Colgate and Starr's last season

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

Most of those midwest schools aren't terribly keen on traveling to upstate New York, especially those in the B1G and some in the NCHC. The WCHA/NCHC schools that have been on the schedule over the last 10 years or so have been as part of home-and-home agreements - St. Cloud State, Omaha, Miami, Bowling Green, Lake Superior State. Colgate was just recently at the Mariucci Classic at the University of Minnesota. Recent trips in the last 10 years also have included Wisconsin (Badger Showdown), Colorado College/Denver and Michigan State.

There's only so many teams and so many OOC weeks to go around.

'Gate has participated in its fair share of respected tournaments - not that I could witness any of them locally as the host school, unfortunately. Could a new arena change that? Probably not. Some years, Colgate's OOC schedules are obviously more appealing than others. Regardless, we need to win them because in the end, we all potentially play each other in one way, shape or form through common opponents or H2H in the PWR.

Cornell plays at MSG and in the Florida College Classic since 2003, where I assume they are the host. And just how does a school get to host an annual tournament? Potential revenue? And in Florida, of all places.

Only trouble with tournaments is that the host is on the hook for bringing in three other teams and fan bases simultaneously, and attendance isn't usually all that good for games the home team is not involved in, plus unless you schedule it as such like Notre Dame does, there's no guarantee when the teams play, which also can hurt attendance, and therefore revenue. I'm guessing Colgate probably won't be hosting the Icebreaker any time soon, and that's really the only "travelling" tournament.

BTW, in response to a question someone else had, the games against Arizona State (not the trip to Arizona) and UMASS Lowell will be played at Dartmouth's holiday tournament. It will be a "Classic" format with pre-arranged match-ups so Colgate will not face off with Dartmouth in an OOC game.

One other thing to consider about the western schools is that their travel budgets are already large as it is, hence why they don't travel much. Obviously the Big Mistake is a horse of a different colour, because they think their name recognition alone allows them to be able to get just home NC games, and they decide they'll pay the school a fee to come in for a one-and-done match. It can also help if staff members have pre-existing relationships with people at other schools. Ken Ralph, AD at Colorado College, was formerly at RPI, so you'll see the Tigers play a lot of ECAC schools. That's also how UVM had played SLU and Dartmouth a lot in NC play. Not sure what relationships staff members at Colgate have, and if that could precipitate some series.

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

Kyle Baun just re-upped with the Blackhawks for two more years on a one-way contract worth $600,000 next year and $650,000 the following year. It's clear Chicago sees something in him as they gave him a one way deal. In light of that it's easy to see why he turned pro early.

Not so sure if Ryan Johnston made a similarly wise choice.

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

Northeastern and Vermont doing damage in HE tournament and Dartmouth moving on....do these outcomes make this year sting less? I don't know but I'm definitely continuing to dig for positives wishing Gate was still playing.

Though Kyle's departure was expected, we could have used him this season.

Vermont forced a Game 3 vs. BC. If they lose this afternoon, their season's over. But Northeastern and Dartmouth sweeping Notre Dame and Yale (both on the road) does take away some of the sting from this season, at least in my opinion.

I stated way back on this thread - when the Green played 'Gate in Hammy - that they are a slippery, snarky team. You could look it up, as Casey said. Think I'll ride the Big Green all the way to the championship in LP. :)

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

Wish Vermont could have pulled off the upset.

Yale is very likely in the NCAAs without making their own conference tournament. A closer look at their 19-8-4 record: I know there are common opponents across conferences, but does this look like a PWR of 10?! Wow.

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

MURPHY signed with someone in the ECHL I saw a few days ago.

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

Kevin Lough signed with Adirondack and Darcy Murphy signed with Elmira. Mike is with Binghamton.....Congratulations to him on his first professional goal!!! Congratulations to Kevin and Darcy on their professional contracts!! It will be interesting to see where the Spinks will go. Go 'Gate!! BTW, I'm with ColSkate and will be rooting for Dartmouth to go all the way in LP.

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

Just read that Darcy scored his first professional goal against Adirondack on 3/11. Way to go, Darcy!!

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

I saw Spiro play for Rochester in the A against the Utica Comets, thought he fit in very well.

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

Does anyone know if the LP games will be televised/streamed/etc? I believe the Dartmouth game is at 4:06 on Friday?

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

I guess we can't watch the semis....good work ECAC.....great branding.

I dunno, but it looks like you can watch any of the 3 games through Boxcast on the ECAC website for $9.95. Thanks ECAC.....way to get more fans/kids to switch to college hockey from squeekball :(

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

There's always the Utica Comets, colskate. They're always soldout but occasionally I can come up with an extra ticket.
NCAA's in Albany next weekend also, what's that, about an hour from you ?
