College Football 2015-16: The Big Ten Rises

Well, that, too. But they also know that from a practicality standpoint, they probably can't make it stand up in court anymore, either. We're a long way from 1987.

Not only that, but by "killing" a school, you open the floodgates... Say PSU gets the death penalty... PSU then provides inside info to what Michigan is doing illegally (paying players, illegal benefits, whatever) to try and save their rear. Michigan then spills the beans on Ohio St... OSU then talks on Florida, who then rats on Bama... And so on and so on...

Messy situation for sure when everyone is breaking rules and not covering that well...

I'll bet the factory schools rat each other continuously, without even an investigation to spur them. There is no honor among thieves.

Re: College Football 2015-16: The Big Ten Rises

What would SMU have amounted to had they not cheated in the first place? And the death penalty should all but kill a program and used more often. I'm tired of reading of programs like UNC grossly abuse the rules and most likely end up with a slap on the wrist. The Gophers were rightfully punished for Ganglegate, UNC should not get away with doing easily the same if not much worse.
Or, what would they have amounted to had they not been caught.

SMU wasn't the only school in college football who was cheating then (or even perhaps now). They just made a number of mistakes in how they went about it, and they got caught. Every school they were competing against for recruits in that area were doing the exact same thing.

I have no problem with severe punishment, but MN's penalties for it's Clem Haskins indiscretions weren't even in the same universe as the death penalty for any college program, in any college sport. The minute you shut a program down for one or two years, completely, all the current players leave and no recruits will come.

Take away scholarships, take away tournament appearances, take away bowl appearances, a program will survive and can actually rebuild. SMU proved that you can't just shut down a major program for two years and expect that it will be able to rebuild into even an average program for a long, long time.

I have a hard time believing the death penalty would be anything more than a temporary setback for powerhouses like Alabama, Ohio St., and USC. It would take a bit longer to recover than losing some scholarships and being banned from bowls for a few years, but I still don't see it lasting as long as it has with SMU.

If the NCAA laid the death penalty on OSU/'BAMA, there would be an injunction while all hell broke loose in a federal court.

There isn't going to be another death penalty, at least not for any school associated with any of the power conferences. I don't see why that's so hard for people to understand. Oh, sure you might see a school like UND or Ohio University or something have their football team killed, but in most cases it would be a mercy killing anyway, and the NCAA would be picking on a team with virtually no influence behind the scenes at the NCAA level.

There will never be another death penalty because everyone, from the NCAA, to the conference administrators to the University Presidents and ADs realize what it means to not only the program, but to the school and to their conference. Even if in some closed room someone suggested that a Minnesota or a Penn State or an Alabama deserved the death penalty for their offenses, that idea would be quickly squashed like a bug. There is too much interdependence between the schools, their conferences and the NCAA in terms of money and job opportunities to ever expect decisions like this would be made at the NCAA level over the objection of people like the BIG commissioner.

I can't believe I have tickets to a Gopher Football game, and I'm actually excited for the game. Last year, I looked forward to the games I went to, but it was more about the experience. Hanging out with friends, tailgating, etc. Tonight, I just want to watch the game. Cautiously optimistic.

I'm going to be there myself, in a group of 8. Should be a pretty amped up crowd, but it's going to be hot and humid. TCU should feel right at home.

Did they finally sell it out? It's a **** shame if not. I even almost bought tickets, but I actually have fallen into the Michigan "Harbaugh" daze, thus I'm intrigued to see how it goes, and I'll be heading to Iowa City tomorrow, just too much going on.

FWIW, I took the rodents to cover the 16.5.
