Colgate 2023-24

It’s Senior Night on Saturday, so I would think if Carter sits, it would be Friday. Go ‘gate!!!

Andrew Takacs is in goal for Colgate.
Jack Watson is in goal for RPI.
Max Elberty did a great job in ‘Chalk Talk’ tonight talking about equipment technology (sticks and skates).

Colgate’s Ross Mitton scored from Nick Anderson. 5-1 SOG.

Halfway through the first period, it is already getting chippy. Previous play under review from RPI challenge. 5-minute major penalty to Colgate.
8-2 SOG.

Wicked, did you make it to tonight’s game?
Section 9, Row 6, Seat 9 (next to my fave RPI fans).

RPI PPG. PP over. 9-3 SOG.

Colgate 13, RPI 6, SOG after one.
Colgate 1, RPI 1, score after one.

Colgate scored a beauty by Pierson Brandon (from Levi Glasman).

Colgate penalty (Takacs for tripping). Killed.
RPI penalty. Killed.
RPI penalty. Colgate PPG by Alex DiPaolo (from Nick Anderson and Brett Chorske).

What an incredible individual effort by Pierson Brandon to score (from Daniel Panetta).

RPI penalty. SHG by RPI after Takacs lost track of it.

Colgate 24, RPI 14, SOG after two.
Colgate 4, RPI 2, score after two.

RPI penalty. Killed.
RPI penalty called. Takacs to bench for extra man. Colgate scores!! Ross Mitton unassisted.
And Colgate scores PPG!! Daniel Panetta from Ethan Manderville and Tommy Bergsland.

Colgate penalty. Killed.
RPI penalty. Killed.

Colgate & RPI penalties.

Colgate 34, RPI 23, SOG final.
Colgate 6, RPI 2, score final.

7:30 p.m. puck-drop and I am safely back in Owego, N.Y., at 11:30 p.m.
I am over-the-moon again tonight after watching two blow-outs at the Class of 1965 Arena in Hamilton, N.Y...
Colgate women 5, Brown 1, and
Colgate men 6, RPI 2.

I actually felt bad for the Brown women's goalie.
She lets in the third Colgate goal and looks up at the scoreboard to see the score 3-0, but also that her team has just 4 SOG at that point. 4 total.
How demoralizing would that be??!!

As for the men's game, I sat next to my fave couple from RPI (or, rather, they sat next to me again). They are RPI season ticket-holders and lovely people, but they are just beaten down by RPI's lack of success in the past two decades. I feel for them, too.

I really enjoyed tonight's game as many of this thread's faithful were in attendance, in addition to so many of the players' parents for Senior Weekend.
You combine our blowout win with Dartmouth's win, Clarkson's win (at Quinnipiac!) and Cornell's loss (at home!) to Union, and it was just a very satisfying night. It appears that Saint Lawrence is no longer in contention for an opening round bye in the ECAC tournament.

Have fun 'morrow night and Go 'Gate!!

7 and 0 at home, averaging 2.0 GAA, in 2024. Would be amazing if we can achieve 10 and 0 at home in 2024! Union will be tough, as of course will be the quarterfinals matchup.

Let's cheer for RPI to take Cornell to overtime today, and for the Raiders to beat Union. That would give the Raiders the second seed. But I'll be delighted with our #3.

Cornell is now outside the NCAA tournament at-large break, and will need a strong performance in the ECAC playoffs.

So it is my understanding that if we get one more point than Cornell on Saturday we are the 2 seed......

i believe we have more wins than them right now and in order to get more than one point better we need to keep that lead. And we would win the points vs the top four as well due to the QU win in regulation.

If im wrong please advise

Appert was considered a hot property as a top assistant at Denver and was grabbed by RPI...the loser in all of this, despite a c. 55% winning record and very good graduation rates, was Colgate's Dan Fridgen...Appert was c. 40% of his games as the RPI coach, then went, I believe, to the National Development Program...Smith has had really lousy support from the past administration, including the cancellation of a season during COVID and petty contract issues with the prior RPI president...the guy has deserved a lot better and so have passionate and knowledgeable RPI alums/fans...Colgate in this regard has been quite fortunate...

Slight correction...Fridgen had a 52% winning percentage, Appert 42%...a substantial difference considering that each coaches for well over a decade...

Just wanted to pop in and say that as a long time men's hockey supporter who had backed off for the last 5 or so years to support the
women's more exciting playing style and success, this first year under Coach Harder has been a thrill to watch. I'm loving the speed and pace we now play at. Sure we still make mistakes and struggle on penalty kills but I always feel even when down we are capable of winning which I did not feel for the longest time. Worse, I felt we had become a "taken for granted" afterthought in the ECAC and beyond. I'm thinking now that few teams want to play us and hope this is just the start of a new exciting era!

