College Football 2021: Cash is King

Also, they’re the same state, but would LA and the Bay Area be considered the same media market?

Nah, several hours apart, no overlap; probably some very very minor markets in between even. Don't get me wrong, the Bay Area is a decent sized market, but if you have to take two more teams you get more bang for your buck by taking UW/UO in my opinion. I guess it comes down to how b1g they want the B1G to be.

Or maybe I'm leaning this way because I think Stanford joining the B1G would be dumb. It's just too large of a footprint to make sense traveling about for every sport.

My question was more in terms of where BTN would be offered, which I realize now is impossible to infer from my post. Yeah, they’re separate media markets, but would that affect if you can find BTN in NorCal? One of the big things in initial Big Ten expansion was cable subscription numbers. If only the LA schools are in the Big Ten, but BTN will be offered by cable companies in the Bay Area, then yeah, Stanford and Cal are not necessarily needed.

Seeing some places on Twitter that Washington and Oregon have also applied, but nothing from any verified accounts.

I can't pretend to know that. There is probably some cross-area interest.

Earlier on I mentioned Stanford/Cal don't control the media market as strongly as other colleges control their markets. But I was reminded elsewhere that the B1G went after Rutgers to get into NYC, so apparently they don't care what their foothold is as long as they have it, so maybe Stanford/Cal are more of a lock.

IIRC Stanford fields the most D-1 teams of any school, and it's pretty close to every possible sport. #2, even more bizarrely, is Harvard.

This move sucks...except it opens up my Saturdays even more.

Sounds like OU and UW applied to join after the announcement.

And has the most NCAA team titles and a (roughly) 40 year streak of at least one title a year. Their water polo stadium (https://gostanford.com/facilities/avery-aquatic-center/4) is 50x better than most school's swimming pool. It does make you wonder what selling out everything for CFB (and CBB) will do.
