Re: College Footbal 2009: Anybody want to be in the Top 5?

Looked like he never went out of bounds. TD upheld on review.

GT up 27-16.

Edit: 28-16 after the PAT.

Beamer should never have kicked the ball back.

Re: College Footbal 2009: Anybody want to be in the Top 5?

Hold everything AmherstBlackBear, I think VT has a chance. That GT guy needed to get off the field, now he forced his team to use a TO and stopped the clock.

Re: College Footbal 2009: Anybody want to be in the Top 5?

Well, there's some prevent defense par excellence.

If Taylor looks like Colt McCoy, there's a problem.

Re: College Footbal 2009: Anybody want to be in the Top 5?

Ok, now it's over.

Onside kick is well done, but GT recovers.

Edit: GT wins 28-23 over VT. That's the end of VT's NC hopes.

Re: College Footbal 2009: Anybody want to be in the Top 5?

Stanford leads Arizona 28-20 at the half. Good quarter on offense for Stanford, scoring both times.

Re: College Footbal 2009: Anybody want to be in the Top 5?

Two awful plays even with a second chance.

Yep.

I knew there'd be some very special panty bunching with the way it ended, but the calls down the stretch were a lot better than the calls in the first three quarters, which all went the Trojans' way.

The Irish had their chances, and they did not succeed. Charlie and Jimmy were in the position that countless winners have been in. That's the bottom line.

Arizona gets some scores but Stanford answers each time, Stanford leads 38-29 after 3.

Re: College Footbal 2009: Anybody want to be in the Top 5?

Alabama only up 7 on SC in the 3rd qtr.

Looks like a week of ugly wins for the front runners. Except Tech, who chose instead to lose ugly.

Arizona showing some fight up 43-38 in Tuscon and Auburn is in trouble, down 21-14 with two minutes to play against Kentucky.

Re: College Footbal 2009: Anybody want to be in the Top 5?

So I DVR'ed the ND-USC game because UNH had a game tonight, and I just finished watching the game now.

My thoughts:

- Notre Dame isn't a national title contender this year, for obvious reasons. But they are back in the national picture. They are for real. If Clausen comes back for his senior year, they will be a very dangerous team.

- For once the Irish didn't get totally screwed by the refs...or rather, they weren't the ONLY team getting screwed by the refs. It was equally distributed.

- Hats off to USC. You got the Irish again this year, but next year will not be so easy. They can open up holes for the running game, but this O-Line needs to protect better. One extra year should do the trick.

Re: College Footbal 2009: Anybody want to be in the Top 5?

Here's the problem for that one extra year. 4 of the 5 starters, according to NBC, are seniors. Now, unless they can come back as 5th year seniors, they're not going to be here for that extra year.

You thinks the refs make a habit of screwing Notre Dame? Really?

And if you think you'll beat next year's USC team in Los Angeles, your smoking some good stuff. Theres reason why in this 8 year running debacle the Irish have given USC a scare in South Bend, and only in South Bend. ND might have a shot in 2011, but projecting out that far is of course quite difficult.

I think we got enough screwing in the two games with Integer refs to last the whole season. We've had enough historical issues with Pac-10 refs for it to be understandable for ND fans to be pleasantly surprised when they called a relatively even game.

The refs weren't the problem yesterday...one factor: it is clear USC noticed that the ND safeties were too quick to commit to the run and decided that if ND was going to let 86 release off the line without so much as a tap on the shoulder then he'd be going full speed in one direction as the safety passed him going full speed in the other direction. There were many issues but letting that guy get 153 yards receiving was a slight problem.

If they don't bench Smith then they are going to really get torched in upcoming games...he is a clear liability in all phases of defense.

Couple of other things...when Parrish got hurt ND took way too long to get to the line and let 10 seconds run off the clock.

With the TO in hand, they could have run the ball 1x. For a team that has done that with no TO's (Purdue) it was worth one shot, they would have needed one block or one broken tackle. The quick pitch they ran early in the year came to mind, send everybody right and pitch to Allen going left...go out or call TO if it fails.

(here comes the big if) IF they kick the FG from the 27 and don't miss the PAT then a FG ties the game...I thought the no FG was a huge mistake.

While I was bemoaning the terrible call with 4 seconds left, (who throws a pass to the 2 with 4 seconds left?) my son is yelling "there should be 1 second left" ...I thought he was crazy until the replay come on...I think that was a legitimate call and the 1 second was indeed valid. Not that it helped.

Re: College Footbal 2009: Anybody want to be in the Top 5?

I thought with the TO Notre Dame should have tried to run once. No matter what 99.99 percent of the time you can get two plays off with 14 seconds. Sure Notre Dame ended up getting three, but you expect 2.

So why not run the ball with that bruising back once when USC has spread the field and try to run up the middle? Would have surprised USC for sure. Even if he doesn't make it, you call timeout and have one more play.

Stupid NBC announcers acted like ND couldn't run the ball anymore, well I guess Weis thought the same way.
