Colgate 2023-24

With the weekend sweep the Raiders are now six points up on 4th place Clarkson and eight points up on 5th place Union. The Raiders need only five points in the final four games to finish the regular season in the top four. It may not be easy, though, since both Clarkson and Union will get their chances to topple the Raiders.

We did what we needed to do tonight, but not much more.
Still, a home weekend sweep was crucial in our bid for an ECAC Hockey tourney first-round bye and second-round host.
For me, I enjoyed being in the Ross Mitton cheering section tonight and then visiting with the Professor (and Mary Ann).
I also appreciated the fact that the Brown pep band was in attendance, and I very much enjoyed their music.

With .500 hockey as the consensus goal this season, this is where we stand tonight (after the win against Brown)...

13-13-4 overall (with 4 to play).

10-6-2 in ECAC Hockey (with 4 to play).

3-7-2 out-of-conference (FINAL).

7-6-2 at home (with 2 to play).

6-7-2 on the road (with 2 to play).

2-3-1 against 2023 NCAA Tournament teams (FINAL).

Excellent weekend taking all six points at home. Nice to see the boys take care of business in Hamilton.

Also, another huge game for McMann with the Leafs—two goals and an assist. What’s wild is he was going to be scratched three games ago. Illness ran through the team so he ended up suiting up . . . and had a hat trick. And now has six points in his last three games. Way to represent ‘gate in the Show. Go, Bobby!

It's fun again to open up USCHO in the morning. This team is getting better and Harder has them believing. Short of a collapse we will be playing at home in the playoffs.

That OOC stat looks ugly as usual Iowa but in reality it’s 7 losses out of 12 games, not so bad. Would love that series at Maine back.

Have been waiting for a new era to begin, and Harder is the one to make it happen. Excited to see what talent he and his staff will lure to Hamilton.

Great weekend sweep. The North Country is always a fun rivalry. Great schools with amazing fan support.

certainly a different style of attack under Harder...just look at the assists by our defenseman last night (and throughout the season)...we took care of business this weekend and have been successful in scoring by committee...keep accumulating points and we're looking good for third place...Metz IMO has stepped up during the campaign and has helped offset the loss of Belpedio...Gylander solid, save the second Brown goal...save percentages are down across the country; Gylander's numbers on the surface don't look great, but he gives us a chance to win every night...congrats to the women (again) and would love to see them in the Final Four again...

On the College Hockey News site you can "customize" a Pairwise Ranking...I did the following changes (which I think are all pretty reasonable): a win over UConn in game #2 of that series, a split with UMass-Lowell, a win over Maine instead of a tie in game #2 of that series, and a win (and not an ot loss to LIU) in game #2 of that series...with those "adjustments" we'd be #22 in the Pairwise...17-11-4 albeit with a somewhat weak o-o-c slate...

Greencoat, to your point about style of play, I am optimistic the frenetic offensive pace will attract some quality recruits.

Marmot, I would agree...also, I see Dartmouth continuing to make strides under Cashman; Harvard is bringing in a talented class (no surprise)...I do hope the "NIL" issue will not seriously hurt the ECAC...

I am a fan of college hockey, so I put a lot of emphasis on the PairWise Rankings (PWR) even though I know for Colgate it is now all about the ECAC Hockey tournament to get into the NCAA tournament (like last year). Having said that, today, Colgate is PWR #29 of the 64 D1 MIH programs. We’ve been in the 40s and 30s so long, I forget that a PWR in the 20s was possible (especially for a team with an all-new coaching staff). Quinnipiac is #8 and Cornell is #11, and both of those numbers would likely put them in the NCAA tournament if the Selection Show was today. Go ‘Gate!!

Despite last night's win, Gate dropped to 32nd in the PWR.

Greencoat - I forgot about those games with Lowell. But you’re right on about our scoring. We have a lot of balance offensively in our top 3 lines and we don’t have to rely on 1 or 2 guys for offense. For example McGuire didn’t get a point all weekend but a lot of other guys stepped up.

And 6 (regulation) wins in a row at home! I never thought I’d see the day.

Shabby, Alaska beat Long Island, 4-0, in the final game of the night (as it was in Fairbanks). We couldn’t beat LIU twice, but Fairbanks can (repeatedly). Move us down a peg or two in PWR.

Mike Harder has said from day one, ‘I want us to have fun. I want defensemen to have fun, meaning I want them to be at the top of the offensive zone. It’s all-in.’ That free-wheeling style of play is fun to watch as a fan, but it will cause occasional headaches when we get caught up-ice behind the opposition’s offense. Thankfully we have Carter Gylander’s kick-saves to save us. he he he

McMann with another goal for the Leafs today, an empty netter. He now has six goals in February. So nice to finally see a ‘gate alum in the big leagues.

The Friday, March 1, home game against RPI has been moved to a 7:30 p.m. puck-drop to better accommodate everyone at the arena following the women’s tournament game that afternoon.

McMann now has seven goals and nine points in his last five games, good to see.

The recruiting pitch to McMann should utilized in the future to try to procure top shelf recruits.

And now the coaching staff can point to McMann’s success in the NHL and say “that could be you”! I’d imagine the Leafs are popular in wide swaths of Canada so it’s a great showcase for ‘gate hockey.

At the very first game at Class of '65 Arena, I watched next to an NHL scout. He said really good things about Bobby McMann, when it was his very first game as a Raider!

The fact that Bobby wore #9 at Colgate gave me a hunch to expect big things from him. The previous 2 Colgate players to wear #9 before him were Austin Smith and Tyler Burton, and we know how successful they were at Colgate. Bobby, of course, is now finding success in the NHL!

Carter Gylander is in goal for Colgate tonight.
In goal for Saint Lawrence is Ben Kraws.

One minute in, Ethan Manderville scored from Daniel Panetta.

Saint Lawrence penalty. Killed.

Colgate’s Daniel Panetta scored from Ethan Manderville.

Saint Lawrence penalty. Killed.
