College Football 2015-16: Bowls, Playoffs, and Offseason

Re: College Football 2015-16: Bowls, Playoffs, and Offseason

I think he's making the distinction at refusing to play. Not their right to voice their opinions.

I don't agree with him.

To me, refusing to play for a specific reason is free speech.

And it's not as if the team is an organized union, they chose as individuals to not play.

(and I understand that you don't agree- neither do I).

The stupid thing about the bill is it came about in a situation where the coach supported the protest. Are you going to fire the coach, too?

This whole thing just sounds like a really great way to self-impose a death penalty.

Bowl season is under way.

Half way through the 3rd, in New Mexico- AZ 42, NM- 24. New Mexico keeps trying to keep themselves in the game, just can't sustain it.

And with just over 4 min left in the first- Utah 35, BYU- 0. Utes are putting an absolute beat down on BYU. And given how much these teams hate each other, they will just run up the score. Then again, they are not exactly trying hard to score- BYU keeps giving the ball back- via turn overs and a couple of pick 6's. Seems like once Mendenhall announced he is going to Virginia, BYU stopped practicing.

Only if one has feelings for BYU other than hate.

Pretty pathetic showing by the cougars.

Sports are funny sometimes, aren't they?:p

Too bad a solid 3 quarters could not overcome the worst quarter. Not sure how to search it, but finding if that's the most points scored by one team in a quarter ever in bowl history is not super easy.

Having grown up not being able to watch anyone else but BYU, I'm far from a fan of theirs.

BTW, in other games...

New Mexico really tried to keep in that game with Arizona. Each time they started, they let AZ score. And the last one could have made it very high drama- holding the wildcats to a FG to stretch the lead to 8. But NM could only get to ~50 until folding under the pressure and turning the ball over. Good Drama.

Ohio v App State- App was up by 4 late in the game when OU had to punt late in the game. And then OU made it interesting by getting a safety. And the ensuing drive got them a go ahead FG. Last drive- App State moved the ball, with a few shocking long plays, and managed to score the game winning FG as time expired. If that drama was not enough, App State's previous 26 points were all scored in the 4th quarter.

Another Sun Belt team in action could not overcome a CUSA game- La Tech beat Ark State- 47-28.

The Last Sun Belt team, Ga State, could not keep up with San Jose State- 27-16- leaving both teams 6-7.....

Sometimes the small school games are epic, sometimes not so much. And I know people don't like bad teams in bowl games, but they can be fun games to watch. Heck, gotta give App State some notes winning their first bowl game in their first try. Also, it's nice that nominally, there are not many games on at once, so one may be forced to watch a Sun Belt team take on a MAC or MW team- and it could be an amazing game.

Did one pick em with who I think would win, and another based on the Pairwise, even though it's a reactive ranking and not a predictive one. After day on, I'm 5/6 and the Pairwise is 4/6, so my chance at the million on ESPN is gone.

So why are these playoff games on new year's eve? Makes no sense to me

Rose said they wouldn't move from NYD, due to tradition and probably the parade. Then the Sugar piggy backed on that and said they wouldn't move either. Since it is the Grandaddy of Them All and the Sugar is big for the SEC, they won negotiations.

Honestly, I didn't think it was that big of a deal. I'm usually at someone's house for NYE, and they have a tv. But I do have a sports centric group of friends, and many are Spartans, so really the game is going to be the focal point of the night. But for others, is it really going to be that bad to put a football game on in the background instead of that awful New Years Rockin' Eve and whatever the other stations put out now? I guess if you go out to the bars it could be an issue since some places do not have many tvs.

However, ESPN did try to get the CFP to change the playoff to the 2nd this year because it's a Saturday, but the CFP said they wanted to get it into everyone's minds about NYE being playoff day so they refused.

I'm on board with all of this.

But at an even more fundamental level, it's pretty clear that the powers-that-be are looking for a new revenue source. Since NYE has been largely untapped by the sports community, it was a tempting target.

Still, as you say, college football is trying to establish a new tradition. So a more sympathetic interpretation would be that there simply were very few unclaimed timeslots left.

Personally, in a normal year, NYE isn't that big a deal for my household. So spending it mostly on Football this time shouldn't be a big problem. HOWEVER, I know quite a few people who do make a big deal out of NYE. And for those that do, it's usually a "sports free" timeslot reserved for couples and/or families. Big picture, I'm guessing that this will cause a bit of friction for lots of people. With that in mind, it will be fascinating to see how the ratings turn out.

Problem is there's probably a large intersection of the sets "let's go out NYE and drink til we projectile vomit!" and "let's watch FOOBAW and drink til we projectile vomit!" Maybe the NC$$ can start underwriting puke cleaning crews at TGIF and Applebee's in exchange for some of the gate. It can become a new American tradition: "The New Year's Eve College Football Pukeathon at Beef 'O' Brady’s."

Agreed there's a lot of overlap there. And the Technicolor Yodelers will probably seamlessly incorporate the foobaw into their evening. Could even result in a modest reduction in vomit production should one or both of the games prove to be a sufficiently compelling.

But I still say that the total population of NYE celebrants includes a large "family time" group, and a large "mating game" group. If this NYE is business as usual for them, that will pull many otherwise interested viewers away from their TV sets.
