I just got done watching the game in Duluth, and, if I'm a Colgate fan, I'd be worried. It's not just that they lost, because UMD played a tremendous game. It's that, for most of the 3rd period, it felt like Colgate quit. They had about three minutes in the middle of the period where they threatened, but other than that, nothing. Down 2-0 after two periods, it took them 8:45 to get their first shot of the 3rd period. They lost every race to a loose puck. They didn't press into the middle of the ice. Once the Bulldogs made it 3-0, the Raiders were toast.
Not worried here. Have known this is why Colgate has never been and will never be No. 1 in the polls. This is also what we’ve come to expect from Colgate in the NCAA tournament against the WCHA as well, which is superior in almost every way. Colgate’s offense is no match for one of the top defenses in the country. But we did beat 1-10-1 Harvard convincingly…so there’s that.

Polls don’t matter.
PairWise Ranking (PWR) is all that does.

If there is a surprise team in the ECAC this year it has to be St Lawrence.
In the ECAC, maybe. But that’s not saying much:
OSU 11, St. Lawrence 0
The PWR is the measuring stick in the postseason, but it is not the only thing that matters. No team can be taken seriously when it gets smacked around like that against an elite, quality opponent. Clarkson had a good NCAA run against these teams for several seasons, which was great to see for them and for our league. But come tournament time, our teams bow out early.
Colgate needs to salvage this weekend and get the split. Not sure what they can do differently to make that happen.
I certainly didn't see the St Lawrence debacle coming but watched the first 4 goals against which included their changing goalies. OSU looked like they were laser focused. Talent everywhere and working like a well oiled machine.
Other than OSU would have whupped us too, I've felt for a few years now that our very effective offense zone game in the ECAC does not translate well against WCHA teams with their much more aggressive and physical "full-rink" defenses. Danielle and others are simply not given the time they need to be effective skating all over the place as the east/west movement of our offense is generally stifled. We have the scorers to be effective but in my opinion it has to be intentional, fast and directed right at the goal in vertical waves with someone hanging back for rebounds. We also have to increase the volume of shots. UMD is just giving us no puck possession time in their zone for anything else. Hopefully it was just a wake up call rather than a reminder of the fact we are now 0-4 against them in the last few years. Also, hopefully, their goalie is not game MVP for a second game in a row.

Most any top level team that could have added the 6 players that the yuckeyes added through the transfer portal would be a laser focused team with talent everywhere. The fact that they have that and still have competitive games with the top teams in the WCHA says something about the league.
Mostly disagree. Team Chemistry does not happen automatically. It requires the right kind of players and hard work. Agreed 100%.... with talent everywhere. The fact that they have that and still have competitive games with the top teams in the WCHA says something about the league.
I also believe that Colgate will continue to benefit from its willingness to schedule tough non-conference opponents. Colgate is appreciated.

I liked the Ohio State - Colgate matchup but when you speak of chemistry I wish those games had been a little later in the season as it was pretty obvious our chemistry wasn't that good in our very first game of the season.Mostly disagree. This season Colgate's record versus WCHA teams: 1 win, 1 loss, 2 overtimes (one tie, one loss). Not what we'd hoped for, but the team has been competitive in all but one of the games (the 3-0 loss to UMD. It's wonderful that Colgate has been able to schedule games with some of the best teams in the nation.

From a fan perspective, of course. But if you want steel, you have to forge it first.
I'd like to think that playing Colgate up front helped prepare us for WCHA play. For that matter, I'd like to think that playing us helped prepare Colgate for ECAC play.
Colgate ran into a talented goaltender who held our multiple scorers off the score sheet for almost 6 periods, not to mention OT. ‘Gate turned the tables on Saturday and UMD may have felt fortunate to get the tie. We didn’t have any SOG in OT which is concerning.
And fwiw, this site stinks…scores never updated in real time and still waiting days later for the PWR. Also, Colgate’s home broadcasts should be much higher quality with better camera angles!

TeacherBill, I totally agree with you on this site and PWR. I keep checking back and Colgate still has one loss, so I know it hasn’t been updated. I just learned that if you scroll to the bottom, it says when it was last updated. Just now… it read ‘November 21.’ Totally unacceptable.

Not quite true, the second game against Ohio State even though it went into overtime was officially a loss and the loss against Duluth makes it two losses.

No. 4 in the poll; how kind of them to update! Not surprised with the downgrade. I continue to believe that the WCHA is on a different plane. These OOC tilts are crucial and at the end of the day, Colgate came up far short. Clarkson is undefeated in 18 games, but their schedule is very soft IMO. Cornell and Qpac are underperforming a bit and SLU’s series at OSU was all I needed to see to gauge their potential and success. Will be curious to see how UMD fares the rest of the season.
