College Football 2025

I do think this may become a trend and if it does, especially among the big schools, it’s the end of non playoff bowls. Which would be a shame.
Would it?

Does the world really need the First Responder Bowl and the Xbox Bowl, and the Duke's Mayo Bowl, and the GameAbove Sports Bowl and the Birmingham Bowl and the Potato Bowl and the Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl and the Military Bowl and the Pinstripe Bowl and the Fenway Bowl and the IS4S Salute to Veterans Bowl and the Myrtle Beach Bowl and the Cure Bowl and the Rate Bowl and the Texas Bowl and the New Mexico Bowl and the Holiday Bowl and the LA Bowl and the Alamo Bowl and the Music City Bowl and the Pop-Tarts Bowl and the ReliaQuest Bowl?

No, but those corporations need the publicity; the host cities need the influx of tourist dollars; the students need a (usually) tropical locale for Christmas break; the media need stories; the broadcasters need to fill air time...

But mostly, all that money needs to circulate.

I mean, are the cities even getting the money anymore? I don't think many people are making the trips anymore. As for great tropical locales, I'm not sure Boston, Detriot, Charlotte, or oh my god Shreveport match that description very much. Even the schools have to buy an allotment of tickets that don't sell out and they're left holding the bag. So I'm not sure who this is for anymore. I know the teams get an extra month of practice, which was usually worth more to them than the honor of winning the Nutscratch Bowl, but even that has lost some effect in an era where half of your team might leave during the offseason.

Bowl Games are mostly just to fill airtime for ESPN. They are cheap for them to run, and get better ratings than Poker/Hot Dog Eating Contests/ NFL Talking Heads Show #269. I know in the past, WMU fans like getting the Detroit bowl because it is close to most alums, and I'm sure CMU fans will attend it well this season since they had their first good season in a while.

I would prefer to have a FCS style tournament. But a tourney that includes all conferences isn't going to happen because the B10 and SEC are too busy extracting any drop of value from it before they leave. But barring that, all the bowl games don't hurt anyone, and gives alums an excuse to go on vacation and avoid their extended family during the holidays, which I can appreciate.

Oh yeah, I don't think anyone's arguing they should actively be eliminated, but I also wouldn't be surprised if the number of them dwindles as they become less profitable.

Funneling money to the 3 corporations that own media in the US is the opposite of circulating money.

At least the Shreveport one is "silver age" (Independence Bowl, 1976).

Have a 16-team NC$$ field play 15 bowl games. Rotate the SFs and F between the four GOATs:

GOATs (4): Rose, Orange, Sugar, Cotton
Meh (6): Peach, Fiesta, Sun, Gator, Citrus, Bluebonnet
Stupid But We Need to Pad It Out (4): Liberty, Independence, Aloha, Pineapple
Essential to Bring Back (1): Cigar Bowl. Played in 1907 through 1946 in Havana Fucking Cuba before moving to Tampa.

All of those are better than Boise. Especially since the ski resorts nearby are commonly not ready by the time the bowl game is played. That being said, we’ve been to that game once when we were in Idaho when my vandals were there.
