College Basketball 2012-2013: The Year of the Big Ten?

Re: College Basketball 2012-2013: The Year of the Big Ten?

What is major difference between men's and women's game? She hit both free throws to win game...after other girl hit two to take lead.

you notice when you sit at those ncaa games they use downtime to show highlights of past ncaa championships at the end of games, buzzer beaters.. stuff like that. well all the girls basketball 'highlights' are someone making a free throw, then a girl inbounds the ball and runs downcourt and --- misses. every one.

High quality image of Kevin Ware's leg. NOT SAFE FOR WORK, LUNCH, HUMANITY, OR PRETTY MUCH ANYTHING ELSE.

If this is real...mein Gott.
I saw one on Twitter last night. I'm sure not going to click that link at work. :p

The morning show this morning hadn't seen that picture, so they were doing 1-by-1 reactions to seeing it, over the radio. You can tell from the reaction exactly how horrifying the injury is.

Re: College Basketball 2012-2013: The Year of the Big Ten?

So far, there have been nine years in which the same Division I school had a men's team and a women's team reach the Final Four in the same season. Can Louisville make it ten on Tuesday night?

In the list below, if there is no parenthetical note, then both teams lost in the semi-finals.

1983 Georgia
1999 Duke (men lose to UConn in Final, women lose to Purdue in Final)
2002 Oklahoma (women lose to UConn in Final)
2003 Texas
2004 UConn (only Div I school to win both basketball titles in same year)
2005 Michigan State (women lose to Baylor in Final)
2006 LSU
2009 UConn (women win)
2011 UConn (men win)

2013??

PS I was a little annoyed by the announcers talking about "one of the greatest upsets in women's NCAA history." Uh, guys, it was a 5 seed beating a 1 seed.

The greatest upset in NCAA division I basketball, men's or women's, was 1989, when # 16 seed Harvard beat # 1 seed Stanford.

Yes but in women's basketball, upsets don't usually happen. And Baykor was.. well.. Baylor. It's a big upset, but not te biggest.

That Stanford team had two or three of its best players injured, which kind of lessens the separation between the teams.

When the UConn women's team is "on" they remind me more than anything else of the 1985 Bears: it's always a contest to see who will score more, the offense or the defense.

They dismantled a very good Kentucky team tonight. The game was close for the first ten minutes*, then BOOM, 17 - 0 later, Kentucky hits a three, then 8 - 0 later it's halftime, and the game is pretty much over.

I think during that entire 17 - 0 run UConn ran maybe three possessions from their half-court offense, the rest were either steals converted to layups or a rebound turned into a fast-break layup. At one point the announcers said out of 28 baskets, 25 were "in the paint" but really it was about 1/3 steals, 1/3 fast breaks on missed shots, and 1/3 in half-court offense.

It would be ironic if the women's final were to be UConn vs Tennessee...again.

Even scarier, Elena Delle Donne, the belle of Delaware, had been at UConn but transferred out; and Kentucky's best defender, Samari Walker, had been at UConn but transferred out. Partly because of those transfers, and because of graduation, this was "supposed" to be a rebuilding year for UConn, but all of a sudden, their first-year players have started to gel.

* 23-22 Kentucky with 9 minutes left in the half. then 25-3 UConn the rest of the half.

The uconn nd matchup will be another classic.

I think the Delaware player was the best I've seen since her supporting cast was so weak. Teams put all their attention on her and she averaged 30 points. Louisville put their attention on Griner and she scored 14, most of which were over the back rebounds and put backs.

I'm a huge fan of Delle Donne. She's actually a better volleyball player than a basketball player.

Re: College Basketball 2012-2013: The Year of the Big Ten?

Rutgers fires HC Rice, which I agree with. Pac12 says Rush ok to offer bounty on coach, which I disagree with. The Rice thing is an easy decision but it also is a 1 guy, temporal thing. The Pac12 officiating issue impacts every game for as long as Rush is supervising officials. I actually thought Rush would be the first to see the firing line...and would have pointed out how the integrity of THE GAME, somehow sadly overshadowed Rice's treatment of individuals.

Kudos to Rutgers for getting it right the second time. Shame on Pac12 for allowing every fan, writer, coach and player to question the motivation for every game deciding call. It is one thing to whine about refs with an agenda after a loss, quite another when there is an example that is condoned by the league.

Re: College Basketball 2012-2013: The Year of the Big Ten?

Nice conclusion to the Big East basketball league as we knew it.

Three of four teams in women's Final Four from Big East; Louisville in men's Final Four.

Dammed football! Not only did football conference affiliations screw up men's Division I ice hockey, they ruined what had been one of the best basketball conferences ever as well.

At least the non-football schools get to keep the Big East name and the tournament in MSG. But no UConn, no Syracuse, no more of those classics from history like a 6 overtime game in the conference tourney or a magic run to the Finals sparked by Kemba or Carmelo.

PS Kudos to Louisville, the tenth time a school has had a team reach the Final Four in both basketball tournaments in the same year (the seventh school to do so). Can they become the second team to win both in the same year as well?

Re: College Basketball 2012-2013: The Year of the Big Ten?

Sounds like the Goofs are going to hire Richard Pitino (Rick's son) as their new head coach.

I'd give a year's salary to see him ask for Ryan Saunders as an assistant.

I'd say winner of ND-UConn is going to win the final but perhaps they will be spent from what figures to be a battle in the semis. 3 games, 1 multi OT, a 1 ponter and a 2 pointer. ND has lost last two finals and doesn't want to be denied. I think ND or UConn is just that much deeper and will wear the Cardinals out...Baylor wasn't very deep. Can't speak for TN, don't know their status with the new coach but you have to figure they had more horses than Louisville, yet they sit at home.

If you go with experience, especially in the backcourt...ND has been to the finals 2 years in a row and has the best point guard in the country...you'd think that would help but Louisville is bucking that trend
