Colgate 2021-22

ECAC announced first, second and third team All League the other day...frankly, I don't get exercised about much of this; I don't see a lot of other (non-Colgate) league games, but 15 of the 18 selectees came from the top four teams in the league...seems like a bit of overkill and perhaps a lack of extensive analysis...just spiff balling here, but...

The CHN article on Mike Shafer says six players will play tonight that didn't play in our sweep of Cornell. Yikes Also a small chance Mike will be back after his tripto his Doctors in NYC.

Don't put too much credence into this...its the ECAC we're talking about after all. They nominated Tsekos and Linden as POY candidates and they weren't even 1st team selections....(I'm an RPI fan....so I'm not complaining !)

Benson played unreal. But, you can’t win games when the other team has an entire period on the power play in a 60 minute game. Offense needs to get going tomorrow night.

did anybody really think we were going to win a game where your coach has such little faith in the talent of his team that he sits back and simply tries to defend the goal for 40 minutes...several points: 1) the officiating was simply disgusting; not a surprise since the pathetic ECAC needs fannies in the seats in Lake Placid, 2) the Cornell color guy is a jerk and should try his hand doing color commentary for women's field hockey, and 3) Cornell deserved to win the game...Coach Schafer knew what to do...we do not press, we sit back, he pinches his D-men all night and gets away with it...feel for Benson, not happy with our (usual) passive approach on the ice, not confident tomorrow...I'm sure the worms heading ECAC Hockey are happy...

OUCH! A 3rd period lead turned regulation loss! And we weren’t chasing the score for roughly 98.5% of the game!

Stay out of the box and go get ‘em tomorrow.

A few things, we played well for 40 min. Saying am we sat back for 40 is a discredit to the team.

graber is a pathetic referee, in the last two games it has been overly one sided (last yale game and this game).

I didn’t see the 5 min major hit but with the hitting going on on both sides (not getting called) I have a hard time believing it was a 5 min major.

hunorous parts of the game, Cornell fans going insane for a save by benson. I mean you really should look in the net before getting that excited. Cornell player going to the wrong penalty box, seriously? It’s your own damn rink, how don’t you know.

nice let’s go Colgate chant heard in lynah can’t say I ever remembering that happen

If we pursue the same passive approach to the game tomorrow I wouldn't bet my house on it...perhaps they'll bring in a different officiating crew, not that it will make much difference...the Advanced Metrics of this game are simply mind blowing...

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Don Vaughan

"I was very happy with our effort tonight. It's a tough place to play against a very heavy team. We were prepared for that kind of game and did a lot of things very well. I would like to see our power plays get a little more opportunity. In two games we have had three power play opportunities. In the end we battled very hard. Mitch Benson was great again tonight in goal. We have another opportunity tomorrow and I know our guys will be ready to grind again."

Most coaches take some level of responsibility. Not one acknowledgement of penalties or being outshot 17-43 (if I read the stats correctly, which are presented in an annoying format now). Admire Vaughan for staying positive and not blowing a fuse, but it’s not all unicorns and rainbows, either.

Very best of luck to the women’s team today. Heartbreaking OT loss last year.

Simple statistics can at times be somewhat misleading, but consider the following...Cornell 82 shot attempts, Colgate 28...Close In shot attempts: Cornell 62, Colgate 26...Benson was great and, with a little puck luck (let's be honest) we stayed in the game...but this thing could've been easily 4-1 or 5-1 and yours truly is not criticizing the players (they played hard) but our approach, as was pointed out by the Cornell broadcasters in the first period...SOG during last two periods were something like 37-10...over the years Colgate has had a very poor record against so-called superior opponents...yes, we did well against an in jury-plagued team in February, but against Harvard, Q-Pac and Clarkson we were 0-6-0, 6 goals scored, 25 goals allowed...really, the only season where we did well against highly-ranked teams was in 2013-14 (even the 2014-15 team that lost to Harvard in the ECAC finals had trouble beating high Pairwise teams)...in the end it kept us from receiving an NCAA bid...after the beautiful goal by Verboon we probably had 1-2 legit scoring chances...Cornell has been a victim of much bad luck over the past two seasons (the 2020 cancellation where the Big Red were either #1 or #2 in the nation) and last year (where the Ivies were up to their usual "woke" behavior)...assuming we lose, I am rooting for Coach Shafer and his team to win a national championship...(glad I'm not an RPI fan today...my God)

I don't complain about the officiating very often but last night's officiating was a travesty. The "major" in the third and ejection cost us the game. I hope I can see it again maybe on Youtube today and see if it was worse than what I saw.
Saw one replay last night and it looked like the player was crosschecked in the lower back near the boards in center ice. I don't think he even went down on the ice. Ridiculous, then a Cornell player comes in and hits the Colgate player, a small scrum ensues and the Cornell player got nothing. A minor was called, Schafer complains, refs go off the ice for video review and come back and change it to a major. Said to myself, game over !

We simply cannot give them six powerplays and expect to win. If it wasn't for Bensen's phenominal play it could have been way worse.

There was also a play where the Cornell player tackled our guy away from the puck and laid on him….interference.

I think the problem is that we are the smaller team and when we make a big hit and take down the bigger player it looks much worse and odd than when the bigger player hits us and it is “expected” we go down. Now this doesn’t matter in the rule book but does for perception

Well, it appears that we have our work cut out for us to win our sport’s national championship. We just need to run the table… two wins in Ithaca, two wins in Lake Placid, two wins at our NCAA Regional, and the final two wins in Boston.
Wherever you go, Go ‘Gate!!
