Re: College Football 2010: Dude, Where's my Conference?

True that! Simon Fraser is playing in the GNAC this fall, something I'm sure we'll go over a few times in the D2 football thread this fall.

Re: College Football 2010: Dude, Where's my Conference?

Actually, I'm starting to think that it might be a better deal for the SEC to bring in Texas A&M and Baylor. That would give the SEC more of a foothold in recuiting Texas, and it keeps Baylor a major player in Texas, helping to make it harder for schools like Texas and a&m to recuit their own state. And would give the SEC more eyeballs watching them in Texas.

Plus, if you're more of an also ran in the SEC, it works because you're not bringing in another fanatical fan base of football fans, but a school that should improve them in other sports. Plus, right now Baylor is scared ****less about all that's going on and for them to get a life line from the SEC, hell, they're not going to mind too much if your team cheats a little.

Re: College Football 2010: Dude, Where's my Conference?

Texas A & M is generally in first place when it comes to the smallest number of states represented on a roster. There have been a couple of years where the number is two: Texas and Louisiana.

For many years A & M had a deal with LSU which called for the Aggies to play in Baton Rouge EVERY year. However, I was in Tiger Stadium the night Emery Bellard brought his wish bone offense and a 260 pound freshman fullback named George Woodard to town and smacked the dog snot out of LSU.

I think it's unlikely the Aggies will wind up in the SEC unless they can get some assurances about the game with Texas, and even then I think it's a longshot.

But, if the Aggies do wind up in the SEC,it will help their recruiting. . .in Louisiana. But not necessarily at the expense of LSU. More likely at the expense of the other D-I programs in Louisiana.

Short of a major scandal, I don't see anything loosening Texas' grip on most of the most desireable recruits in Texas.

Re: College Football 2010: Dude, Where's my Conference?

From what I have read, the Aggies are very real about joining the SEC if they can play Texas every season. If the SEC were to add a team, Im sure they'd go for one more for an even number, most likely VA Tech or maybe even Miami.

If I were SEC commissioner, there's no way I would take Va Tech over Miami. Sure, Va Tech has had the stronger program recently, but you'll get a massive ratings and revenue boost by adding Miami (the city) to the SEC footprint. The booming metropolis of Blacksburg? Well, not so much...

Miami is a pretty small school for the SEC and has relatively modest attendance, but I think that would change once they started having conference games with the likes of Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, etc. This article points out the attendance bumps Miami already got when playing Florida and Tennessee. But of course, the real key is the TV ratings, and Blacksburg just can't compete in that area.

How about all of DC and NoVa? The Hokies bring that, too.

Well, you would certainly know better than I, but I've assumed that DC was UMD/UVA territory (not to mention Redskins/Wizards/Nationals/Capitals). With all that local competition, do the DC sports masses really follow a team 4.5 hours away all that closely?

When VT is good, maybe they get some attention, but UVA still has the edge by default, and UMD recent success in basketball and even the winning seasons in football gives them a little bit of headway too.

Re: College Football 2010: Dude, Where's my Conference?

Lets talk B10 Championship game... :)

Naturally, here in SE MI, they all think Ford Field is the best choice, and while the facility is good, IMHO, the B10 needs to be unique.

Lets have the December championship game OUTSIDE!

Soldier Field.

None of this pansy climate controlled championship stuff.

(this coming from an Idaho Vandal Marching Band member who played outdoors probably only 4-5 times over the course of 5 seasons... )

First of all, if we expand the topic to include the pros, then this whole area belongs to the Redskins, forever.

But if we're just talking college, there's immense support for Tech because they've been winning for a decade. NoVa is dotted with IT and engineering firms and you can't swing a dead terrapin without hitting an alumnus. The Hokies have also played at FedEx a couple times to stir the pot.

UVa is far from DC and doesn't have much of a "home team" feel in the WMA -- though ostensibly the "state university" it's a pretty elite place, it's more William & Mary than West Virginia. Maryland certainly dominates eastern MD, but they have the long ACC history and they really belong in that conference. Navy also has a fair amount of local area interest though of course their admission requirements mean they could never compete.

VaTech has been the king at least for the 6 years I have lived here. Also, DC is one of those cities (NY, Chicago) with a truly cosmopolitan mix of alumni, so a B10 beachhead here would come with ready-made "visitor" interest.

well at least UT knows now.... "hello pac 10!!"

(AP) - Today, monday, the PAC 10 reached a deal to hold their newly created PAC10 Football Conference Championship Game in the new Cowboys Stadium located in Arlington TX.

:D

And honestly, they're all over the place. My work has a ton of people from Michigan. There's a ton of Penn State around the area... and then you get the rest in some degree or another around the city. Its definitely an ACC/B10 split around here.

Here is the University of Texas proposal for Pac10 alignment:

West:
Washington
WSU
Oregon
OSU
Cal
Stanford
USC
UCLA
AZ
ASU
Texas Tech
A&M
Colorado

East:
Texas
Baylor

:D

Winner of each division will play in the conference championship game.

VT is also a much larger school than UVA in terms of student enrollment - I want to say their undergrad enrollment in nearly double that of UVA.

Re: College Football 2010: Dude, Where's my Conference?

Conflicting reports. Texas may have been convinced to stay in the Big 12 (Big 10? Whatever they are now) instead of leading the charge to the Pac-10 (Pac-11, Pac-whatever) which would mean the other mass exodus of team would stop. It would be interesting if conference expansion stops here...

One GUY, this Chip Brown guy from orangebloods.net or something like that, has said that Texas is staying. One source. A source that's been wrong quite frequently before.
