Apparently the proposed PAC 12 deal with Apple was tiered.

23 million per school to start
30 million per school if they reached 2.5 million subscribers
50 million per school if they reached 3.7 million subscribers

For reference, Sunday Ticket only gets 2.4 million subscribers. Granted that’s slightly different because that’s either for NFL super fans or for those living out of market, while this would’ve been exclusive. Maybe this deal could’ve worked for the SEC with their super fandom, or the Big Ten with multiple national fan bases plus huge alumni pools. But of the remaining ten schools in the PAC, you were really asking to get that from eight schools because Stanford and Cal weren’t going to pull in much.

Not sure of it's accuracy, but one quick search shows that B1G schools get $58M from BTN. Which makes the change from the P12 to the B1G a pretty obvious choice. And adding LA, Seattle, and Portland, the numbers should stay pretty steady with the additions.

In an actual comparison, MLS Season Pass is sitting at 1 million plus subscribers so it’s not hard to see something like college football, even the PAC-12, hit 2.5 million subscribers.

I’m curious to see what will happen with the B1G as cable subscription numbers continue to fall. The bubble has already burst on the RSNs and it’s starting to at ESPN as well.

One of my favorite things to speculate on with these conference realignments is the impact on the non-football sports (because this is all done purely for football).

Basketball probably won’t change much with the PAC schools. Yeah UCLA and USC but they’re not as good as people think.

B1G volleyball just turned into a murder factory by adding USC and Washington.

RIP to any track athlete who just signed on with a current B1G school. Things were already looking bleak with USC and UCLA coming in and now they’re adding Nike I mean Oregon.

Also RIP to B1G softball, UCLA and Washington will be continuing their conference championship rivalry.

USC going to the Rose Bowl as the Big Ten champion is going to be such a mindf*ck.

Does the Big Ten now add schools from FL and TX to tie up every major market in the US?

Too bad we never got a Colorado/Nebraska Rose Bowl while it was still a possibility.

Nice try, even with four teams Cal will still never make the Rose Bowl.

1959!

Yikes, I had no idea.

I thought they were good in the 60s?

Edit: no, they were good in the 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s. Woof. They're the Maple Leafs.

So ESPN is showing their alliance. They have to SEC people talking about expansion and how the SEC doesn't need any of that. Even though the SEC has a few of the highest netting universities for football, as well has they don't exactly distribute the money evenly. In terms of raw money, B1G is a lot easier to take as a minor school than the SEC is.

The issue they bring up for travel is kind of bunk, to me. The B1G can afford to fly their athletes, for one thing. So the reality of flying from Rutgers to either Ann Arbor or LA is actually a matter of couple of hours each way. Compare that to driving from Happy Valley to Columbus.... Come on. As for them losing the college experience- the student athlete already do by having to spend so much time in training and practice- they actually travel less than that. Let alone they now have easy to interact virtual access to their classes (the big positive that came from COVID). And thanks to satellites, students can even attend classes while flying from A to B- which is something they could not do back in the day of travel.

Yes, travel is a huge issue for student athletes, but thanks for flying (rich schools) and computers- it's not nearly what they want to make it out to be, as I see it.

As a USC fan, I've thought of that, too.

However, it doesn't matter, because the Rose Bowl tradition was already dead. They were already slated to be part of the playoff schedule for the next four years or so, with no guarantee of getting any team in their game. Unlike before when they hosted a semifinal game and the committee did try to give them a Pac-12 and/or B1G team, if they made the playoffs.

Bingo. Rose Bowl is basically dead forever. I'd still go if the gophers made it but honestly, they screwed it.

So Harbaugh's negotiated penalty fell through. What I'm seeing is that this means he'll coach for all of 2023, and whatever penalty happens will be in 2024.

And I gotta say, homers can be pretty annoying. Pretty much all of mgoblog focus only on the fact that Harbaugh bought some potential recruits cheeseburgers. When the real fault was that the visit was outside of the recruiting window. And they don't even acknowledge the practice accusations of too many coaches and improper monitoring.

None of that is all that serious.

The accusation that is serious is the one where he's being accused of blocking the investigation.

The one area that I think is more likely for Jim is that 2023 will be his last season at Michigan, as he will pull a Pete Carroll and skirt any penalties as he's coaching in the NFL.

And I would be ok with that. I really don't think he's THE reason Michigan has gotten significantly better in the last couple of seasons- it's the people he brought in. Granted, he did bring them in, but now that they are here, pick the best one to replace the head coach next spring. Few of the current staff were around when the problems happened (early 2021, with COVID rules in place), and the significant one who did play a part is now coaching in Baltimore.

Harbaugh is not the next Bo, Bo was relatively young when he got here- 40. Jim was 52. Heck, even Woody was younger when he got to OSU- 38.

If I were a Michigan fan, I wouldn't be so quick to cast away Harbaugh. The worst thing you can do is change a coaching staff in college football.

I'm not really casting him away, I'm betting he goes and gets and NFL job which will avoid any punishment from the NCAA. Just pointing out that I'm ok with that.

Then again, I also want to hire from within and keep the staff. They have proved to be rather brilliant. Jim's done a great job assembling a team, but it took a few tries.

Let's say, the most radical thing you can do.

Sometimes it is the right thing.
