Colgate 2022-23

90-minute drive became 135-minute drive home due to snow and freezing rain, but just more time to think about tonight’s game…

If Dartmouth hadn’t imploded with stupid penalties, I am not sure which team would have been heading out on the links tomorrow. We are just bound and determined to try to waste leads in the third period.

As for their penalties, two separate game misconducts in one game, I am not sure that those were just two players going rogue after being frustrated by being on a 12th place team at the end of the season in a 12-team conference. I think it just might be Reid’s style of play(er). They are becoming the North Dakota of the ECAC, in my opinion.

Fortunately, we weren’t intimidated by them and their tactics. Nor were the referees.

Finally, I think we can beat Saint Lawrence in three games. But, if we make it to Lake Placid, I don’t see us going to the championship game (no matter who we play in the first game). We obviously have some truly skilled individuals, but we just don’t have the total team package that is necessary at that level.

That was as unimpressive a game as I would expect for both teams. It’s clear now why we gave away home ice as the 4th seed. Gylander can have his stellar moments but is usually a sieve and gives up the first goal - again. Given Dartmouth’s penalties, we still only had 15 shots on net to their 21, not including goals scored. They played some good defense. SLUs goalie will give us fits. Not sure why we were the only Friday team; extra day of rest can’t hurt.

all I can say is "over and done"...we can certainly play with SLU and might have the better team...BUT our third period approach (and execution) scares TheCoat...I wouldn't say the goaltending for Dartmouth was even passable last night...we certainly must lead the nation in EAG allowed...

I thought we had a strong first period last night. We were skating well and playing physical. But as it’s been for the past month or so we don’t play a 60 minute game. I agree with Iowa and Greencoat that we don’t seem to have the killer instinct to put teams away when we have the lead late in a game.

Next weekend is a tossup, even if we would have been home.

So, it will be best-of-three Quarterfinals next weekend, featuring...

#10 Yale at #1 Quinnipiac,
#9 Princeton at #2 Harvard,
#6 Clarkson at #3 Cornell, and
#5 Colgate at #4 Saint Lawrence.

The coaches of the four losing teams in the one-and-done first-round who will be complaining the most about the new ECAC Hockey tourney format will be...

#7 RPI, #8 Union, #11 Brown and #12 Dartmouth.

And I personally hope that they complain loud-and-clear to the powers that be within ECAC Hockey.

Finally, my Facebook post tonight...

"Serendipity. Several times since I have been back East, it has crept into my life. Last night, after the Dartmouth at Colgate college hockey game, I was bemoaning the fact that the current Dartmouth team (with its relatively new coach) is not playing up to the high standards of its previous long-time coach, Bob Gaudet. Tonight, I went to Geneva, N.Y. (after the winter weather advisories of last night scrapped any thoughts of going to New Oxford, Penna., or Ogdensburg, N.Y., today) for a Division-3 college hockey game. And who was there? Yup... former Dartmouth coach Bob Gaudet. He was watching the Babson Beavers, for whom his son Jim Gaudet is an assistant coach. And who is one of Bob Gaudet's fave players at Dartmouth? Yup... Cam Strong, son of former sprint car racer Doug Strong (a.k.a. Dartmouth Doug), who just happens to be part of my Frozen Foursome with Clarkson Doug and Alaska Mike. Serendipity indeed."

And, for the record, after visiting with him tonight, Bob Gaudet has nothing but kind words for, and good memories of, "Donnie Vaughan."

Thanks for the play-by-play IBT. It brought to life a game that sounded like a "vanilla" affair. Whatever.....We go on to play the Larries, and hope for better luck at Appleton. Hopefully DV knows some secrets about the sheet up there that can be exploited for some "board friendly" goals.

Any other ‘Gate keepers headed to Canton this coming weekend for the best-of-three series against Saint Lawrence?

I plan to go to the LIU/Wisconsin women’s game on Thursday in Hamilton, then head north to Ogdensburg and attend all Colgate/SLU games with Clarkson Doug. I fully expect the series will go three games.

Going to Gate-Wisco sat, maybe if theirs a game three I'll head up. Only two hours from my house and see my alma mater SUNY Canton. Wonder if the Hoot Owl's still open ?

The Hoot is still open and Danny Fay still owns it. The place is still the go-to college bar for students from both colleges.

Tick Tock, Sergi's, what was the Italian place right across from the park ?
It was ZaZa's I believe.

Oh, TeacherBill, now you’ve ruined the whole weekend for me… in Canton, N.Y.

he he he

Seriously, I have always been supportive of WIH, but have never really enjoyed it (without the checking). And I have seen it at the highest levels… at Minnesota, at Wisconsin, at Colgate, etc.

But, until last year, Colgate at Vermont, I have never really enjoyed it. But, this year, at Cornell (vs. #1 Ohio State), at Colgate and at Yale, I am starting to come around.

Plus, it is admittedly fun to follow a team that is very likely going to advance to the national tournament (let alone advance to the Frozen Four).

We all wish the Men’s and Women’s teams well this weekend. Should be fun.

And Don has won 5 road playoff series in his career.

I arrived in Ogdensburg last night, after leaving Wisconsin/LIU women’s game in Hamilton after first period. 3-0 score. 21-2 SOG. The blood-letting wasn’t even fun to watch. That’s five dollars that I will never get back.

I am excited about this weekend’s series in Canton (with Clarkson Doug). I expect both tonight’s and tomorrow’s games to be one-goal games, and I expect to back on Sunday. Does anybody know if that game would be Sunday afternoon or evening (if needed)?

Thanks, W Slappaahs! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for LP. Iowa - I hope you are enjoying your time in the North Country. Looking forward to your game posts. Let's Go 'gate!!!!!!! Get 'er done!!!

Carter Gylander led Colgate out onto the ice tonight, as did Emil Zetterquist for Saint Lawrence.

Second shot on goal results in SLU goal. Colgate 5-2 SOG.

A shot taken after face-off won by SLU eludes Gylander.

And a Saint Lawrence breakaway results in their third goal.

Colgate penalty for slashing. Killed.
Saint Lawrence penalty for interference. Killed.

Colgate 11, Saint Lawrence 7, SOG after one.
Saint Lawrence 3, Colgate 0, score after one.

Saint Lawrence penalty for holding. Killed.

Alex Young sniped one (from bro Colton).

Saint Lawrence penalty. Killed.

Reid Irwin (from Tommy Bergsland) with Colgate’s second goal.

Colgate getting its usual ‘too many men’ penalty out of the way now (1:54 in the third period still to serve).

Saint Lawrence 22, Colgate 21, SOG after two.
Saint Lawrence 3, Colgate 2, score after two.

Penalty killed.

Saint Lawrence penalty for tripping. Killed.

Daniel Panetta ties it up!!

Colgate penalty for tripping. Killed.

Colgate 29, Saint Lawrence 23, SOG after regulation.
Colgate 3, Saint Lawrence 3, score after regulation.

We are going to OT!!

Saint Lawrence penalty for tripping. Killed.

Colton Young with the game-winner!!

Colgate 36, Saint Lawrence 31, SOG final.
Colgate 4, Saint Lawrence 3, OT win!!
