Colgate 2022-23

As a good friend and Coach once told me “a 3 goal early lead is the hardest to defend against.” Thanks for living up to that mantra, guys!!!! Woohoo! Keep it going! Go ‘gate!!!!

Back in Ogdensburg for the night and still pumped up. Many thoughts running through my head…

These two teams (and Clarkson) are just so evenly matched after this regular season. Tonight’s game never felt out-of-control, even when we were down 3-0. The lead in SOG just went back-n-forth all night. There were times neither team looked good bringing the puck out of their own end (read that ‘good forechecking by the opposition’). There were goals that I am sure Carter Gylander wanted back, but the same could likely be said for Emil Zetterquist. They were equals tonight. And a couple of Carter’s kick-saves saved the game for us (again).

There was a contingent of very vocal Colgate fans tonight behind the ‘Gate bench. I sat closer to the other end, so I never really got a chance to see who they were, but they were out in force. I saw several players’ parents, but they are usually quiet supporters of the team.

‘Donnie’ Vaughan continues to get a warm reception from the fans at his alma mater. Tonight’s game was well-attended, but not even close to being sold-out.

I don’t know what else one can say about the Young brothers, Colton (1g-2a) and Alex (1g-0a), tonight.

I thought the penalties were pretty evenly called and neither team scored a PPG, including in OT. We even got our ‘too many men on the ice’ penalty in tonight.

Finally, after the first couple of minutes of OT tonight, Clarkson Doug leaned over and said, ‘Colgate had better get their act together soon or this game is going to be over quickly.’ And he was right. Saint Lawrence just came out hungrier for the win. But, the OT win just completed that metaphor for Colgate this entire season (and last year as well). Our players just never give up. They may be down, but rarely are they totally out of the game. They believe in themselves and are incredibly resilient.

Congrats on the win Iowa!

I went to the Harvard-Princeton game tonight but got to see the OT of your game on my iPad waiting for traffic to clear out afterwards:)

Did not see this happening. To dig ourselves another early hole is a familiar problem. Despite his flashes of brilliance, Gylander is a huge part of that. He’s way too unreliable and inconsistent imo. But what alternative do we have other than to keep him in net? None. Can only imagine how deflated the crowd must have been after the game tying goal. GWG was sweet revenge on the eeked-out breakaway by SLU, highlight reel stuff. Would be good to cash in on a ppg. A W tonight would be a good turnaround after throwing away home ice.

Unreal, turned the game off at 3-0 in the first, never turned it back on. Feeling good this am and going to the NCAA game this pm.

This team gives you more ups and downs than almost every other since my freshman year (1968)...they have the skill to erase big leads and I almost feel better when they're down a goal or two early in the third vis-a-vis ahead by a goal...IMO very good job by Gylander after a rough first period...Thank you Alberta for the Young Brothers...play hard again tonight boys...

I tuned into the ESPN+ broadcast for the OT after Harvard finished off Princeton. There's no question you guys have offensive skill up and down your lineup and the Young brothers are a handful. But your D and goaltending are not that great. Guylander gives up some soft goals and it's probably one reason why you finished behind SLU. Not saying you won't win the series because the loss has to be deflating for the Saints. Just my two cents.

Yes the Youngs have been great but we can’t keep relying on them to provide most of the offense. Need the Dipaolo and McGuire lines to step it up.

Carter Gylander and Emil Zetterquist led their respective teams on the ice tonight.

It appears the Wisconsin women are advancing to their Frozen Four in Duluth, not Colgate. Final score: Wisconsin 4, Colgate 2.

Don Vaughan challenging for a penalty (Matt Verboon taken down). Successful. Five minute penalty against Phillipe Chapleau.

Colgate PP goal by Ethan Manderville (from Matt Verboon and Nick Anderson).

Colgate 13, Saint Lawrence 6, SOG after one.
Colgate 1, Saint Lawrence 0, score after one.

Alex DiPaolo scores at 45 seconds into second period.

14-6 SOG. Keep the foot on the gas, ‘Gate.

Matt Verboon (unassisted) scores to put Colgate up 3-0.
Seconds later, Saint Lawrence gets their first.
Colgate scores their fourth seconds later, but play is under review for major penalty against Colgate.
Crazy 90-seconds or so of play.
penalty to Tommy Bergsland for Contact to the Head (and Game Misconduct). Even strength. Colgate’s fourth goal negated by penalty.

Penalties to both Colgate (embellishment) and Saint Lawrence (hooking).

Colgate penalty for interference. Killed.

Saint Lawrence 21, Colgate 17, SOG after two.
Colgate 3, Saint Lawrence 1, score after two.

As we have seen repeatedly this year, with a lead entering the third period, we will take our foot off the gas, meaning that we will get defensive and just try to dump the puck out of our end. We will see if we do this again within minutes and, if we do, we will see how successful we are with that strategy.

Saint Lawrence goal, second of the night, was called ‘no goal’ on the ice. Challenged by Saint Lawrence coach. No time-out remaining for SLU.

Halfway through third and it is getting chippy.

‘No Goal’ called on-ice. Video review to see if it crossed the Colgate goal line. Officially no goal.

Zetterquist pullled with 4 minutes left.
Saint Lawrence scores to make it 3-2.

Saint Lawrence 33, Colgate 19, final SOG.
Colgate 3, Saint Lawrence 2, final score.

The SLU announcers on ESPN+ were so biased it got sickening ! No class and crying about everything, pathetic.

Congratulations to Colgate. Let's make it a traveling partner title game. :-)

(No, seriously, beat Q please.)

Back in Ogdensburg…

Well, we employed the defensive strategy in the third period (and part of the second) and it was successful for us tonight. I still hate it.

Manderville, DiPaolo and Verboon scored for us. Obviously they heeded the calls for more balanced scoring.

And if Emil Zetterquist is a better goalie than Carter Gylander, as has been suggested on here, then his reward is that he gets to watch Carter’s Colgate team play at Lake Placid on ESPN+ from the comfort of his own place… for the second straight year.

Finally, I predicted two one-goal games up here. I just didn’t expect not to be heading back to Saint Lawrence tomorrow for a third game. I look forward to traveling to Lake Placid next weekend. Go ‘Gate!

Congratulations on your win this weekend. Would’ve loved for my Saints to have made it back to Lake Placid, but I’ll be rooting for you guys none the less.

Does anyone know what section each team has for their fans allotment of tickets? We got our tickets already, but just curious who’s fan section we’ll be closest to.