Great job taking care of business last night. Let’s close the regular season with another win and sneak into second. I absolutely love the balanced scoring from this team; it truly seems like on any given night, anyone can step up. Makes the team infinitely more watchable than the iterations which had one scoring line and three checking lines. Also, makes us a much more difficult matchup because the scoring is so spread out.

For our RPI friends, we feel and understand the pain. Before last year’s run, we had suffered through about ten years in the wilderness.

It would be great for the league if RPI could regain its footing.

The Dave smith hiring made little sense 7 years ago and it makes even less sense now.
Appert was a really great recruiter but had even less support from the administration but somehow managed to make the NCAA tournament with RPI. You’re right Fridgen was the loser in all this. He was the most successful by far. If Dave smith survives this season he’s not making it past next year with another season like this year. He’s not doing it on the recruiting trail to even come close to turning the corner. We’re just prolonging the inevitable. It also turns out appert is a pretty damn good coach. He’s had nothing but success since leaving RPI.

Wasn't sure what to expect after our trip to the Capital District. Great sweep on Senior Weekend; would not look forward to facing Union again. Another lead almost blown and yet another EAG, but eeked out the W. Starr would have been rockin' it tonight in the early 90s. Congrats to Sullivan on a great game. Colgate not known for such success with new coaches, but Harder getting it done...and with a little help from DVs legacy season.

Great job by the team this weekend. We were pretty much locked into 3rd place but we still came away with 2 wins.

As others on the thread have said it’s great to see the balanced scoring. Tonight it was the DiPaolo line that led the way.

Was at the game tonight. These coaches challenges are getting ridiculous. You want to celebrate a goal but then have to wait 5-10 minutes while the refs are looking at who knows what. If a challenge is denied then the challenging team should be penalized.

Congrats to the Raiders for their 3rd place regular season finish, well above their 6th pace ranking in the pre-season poll. ... and an undefeated 2024 home stand.

Tonight's game with Union was very exciting to watch, as both teams skated fast and hard.

Colgate's quarterfinal opponent would be Union for a set of rematches if they and Clarkson can win their one-and-done games next Saturday.

Thanks Iowa. Sorry you weren’t at the game yesterday. But if the team keeps playing like they are I’ll see you in Lake Placid in a few weeks.

kudos from TheCoat to Magoo...from 3-4-1 to 13-7-2 is impressive...it gets tougher from here and playing Union again (most probably) will not be easy...tough Pairwise this season and it could be that if Q-Pac takes the cheese at Lake Placid the ECAC will get only one NCAA bid...Cornell is close, but at this stage too close for comfort...gotta stop taking March down south 'cause I'm missing Lake Placid like crazy...made it to Boston Garden in 1981 and 1990, Lake Placid in 1995 and years thereafter (2000, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008), even forgettable trips to Atlantic City...back to LP in 2014 and 2015...congrats to our seniors who have set a great standard for those who follow...this year has been sometimes frustrating, but overall very rewarding and certainly exciting...kudos as well to Mike and his impressive young staff...

With .500 hockey as the consensus goal this season, this is where we stand tonight (after the win against Union)...

16-14-4 overall (FINAL).

13-7-2 in ECAC Hockey (FINAL).

3-7-2 out-of-conference (FINAL).

8-6-2 at home (FINAL).

7-8-2 on the road (FINAL).

2-3-1 against 2023 NCAA Tournament teams (FINAL).

I am really so proud of Mike Harder, Zach Badalamenti, Anthony Walsh and Liam Conway. Holy cow!!
Who would have thought? Number 3 of 12 ECAC Hockey teams. One point from number 2. All-new coaching staff.
How did our home record ever beat our away record?
I don't know our 2024-25 non-conference schedule, but whatever it is, we need to do better than 3-7-2.

Magoo, I hated to miss last night. But my life's strategy is... you induct me into your HoF, I am there to accept. But I am all in from here to Saint Paul.

GreenCoat, I am envious that you made Boston Garden and Atlantic City, both arenas that I have never made. Can you make Lake Placid this year? Lastly, is your GreenCoat from golfing? Have you won the Masters (in your mind)?

Shabby, congrats on your season-long ECAC Pick 'Em title win this season!! I know for a fact that that is not easy!! I also know that I will have to change my strategy for next season. he he he

Lastly, thanks to all who post on this thread. My guess is that all think that they are realists, not overly positive nor overly negative. I know that I view myself as a middle-of-the-road realist. Of course, others may think that I lean right or left. he he he
