College Football 2009: Bowl College Stupidity Rankings

Re: College Football 2009: Bowl College Stupidity Rankings

There are 34 bowl games accounting for (obviously) 68 teams which is better than half of all D-IA schools that play. When better than half the teams are getting bonus money at the end of the year for playing an extra game, you can understand why a lot of schools would be pretty ticked off, especially since most bowl games have tie-ins with conferences to guarantee their members a payout.

The system is crooked and broken.
Well, there's nothing stopping the other 60 teams from playing their bowl games even if the top 8 teams (define however you'd like!) were in a playoff. The reason it won't happen is because the powers that be are afraid that even fewer people would care about the Wank Bowl if there were a playoff going on, too. And they're probably right. The playoffs would siphon off the attention of all the sports networks, leaving less coverage for the remaining bowl games.

What he said.

Also consider that the current system allows 34 teams to end the season with a win. The resulting good feelings may result in an uptick in contributions from boosters, merchandise sold, and so on.

Objectively, qualifying for an 8 team playoff and losing in the first round is much more impressive than being champions of a third tier bowl. But winning means the $$ flow; losing slows the flow.

Why would people care less about those bowls than they do now? No one in those bowls thinks their team is in contention, it's just an excuse to watch them play one more game and that would be the same playoff or no playoff. Just because there's only one playoff game now (the championship) doesn't mean no one goes to the other bowls (not that they sell out either, but my point being there would be little change). Now, if they're on at the exact same time as a playoff game, that would affect it, but if not I think difference would be minimal.

Eh, to even get into an eight team playoff you likely finished with at most three losses and 6 of these teams (in a lot of systems) would've won their conference championship. Plenty of success in such a season for booster wallets to stay open.

Re: College Football 2009: Bowl College Stupidity Rankings

Of course, the other big thing holding back a playoff is that it's *very* likely that the playoff would fall into the hands of the NCAA itself rather then the BCS conferences. If it were to pop into existence tomorrow, the cash would be split among all 11 conferences, possibly Notre Dame as well for 12, and by NCAA by-law (Alton would know this for sure) it could be a minimum of a 24 team playoff.

Agreed.

I'll admit to being more familiar with merchandise sales than booster wallets.;)

But this much I know. When a bowl game is lost, merchandise sales grind to a halt -- no matter how honorable the defeat. When a bowl game is won, especially a major bowl, buyers will empty the shelves.

Do boosters, as a group, take a more level-headed approach? I'm sure that some do. But I'm still guessing that the bowl result does make a difference in terms of the overall $$ contributed -- even if a majority of the donors give the same $$ no matter what.

Perception also matters. If decisionmakers genuinely believe that a playoff will cause contributions to drop, they'll drag their feet. Whether the belief has merit or not is actually a separate issue.

Please don't get me wrong. I'm strongly in favor of a playoff system. I'm just trying to understand why the traditional bowls and the BCS are so entrenched.

So, wait, USF was ranked?

I think RU's season could've gone a lot better if they hadn't opened with that thrashing by Cincy.

Well considering I just donated a cool 100 dollars to my school's athletic program, I feel quite qualified to speak about how us high powered boosters operate:cool: :p

What about merchandise sales leading up to a bowl game? Would it be possible a playoff appearance will so increase the fervor of the fan base that it would offset the loss of merchandise sales for some of the losing teams? I don't know. Ultimately you're right, the fear of the unknown for the BCS, major college programs, and others outweighs the potentially (I think likely) greater revenue a playoff could bring.

Details are still forthcoming, but it sure looks like three Tennessee players tried to hold up a store near campus using a pellet gun. Brilliant.

There's also a good chance that at least one was wearing Tennessee apparel.

I think I'd be more stoked to have lost a playoff game than to have won the Humpty Dumpty Bowl. At least in the playoff, you had a shot at actually winning something meaningful, as you were three games away from winning the national title. And the prestige of being one of the 8 (or whatever number) top teams selected to me would be more important than winning some bowl.

On the Tennessee players, I wonder if they'll get suspended for a half? :D

The victim has reportedly said he doesn't want them to miss a game...

Hey, no one got hurt, right?

If you lived down there, you would understand this...

I was talking with a producer for a local sports radio station down in Knoxville, and the subject of East TN obsessing over UT came up... Apparently one of the radio hosts had a major problem with the fans altering his show... When the host wanted to talk about a particular national sporting event, about 1/2 the callers kept diverging from the national topic and wanted to talk about UT basketball, football recruiting, and Lane Kiffin... The host would try and steer the callers away from UT towards the National Event, but every time, UT would come right back up a few callers later...

Want to know the event that was playing 2nd fiddle to UT Sports? Superbowl 43....

It's a whole different culture down there when it comes to college sports...

Your opinion doesn't count, you're knowledgeable and objective.:p ;)

Maybe I'm too pessimistic about the typical football fan. But for about 75% of the people in the stands, it boils down to two possibilities:

We won? We rule!

We lost? Let me go hide.

In the we rule mode, the $$ flow.
