Re: Colgate @ RPI (ECAC Playoffs) March 4,5...
I did not get a chance to listen either, however I would guess that one could fairly easily predict his response...
'Colgate is playing really well right now and they are a tough team to play at this time of the season. They have nothing to lose and everything to gain, so that we expect them go be very difficult to beat.
'That being said, we are glad to have all our players healthy and ready to go. As long as we play good defense and put the puck in the net more times than they do, we'll be fine.'
Well, I did listen, and I heard two interesting things that I liked....and one thing I did not expect ("that we really have to get physical with them; try to rattle their freshmen goalie with lots of action in front of him; and take the whole team out of their game with our physical play." He repeated the "physical play" twice more during the interview.). He also said that "if we limit the other team to one or two goals, we should win." (at least he did not say, "if we shut them out we cannot lose").
First thing I liked, Coach said, "if we play our game, we can beat any team in the country." He sounded real matter-of-fact about it, mentioned particular games.
Second, he said that it is not RPI's game to outshoot the opponent; instead, RPI wants to play good defense and get good quality shots.
I'm not nearly as familiar with hockey tactics as with soccer tactics, but he sounded a little like Jose Mourinho almost; play good defense, let them tire themselves out trying to score, then be lethal on the counter-attack.
He also said that York was ill last weekend and that if he were a freshman or sophomore he might not have let him play.
At the very least I hope everyone on the team is over the flu and back at full strength!
I hope RPI wins this weekend, if only to avenge last year's first-round disappointment.
