College Footbal 2009: Anybody want to be in the Top 5?

Re: College Footbal 2009: Anybody want to be in the Top 5?

Notre Dame will never stop playing Navy. In short - they owe them, big time.

During WWII ND was in the pits financially. Navy used ND as one of its training centers and the $$ the USN paid ND kept them afloat until the War was over and the GI Bill took over.

Im well aware of the history (born and raised a ND fan). But I dont see ND adding a D-1AA team just because of history. They have played for what like 60 years straight now. I dont think they owe them much more. Plus ND could probably afford to just pay Navy back if need be. But its probably a moot point. I dont see Navy going down a level anytime soon.

Re: College Footbal 2009: Anybody want to be in the Top 5?

Oops- sorry about the Cin example.... Insert a better example, since it's hypothetical anyway. My bad.

Still, how is it not possible to have Bozo State and Utah be undefeated and in the top 2? It's happened before. And it's still possibe that they be 1-2 if Florida looses twice- since a two loss team in the top 5 still happens.

It's stupid that ONLY one non BSC conference can get in for a given season. Especially since the top MW and WAC teams are trying harder to have tough OC schedules to make up for the weak conferences. At least they are trying to be credible. Having Florida and Texas play patsy's is embarassing. I think that takes WAY too much away from college football. I hate OU, OSU, ND, and USC, but bless them for having tough schedules.

I'm ok with ONE interstate game, to help your state. But more than one is bad, if they are not D1A schools.
Actually, you might not be all that far off with saying Cincinatti would get bumped in favor of the Irish. If I recall correctly, ND gets the Big East's bid if they finish 9-2 or better.

The likelier (10% chance vs 0%) scenario for Notre Dame would be the service academies dropping to 1-AA.

As an Irish fan of 30+ seasons, I perceive a huge net pro-Notre Dame bias throughout the media. There's also a far smaller but still significant number of people with megaphones with an insanity-level hatred of Notre Dame. Basically, we're the Red Sox.

USC is the Yankees. The percentages are reversed, but again, few are neutral.

If the service acadamies were ever to drop I wonder if Notre Dame would stop playing them. Frankly it wouldnt suprise me if they did. Heck with tradition.

Actually, I have heard talk of Army and Navy dropping down to D1-AA. Most of the rumors have been them going to the Ivy League, which would be a pretty good deal for all teams involved. With all of the requirements there are for Army and Navy, one of the worst ones they have is that simply put, they can't have 300+ linemen there. Heck, Navy's modern area most famous athlete, David Robinson, only got into the Naval Acadamy because he was just under the hight restrictions and then had a growth spurt while at Annapolis, thus he got the cushy deal where the Navy made him serve as a recuiter while he got to be in the NBA. Sad to say it, but Navy and Army just won't ever get the bodies they would need to stand toe to toe with the Florida's, Texas's and USC's of today's game. Air Force probably can get away with it because their physical restrictions are not as strict I believe.

So what?

Even teams that are trying to stand toe to toe with the Floridas of the world won't get the bodies to do so.

Navy and Air Force have shown that they can compete just fine without players trying to go to the NFL.

Under the new BCS arrangement Notre Dame will be guaranteed one of the at-large slots in a BCS bowl if it is ranked No. 8 or better in the final BCS standings. It is also guaranteed annual payment for its participation in the BCS. In those seasons in which the Irish play in a BCS bowl game, the school will receive $4.5 million (an amount equivalent to that received by a conference that places a second team in a BCS bowl). In those seasons in which Notre Dame does not play in a BCS bowl game, it is projected to be paid $1.3 million for its participation in the BCS arrangement.

If the Irish finish 9-3 or better, and are in the top 14 in the final BCS, then they are BCS-eligible.

There is nothing in the new contract that says they will take the Big East's spot. The 9-2 record you cited would indicate it was an older provision, possibly in an older contract.

Good deal? Were you beaten up by your 10-year older 300 lb sibling a lot as a child? 'Cause that's what it would be like if Army/Navy ever played an Ivy League team. Have you ever seen an Ivy football game? They're only I-AA because there isn't a I-AAAAA. I honestly believe my high school football team (38-2 during my 4 years of high school) could give Cornell a good game. The Ivy presidents don't keep them out of the I-AA postseason due to their concern about academic integrity - it's for their own protection!

Cincinnati.

Your spelling of the queen city reminds me of beer. Natty Ice! :p

The monster Penn teams of the 80's could probably have played with the service academies, but point taken, big time. The average cadet or midshipman student is a better athlete than the average Ivy football player. Tougher, too.

There's also been no tradition of Ivy-service academy football since the 40's (about the last time either was a credible competitor for the national title, not surprisingly). About all they have in common is academic standards and geography, but if those are the criteria, admit Middlebury and Swarthmore. The Ivies are about equidistant in football skill between them and the academies.

Not to mention Smith and Wellsley... ;)

You might be conflating ND's BCS arrangement, which is independent of the Big East, with our arrangement for the Gator Bowl (and maybe one other bowl), where subject to certain restrictions on our record (something like having no more than one or two more losses than the Big East team), the bowl can choose us in place of the Big East team that would normally take one of the slots.

Re: College Footbal 2009: Anybody want to be in the Top 5?

Watching FSU now isn't even stressful, it's more of a joke at this point.

19 yards per completion...for the season. Jesus.

Re: College Footbal 2009: Anybody want to be in the Top 5?

9 penalties in a half coming off of a bye week.

Geez, Bobby, I can't imagine why people are unhappy with the job you and your staff are doing.

Re: College Footbal 2009: Anybody want to be in the Top 5?

Jeez, keep railing on them. It seems to be doing the trick. :D

Re: College Footbal 2009: Anybody want to be in the Top 5?

Wow Carolina. Way to suck.

Even an early 2000's defense would have FSU as a top 10 team. Sigh.

Edit: Submitted as proof of that opinion

Last two games for Christian Ponder
59/70 755 yards 8 tds 0 picks.

Season to date

180/257 2176 yds, 12 tds, 1 int.

Well yeah. Some of those players are in the NFL now and would have no problem with college kids.

Re: College Footbal 2009: Anybody want to be in the Top 5?

Worst replay ever.

Dude, assuming (incorrectly) it was me that gave you neg rep and neg repping me back in spite??? Tsk, tsk.

I have given out a handful and believe I've signed them all...but just ask...I would have told you it wasn't me (or told you if it was). ;)

You know, our first battle was over my contention that Pat Burrell was a mediocre (at best) left fielder while you defended him. I think I can declare victory on that one in light of your recent transgression.:p

Re: College Footbal 2009: Anybody want to be in the Top 5?

I clearly over estimated the ability of Pat Burrell to hit against anyone besides the Mets.

Sorry for the neg rep that wasn't deserved. If the a-hole who pinged me would just be a man and sign it, this wouldn't happen.

Re: College Footbal 2009: Anybody want to be in the Top 5?

Retaliatory neg-repping is just absurd. Any time someone does it to me, I just feel like it validates my original decision to hand out a negative (which happens a lot more frequently on BigSoccer than it does here).

I thought all neg rep came from Rimbaud.
