College Football 2021: Cash is King

And has the most NCAA team titles and a (roughly) 40 year streak of at least one title a year. Their water polo stadium (https://gostanford.com/facilities/avery-aquatic-center/4) is 50x better than most school's swimming pool. It does make you wonder what selling out everything for CFB (and CBB) will do.

It won't do anything, it will just increase the enormous gulf between the Stanford that Taiwanese engineers attend and the "Stanford" that athletes, legacies, and rich kids attend. It was always two schools, this just formally announces it.

The college sports talk channel on SiriusXM (8x?) claimed UCLA has been running red (8 digits red) in athletics for a few years. They figure the sure $100M (as high as $120M) the B1G cut would get them was a no brainer so the wheels set in motion.

If the big ten expands to basic cable in LA, you're talking massive increase in revenue. That's the #2 media market at 5.7M people. They're only missing DFW, SFO, Atlanta, and Houston at that point.

Here's the full list of who they have, likely in, and potential candidates (some are stretches). There are a lot of CA markets and I could see them going after a bunch of the UC programs and stanford.

Edit: DUke could be in play as well. [TABLE="width: 756"]

You're going to pick up a lot of eyeballs in Phoenix/Vegas. Tons of Midwest transplants down there who will drop everything to turn on Michigan State/UCLA and Wisconsin/USC not to mention Ohio State vs. either.

If they play their cards right each Saturday from 11am-midnight will be scheduled with games featuring ranked B1G teams playing each other. Must see TV.

Like I said earlier in the thread:

If the B1G truly cares about the Academic side of things, I could see them adding Rice to get their foot in the Texas door... Sports-wise it's adding another Northwestern, but academically, it seems to be pretty solid.

Not for anyone who cares about tradition...

Sorry if I don't watch USC and UCLA play now why the hell would I care about them just because they joined our conference? I dont care about Rutgers or Maryland...hell I barely care about Nebraska and Penn State. All of this unnecessary expansion (and the fake Final Four they run for funsies) has diluted what was once an awesome product. Now it is a more annoying version of the NFL.

They do. Very much so. Qualifying for the Big Ten Academic Alliance is a hard line I don't think the Big Ten schools on the academic side would really want to cross. The average school in the Big Ten pulls in 10x in R&D what their athletics programs pull in. If you don't add to that, you aren't going to qualify. I would think somewhere in the range of $500M to $750M is kind of a minimum qualification. Preferred will be in the $750M-$1.0B Average today is north of $600M. WHich is why I think Mizzou, Kansas, and Rice would be hard sells.

AAU membership is almost certainly a hard requirement as well.

Other preferences are
  • enrollment - Typically north of 30,000, but I don't think this is a hard minimum.
  • Public is a plus
    • USC will be only the third private to have ever been a member (Chicago, NW)
    • For privates, I suspect non-sectarian is pretty important, perhaps Notre Dame will be the only exception. Maybe Duke. Again, most of these rules are fungible if you have other qualifications.
  • Tier 1 athletics - call it power 5 for at least several sports
  • Medical school is a plus
  • ABET engineering programs are a plus
  • Land-grant is a plus - though, I'm not sure if this is just an artifact of the other characteristics, I suspect it might be
Where it will get interesting is what's happening with the politics side of things. I suspect the Big Ten regents and chancellors don't want anything to do with these wackadoo laws like Texas and Florida are implementing. Perhaps not because they personally disagree with them, but it's not really a great prospect for the future of these schools. Women, LGBTQ, minorities, who's going to want to attend a school where they may be imprisoned or hunted? So I really think Texas, Rice, Mizzou, and Georgia Tech are going to be hard sells as well. I'm also sure the Big Ten wants no more scandals like we've had with PSU, MSU, and several others.

I also think Rice cares more about sticking with Texas than they do about much else, so, again, one more stirke against them.

The thing about that market list is it's just about population. But NOBODY in the NYC market cares about college football. If I were looking for valuable college football markets as an advertiser, I would not ranke NYC in the top 50.

Take an easier example: hockey. Would you break your neck for the Houston and Miami and Phoenix markets? Sure, you'd want to be in them because meh why not, but none of those places have the number of hockey fans as Detroit or Buffalo.

I still think the Big Ten is going to end up with
Washington
Oregon
at least two more California schools
Notre Dame
with an outside shot at Arizona, Colorado, UNC, Pitt, Georgia Tech (despite what they have going against them, they fit everything but geographically)

Edit: I'm actually crossing oregon off the top tier list. I didn't realize they only spent $100M on research. That's less than North Dakota and only 2x UMD. Not happening.

Doesn't matter if they don't care. What matters is whether the BTN can negotiate the channel onto basic cable. Which they have in NYC. Tons of transplants there.

I have no particular reasoning for this, but I keep seeing the AZ schools go SEC as Texas and Oklahoma are. Maybe I'm hoping too much that there's even the slightest attempt for this to make geographic sense, and in that regard I am probably horribly wrong.

I also feel this gets done and both conferences wake up in the middle of the night realizing they forgot about Colorado and Utah, and then both immediately really they don't care and go back to sleep.

I can't imagine the state legs allowing UO and UW to split off from OSU and WSU. And there is no way on Satan's searingly hot brown Earth that UA and ASU will be split.

Frankly I am amazed UCLA is allowed to split from Cal. I guess the explanation as that former post that UCLA was just hemorrhaging money.

I've always wanted Notre Dame in the B1G, but I wanted them in the original 10 while booting Northwestern, for the benefit of both (mostly the latter).

I think CO and Utah are surprising fits for the BIg Ten as well. Both are members of the AAU, CO pulls in $500M/yr in research and UT @ $600M, power 5 athletics, denver and SLC markets. Call me crazy, I don't think the BIg Ten has forgotten about them. Both would be bigger gets than Oregon. Oregon only spends $100M/yr, but is an AAU member and is in the #21 market.

Also, if the Big Ten is destined for 20+ schools, I think you still see 2-4 protected rivalries with the rest rotating. I don't think it's in the financial interest of the conference to have Rutgers play at UCLA a lot. I read somethign that Rutgers is almost as close to Iceland as it is to UCLA.

I didn't think any Pac-12 members would split TBH. Which is why the whole rivalry thing is almost out the door. I would have though it more likely that the entirety of the Pac-12 AAU membership merge with the big ten than see two schools peel off.
