That sound you hear? It's Louisville's bubble bursting. Big time.

The implications being laid out by ESPN this morning is really interesting. Brings teams that were holding on with a thread to more of a rope.

One claim (which I don't buy, yet) is the winner of OSU-UM is in, and then suggesting if that's OSU, then the winner of PSU and UW would also get in. Which seems crazy to me.

For sure, though, Clemson is the ACCs only chance, the Big 12 is back in the conversation, the Udub is in a better place, etc.

Seems like the only sure thing at this point is Alabama. And with all the talk of the power of the SEC, they are the only ones. It would take a loss to Auburn AND Florida to change the conversation about 'bama. And even then, with so many 2 loss teams being talked about....

It is crazy. Penn State is @ Rutgers and home against Michigan State.(unless they meet in the championship)

If PSU wins out, and OSU beats UM, then PSU would play in the B1G championship, and the west looks to be Wisconsin.

Given that, it's highly likely that OSU gets into the playoffs with one loss, and possibly the B1G champ gets in with 2 losses (whoever that ends up being). Especially if Clemson does not win the ACC and UW gets beat by WSU.

I think if UM wins out, then the B1G situation changes a lot- as OSU *probably* would get knocked out, as my impression is that a conference champ would be the only way a 2 loss team can get in.

Agreed, a lot of interesting scenarios.

ACC: Clemson is the only team with a legitimate chance. If the Tigers win out, they're in. The only minimal chance I see would be if Clemson were to lose to Wake Forest tomorrow, Louisville would go to the ACC title game. If they were to win that, and enough other craziness happens...maybe the Cardinals can sneak in, but it would take a crazy set of scenarios.

B1G: Realistically, you have Ohio State (win out and in), Michigan (win out and in), Penn State (win out and the U of M beats OSU), and Wisconsin (win out) all with chances to make the Playoff.

Big 12: Oklahoma and West Virginia (if either were to win out) each have a shot, but it would take the right set of scenarios playing out, likely including: (1) Michigan or Ohio State winning out and winning the B1G; AND (2) a 2-loss Pac12 Champion.

Pac 12: Washington (win out) has the easiest path, but Colorado could sneak in if they were to win out and have some results go their way.

SEC: Alabama seems like the only option.

I would rank the teams' chances of making the playoff (note: not necessarily how good the teams are or where they will be ranked), as follows:
1. Alabama
2. Clemson
3. Michigan/Ohio State winner
4. Washington
-----------------------------------------------
5. Oklahoma
6. Wisconsin
7. Penn State
8. West Virginia
9. Colorado/Utah
10. Louisville/Oklahoma State/anyone else?

Ohio State survives Michigan State, 17-16. Michigan also won, 20-10.

Is the loser next week out of the playoff?

Yes. Barring an absolute meltdown almost everywhere else, Ohio State/Michigan loser is eliminated.

Interestingly, it would probably be better for Ohio State to beat Michigan and have Penn State win out, as the Buckeyes are almost guaranteed a playoff spot with only 1 loss, regardless of whether they win the B1G. If Ohio State wins and Penn State drops one of their final two, and then Ohio State loses in the B1G title game, it may knock them out of the Playoff, as I don't see a 2-loss, non-conference champion making the Playoff.

Charlie Strong's time at Texas is over. Just a question of tomorrow or next week.

Re: College Football 2016-17: Destination Tampa

Looks like the Pitt loss really upset Clemson. They're up 28-0 just over two minutes into the 2nd Quarter.

Re: College Football 2016-17: Destination Tampa

Not so fast? Wake Forest with 10 unanswered and we have a game with just over three minutes left in the first half.

Re: College Football 2016-17: Destination Tampa

Illinois didn't kick the ball off to Iowa one time today. Never seen that happen before.

Re: College Football 2016-17: Destination Tampa

How does that even work?

Defer at both first half and second half (I'm assuming bad weather conditions?) and never score (or score only at the end of the first/second half).

I've seen it happen a few different times at the high school level. Never in a major college football game.

Deferring doesn't make much sense in the second half. When you have a choice, you could elect which end of the field you want to defend.

Fair enough. Poor choice of words on my part.

If you win the coin toss, you can elect to: (1) Defer to the 2nd Half; (2) Receive the kickoff; (3) Kickoff; or (4) select which end you want to defend.

If you defer, in the second half you can elect to: (1) Receive the kickoff; (2) Kickoff; or (3) select which end you want to defend.

How I've seen it happen is Team A wins the toss and elects to defer to the 2nd half. Team B then elects to kickoff. Team A doesn't score in the first half.

Team A then elects to receive the kickoff in the second half, and doesn't score in the second half. Result: Team A never kicks the ball off to Team B.

As you pointed out though, Team A could also elect to defend a certain end in the 2nd half, and then Team B elects to Kickoff.

I'm sure there are a few other possibilities as well.
