Re: College Footbal 2009: Anybody want to be in the Top 5?

I really expected Tebow to be in the hospital over the weekend before his nurse, Mary, found his bed empty when she came into work on Monday. Kind of surprising.
The only problem with that story is that Tebow isn't Jewish. ;) :D

Re: College Footbal 2009: Anybody want to be in the Top 5?

God, Boise State's already up to #5 and don't play anyone for the rest of the season. Hopefully Oregon can go 9-3 or so and boost them enough in the computers to cause havoc if they run the table. 3 or 4 of the teams ahead of them are going to lose a game along the way and even if the computers screw them, a human ranked 1 or 2 team missing the BCS title game would make me giggle. Boise playing in Pasedena on the 7th would make me laugh even more.

That is the one thing that could burn this mother down. Of course somebody would have to take care of Texas, and no one in the rest of the Big 12 looks up to the task.

Look out for Cinci as another dark horse that might just go undefeated.

I think Oklahoma can knock off Texas, as long as Bradford is healthy.

Or Florida. They haven't looked as good as last year (and we'll see how long Tebow is out), and they lost a game last year. I think the title game could just as easily be Texas-BSU as it could be Florida-BSU.

But they don't have anywhere near the cache (nor actual resume) of BSU, so if they're both undefeated, BSU would be the one to go.

What I've heard is that Florida's having the same trouble replacing Percy Harvin that USC has had replacing Reggie Bush, ie: Not replaceable. Seeing Harvin in the NFL, that's easily believable.

I agree, but something tells me the voters might see BCS/non-BCS as an overriding distinction if it comes down to picking a title game participant. But either way, the powers that be would be clinching their teeth if that was the choice.

I'm basically pencilling in UF or Bama in the title game at this point in the season.

Well, it certainly will give the windbags on TV something to spew about if Texas is undefeated, the SEC champ has a loss, and BSU and Cincy are undefeated... I can only imagine the vitriol - no matter who got picked.

Playoffs now!

I expect to see people jumping past Boise State just like Utah last year at this point, really. Ohio State beats Penn State and slides back past Boise with their 1 loss and so on.

Re: College Footbal 2009: Anybody want to be in the Top 5?

What happens if Florida, Alabama and Texas all manage to lose a game and BSU, Cincy and Iowa are undefeated? This type of situation is what it will take to get rid of the BCS.

It will work itself out.

For one, I don't think the computers will be too kind to Boise or Cincy.

Two, as we saw a few years back when Michigan and Ohio State were 1/2 going into their rivalry game, the voters will manipulate their votes in the final poll to get the outcome they want, rather than honestly rank the teams as they see fit.

Anyway, no real point in discussing it now. There's lots of time for upsets.

Yeah, Brian Kelly has really turned that program around. :D

Probably right, Its hard not to find a college fan somewhere that didn't absolutely love the play-calling in their bowl game against Oklahoma. Statue of Liberty for the WIN!!!:D Well, minus most of Oklahoma anyways. Cincy just isn't that big of a football brand just yet. But having the Bearcats getting screwed out of the big dance and being able to have the argument that they should be in the BCS Bowl instead of say the Fiesta Bowl would be a big help for them.

Well, it certainly will give the windbags on TV something to spew about if Texas is undefeated, the SEC champ has a loss, and BSU and Cincy are undefeated... I can only imagine the vitriol - no matter who got picked.

Actually, Boise State and Cincinnati would make for a pretty intriguing bowl match up. But yeah, PLAYOFFS would help make for a whole lot more interesting match ups.

Iowa and Cincy play for the title BSU and all other are SOL.

I don't think we can dismiss so easily the possibility that the voters, who hold a practically veto-proof majority, would leave out an undefeated Big 10 champ (not named Michigan, OSU, or PSU) instead of a 1-loss SEC or Big 12 champ. Yes, I think the Big 10's reputation is that tarnished.

I'm not saying it's right or that that's how I'd vote, but I could see it happening.

Edit: oops - had it backwards. I think the voters might LEAVE OUT the undefeated B-10 champ...

True, Iowa's best hope in that case is that there would be both a Big XII and a SEC team, perhaps even USC back into the picture that has one loss that could be in theory, voted into the BCS Bowl and have them split the votes and letting Iowa slide in perhaps. But there's a lot of football to be played yet for that to happen.

I'm almost sure an undefeated Iowa team that beat Penn State, Ohio State and Michigan will get a BCS title game before any Big East team, a Florida team that lost to anybody on their schedule outside of the SEC championship game, a Texas team that lost to anybody on their schedule outisde of Oklahoma (at which point I think Oklahoma takes the division). I think the only school in that top group that can lose a game and justify it would probably be Alabama that actually has a couple of hard games on it schedule.

Ultimately I'm almost sure Iowa gets into the title game before Cincy does at the very least.

Re: College Footbal 2009: Anybody want to be in the Top 5?

Stanford gets 2 votes in the AP poll and 20 in the USA Today poll. Let me be the first to say how dumb that is, yes we beat a ranked team but that team in no way deserved to be ranked. On the other hand, great turnaround of the program for Harbaugh.

I wonder if this scenario would be even more damaging to the BCS than a BSU title game appearance. At this point the ACC, Big East, and everybody in the Pac 10 not named USC have to wonder if their is a second heirarchy getting firmly entrenched in the BCS system. If Oregon and Boston College worry about going 12-0 and still getting Utah'd, the house of cards may come tumbling down. Maybe.

If it makes you feel better, I agree:p

Of course, I would've ejected Cal from the Top 25 as well.
