Re: College Footbal 2009: Anybody want to be in the Top 5?
I can think of at least one other possibility for ranking weirdness. I don't think it'll happen, because if there's one thing VaTech is consistent at, it's being inconsistent....but the possibility of them running the table the rest of the way isn't far-fetched. They basically have 3 games left (BC, GT, UNC), and 2 of 'em are at home. Does a one-loss ACC team really get vaulted over a one-loss Texas, USC, or Florida? Really?
I almost hope it happens, if only to get voters to take a hard look at this notion that when you get your loss serves as an informal tiebreaker (early losses beat late ones). That's always struck me as arbitrary. It was a good idea to remove the "last 16" part of pairwise in hockey, and I think it'd be a good idea to make less of a big deal about when losses happen in football.
I wonder if this scenario would be even more damaging to the BCS than a BSU title game appearance. At this point the ACC, Big East, and everybody in the Pac 10 not named USC have to wonder if their is a second heirarchy getting firmly entrenched in the BCS system. If Oregon and Boston College worry about going 12-0 and still getting Utah'd, the house of cards may come tumbling down. Maybe.
