Colgate and Starr's last season

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

I'm going to watch the game on boxcast today, wonder who the announcers are, prob Dartmouth homers ?

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

HORRIBLE boxcast, couldn't get the stream, several phone calls and emails back and forth and I got to watch halfway thru the first. Lost my feed at the start of OT have been listening. Going to second OT now. I am very upset !!!!! Oh, they won't answer the phones anymore.

Same here. Locked up once a minute through the whole first period, then the feed ended right before the start of overtime. I plan to email to ask for a refund.

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

Maybe it was a blessing not to witness it
4-3 Dartmouth

Thank you, Seniors

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

Great effort against a pretty evenly matched team. I think Dartmouth's depth won out in the end. Good luck with the new barn.

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

:(

Really sad to see the season come to an early end. Then again, much of this season was an unmitigated disaster! Storm clouds loomed over this team when Ryan Johnston decided to suddenly jump ship last July. When we lost 9-7 to Mercyhurst in Game #2 of the season, the storm clouds just got darker, and they never went away. But this team never quit. However, there were times in the season where certain victories (see Nov. 14 vs. Cornell, and the Belfast tournament) would have provided a spark, only to lose in back-breaking fashion (Cornell) or put up a major clunker (Belfast). Not helping us was the extremely short bench that we had all season long. We only recruited the same number of bodies that came into the program 4 years prior - not accounting for two players that left school early. And while we're on that topic, while Kyle Baun's early departure was expected, it still hurt us at the forward position. Baun was a catalyst to the Spink twins' production, and he was missed this season. Andrew Black has been a non-factor after putting up good numbers in 2013-14. Derek Freeman returned for this weekend's playoff series, despite missing a LOT of time this season, and while it finally gave us four forward lines, it may have been too little, too late. That said, we put up a remarkable effort in the series against Dartmouth. Had we not had a short bench all season long, we might have won this game and advanced to the quarterfinals (and maybe beyond?).

Thank you to Kevin Lough, Darcy Murphy, Mike Borkowski, Tylor Spink, and Tyson Spink for four great years in Colgate hockey uniforms. All of you will be missed next year. The good news is that our next game will be in the new Class of 1965 Arena! I'll post what I know about next year's schedule in the coming days. Good Riddance, 2015-16 season.

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

Why is no one talking about the elephant in the room? Consider three points and answer one question:

1) Over the last decade Colgate is 28 games under .500.
2) The two seasons with the most losses in school history have both occurred in the last six years.
3) The current coaching staff has 0 NCAA tournament wins.

So, here is the question:

Is this good enough?

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

Before you start calling for Don's job, you really have to think about who you could get to come in here, and would they be any better. One stat you fail to mention is that since '04 Colgate has the most ECAC final four appearances. Now we haven't won any, but there is consistency there.

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

With the excitement of the new rink this will be a bittersweet ending for me kind of like losing an old friend. Built in 1959, my first peewee team in 1962, guestimating I've seen well over 500 games in my fifty plus years of watching Gate hockey. From Kollevol to Vaughan, remembering the students tearing down the chickenwire fence(no glass back then) after an OT win over Army in the mid 60's, from Bob Nilan going into the stands(Northeastern) and the game being called after he knocked out our captain with a suckerpunch. Terry Slater and our rise on the national scene, beating Lake Superior in two games at Starr in the NCAA quarterfinals with Gordie Howe in the pressbox, getting 3000 fans for Harvard, Clarkson or Cornell, shirtless students over the glass after knocking off #1 nationally ranked Harvard or Cornell. I could go on and on. Hoping to at least secure a #1-4 spot in the playoffs to retire Starr properly ! Maybe Silver Puck can get twenty or thirty of our best to come back for the ceremony.

The other thread mentioned much of what I would of covered, guessing he thought I was tardy. Hoping for a great year, the seniors are one of the best recruited classes ever, let's send them out on a high note.

Wonder who will replace Baun on the Spinks line, coach said there's a possibility it could be Racine. The frosh defensemen will be called on immediately to fill in the losses. Johnson left us high and dry as he wasn't expected to depart early, Baun was expected. This leaves us with only sixteen scholarships(of eighteen) so staying healthy is the key to our 2015-16 season.

Rather than rehash the just completed, disappointing season, which Rainman did wonderfully, it might be instructive to reread our Leader's comments from last September. Much of the season for me was bittersweet, as Shabby pointed out, with the retirement of Starr. While the '65 Arena offers much to be excited about, there will always be great memories of my days watching the teams in the "old barn." Hopefully we can expect a better start to next season and a more positive ending. Whatever the outcome in the future, there will always be a place in my heart for Starr Rink, warts and all. I know there are detractors out there, but I hope some of you feel the same way.

To quote shabby from post #1 of this thread:

Call me superstitious, but I think the fact that another poster started a "Colgate 2015-16" thread before this one (which shabby started) cursed us this season. Similarly, shabby didn't start the "Part 2" thread last season and it immediately resulted in the loss to Harvard (though to be fair, last year's "Part 1" thread auto-closed after our semifinal win over SLU, and shabby was in Lake Placid at the time).

