it in the books where it belongs and focus on Pitt next.

Glad I got to see the Irish win and Alumni Stadium empty out like a rat's nest on a sinking ship.

You should have been happy with just the win considering how pathetic ND has been...

Now, as to actual relevant games...

Glad Oregon stomped Harbaugh and Stanford.

Any chance gameday is in Ann Arbor next week?

Glass houses, stones... the south ND section was at least a quarter empty midway through the third quarter.

The mini student section was kinda cool, though. I really should have headed down there a little earlier than I did.

I'd give it a 90% chance. The other games of importance would be Alabama @ the other USC, LSU@Florida, or maybe Arkansas @Texas A&M. Going to Michigan would give ESPN a chance to slurp Robinson, and MSU's story with Dantonio is compelling too.

Re: College Football II: The BCS hits the Fan

Oh well, Oregon played a great second half and they're tough to stop when they get going. Their downfield blocking was pretty impressive, makes it hard to hold them under several yards per play. I suppose I can live with an 11-1 season. Should be fun against USC next week with both teams playing with a chip on their shoulder!

Probably Michigan, but it might be Coral Gables. Florida State-Miami is the 8pm ABC game.

I don't know which play you were referring to, but this is true only if the personal foul occurred after the play was whistled dead.

I saw a QB that still can't make the right decision 3 times in a row, an offense that get's far too predictable as the game goes on...it's like they have 200 plays but only plan to use 8 of them each game.

I guess it works sometimes (punter?) but Kelly screaming at everybody as they come off the field is going to get old fast. I don't think Crist needs to spend all of his time after an unsuccessful series getting screamed at. There is a point at which you realize the people on your staff aren't suddenly going to get smarter etc and then you need to lead them...screaming at your QB all game isn't sending him out there next time with confidence...he looks more tentative than he did early in the year.

He came to the school as a pro-set style QB and is obviously struggling with the new offense...ripping him a new one every frickin series isn't suddenly going to make him a spread QB.

Ruffer has been great on FG's but last night was struggling to hit the 15 on kickoffs.

BC is bad...if they played Stanford it would be 60-0; that the Irish were struggling with them and their 2 first time QB's tells me that they better take advantage of the weak part of their schedule and vastly improve or they are at least looking at losing to Utah, USC and losing a bowl game to finish the year.

Re: College Football II: The BCS hits the Fan

First--removing the helmet is not a personal foul, it is unsportsmanlike conduct.

Second--the appropriate rule for unsportsmanlike conduct is rule 9-2-1-a-1-(f): "Removal of a player's helmet before he is in the team area (Exceptions: Team, media or injury timeouts; equipment adjustment; through play; between periods; and during a measurement for a first down)." I will leave it to everyone's judgment whether this is "between periods," as the LSU player seems to have legitimately believed that the fourth quarter had ended. Personally, I don't think the refs should have called the helmet removal. You don't penalize that for the same reason you don't penalize the Tennessee coaches and players running onto the field to celebrate prematurely. They believed the game was over; they did not see the flags.

Third--if it had been adjudged to be unsportsmanlike conduct, the ball would have been somewhere between the Tennessee 15 and 16. Rule 10-1-6: "When a live-ball foul by one team is followed by one or more dead-ball fouls..., the penalties are administered separately and in the order of occurrence."

Fourth--The real issue for Tennessee to complain about is rule 3-5-2-e (emphasis added): "While in the process of substitution or simulated substitution, [the offense] is prohibited from rushing quickly to the line of scrimmage with the obvious attempt of creating a defensive disadvantage. If the ball is ready for play, the game officials will not permit the ball to be snapped until [the defense] has placed substitutes in position and replaced players have left the field of play. [The defense] must react promptly with its substitutes."

By rule, the umpire should have stepped on the ball to keep LSU from snapping until Tennessee had settled its substitutions. Of course, that would have been an even more controversial conclusion to the game--the clock hitting :00 with the umpire's foot on the ball.