We are a superstitious bunch, aren't we? I am happy to go with it as an explanation of the season.
Instead of placing blame for the results of this season on the Coach, let's ask ourselves if we do enough for the program? Are we donors to Silver Puck, the lifeline of the Program? Do you realize we still have the same budget for sticks as 20 years ago? Are we season ticket holders and/or attend games on a regular basis?
I am as disappointed in the outcome of the season as anyone else, maybe more. Instead of placing blame, let's reflect on watching first-class student athletes playing the game they love and giving us lots to cheer about from October to March. I can't say enough good things about the Seniors and I am SO sad to see their time wearing a Colgate sweater come to an end.
I look forward to next season and the Riggs Rink!! Go 'Gate!!

I completely agree with all of the great sentiments to the Seniors. This was an amazing group of guys. I'm eternally optimistic on what the new barn will bring to the recruiting efforts as well! Getting the bad taste of the season behind us, I too would like to see better support across the board and feel many times there are missed opportunities from the promotional side of the facility and team.

No-shows from the students isn't new but aside from changing that mind-set, there are many details within the athletic department's control. Low hanging fruit seems to be.....

- Ensuring the band is at every home game - or the big ones
- Sending communication out to ticket buyers - with the goal of converting them into Seasons buyers
- Having new rink renderings in the foyer of Starr for the last season (or at least when a great amount of hockey alums come for the final game.
- Hosting a "pick your seat" event to the above database of historic ticket buyers & alumni
- Community outreach to various hockey and non-hockey groups in surrounding Syracuse / Utica

I've participated in the jersey auctions and attend a handful of games (due to distance) each year. I'm looking forward to increasing my involvement to Saturday tickets in '16 and some level of Silver Puck. Can't wait to discover the bells and whistles that are in store at Riggs and choosing a good site line!

Go 'Gate

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

It will be a longer walk to the new rink on a cold snowy evening. I hope the students can ride a shuttle bus or something similar.

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

Since we're looking ahead to next season (and the new rink), I may as well post what I've pieced together of next year's schedule:

October 1 Army (Homecoming, first game at the new facility)

November 4 @Harvard
November 5 @Dartmouth
November 11 @Yale
November 12 @Brown
November 18 Princeton
November 19 Quinnipiac

January 13 @Quinnipiac (Colgate day!)
January 14 @Princeton
January 20 St. Lawrence
January 21 Clarkson
January 27 Dartmouth
January 28 Harvard
February 3 @RPI
February 4 @Union
February 10 Brown
February 11 Yale
February 17 @Clarkson
February 18 @St. Lawrence
February 24 Union
February 25 RPI

-Cornell dates TBD, but based on what I've researched, I would expect them to be December 2 (home) and December 3 (away). Ugh. I hate playing them early in the season. AGAIN.

Home non-conference games (dates TBD):
-BU
-UConn
-Maine (probably 2 games)

Away non-conference games (dates also TBD):
-Merrimack (2 games, most likely in October)
-Providence
-Arizona State (probably 2 games)

Neutral site non-conference games (wonder what this tournament will be):
-Arizona State
-UMass-Lowell

Re: Colgate and Starr's last season

Good work Rainman. Eleven home games so far - more than this year just with league games. Late November and all of December must be for OOC games. Hopefully we can bring in BU and maybe a couple of other major teams during that time..(I know someone posted the OOC games earlier, but I've forgotten which teams). Wonder were the Cornell games fit in?

Adding on to College_Hockey_Fan's post I always thought it might be a great idea to have a "Meet the Players" session. This could be scheduled well ahead of game time - maybe 5 PM or earlier, for a half hour? Silver Puck Members and season ticket holders would get priority to "meet, eat, and greet" the players informally. Would want to make sure this didn't interfere with pre-game preparations by the coaches and players, but it might work out a couple of times a season. It's all good PR, and the players would appreciate the love from the fans IMO.

So, we (potentially) play 6 teams from HE, 1 team from AH, and an Independent. Where are the other three power conferences?! I wish we had more midwestern exposure. I wish I was more impressed. Wonder how the other league teams are faring with their OOC schedules.

Most of those midwest schools aren't terribly keen on traveling to upstate New York, especially those in the B1G and some in the NCHC. The WCHA/NCHC schools that have been on the schedule over the last 10 years or so have been as part of home-and-home agreements - St. Cloud State, Omaha, Miami, Bowling Green, Lake Superior State. Colgate was just recently at the Mariucci Classic at the University of Minnesota. Recent trips in the last 10 years also have included Wisconsin (Badger Showdown), Colorado College/Denver and Michigan State.

There's only so many teams and so many OOC weeks to go around.

BTW, in response to a question someone else had, the games against Arizona State (not the trip to Arizona) and UMASS Lowell will be played at Dartmouth's holiday tournament. It will be a "Classic" format with pre-arranged match-ups so Colgate will not face off with Dartmouth in an OOC game.
