Re: Colgate 2014-15
Okay, now your original post makes sense to me. Now for my thoughts on last night's game:
In short form: We did it again! Two years in a row we win an OT thriller on the miracle ice!
In long form: This was another close game with a lot of excitement. I saw in St. Lawrence this year a lot of what I saw in Colgate last season: a young team that comes together at the right time, makes a good regular season run to finish 2nd place, then make it to Lake Placid. Even more, they didn't have just one or two forwards putting up eye-popping numbers, but rather a balanced scoring attack. And they had a freshman goaltender that was putting up some amazing statistics!
Anyways, I was a bit shocked to see us score first. When was the last time we had a 1-0 lead in an ECAC Semifinal game before last night? I thought scoring first and early was key to set the tone of the game, and it worked in the 1st period. But SLU had an answer in the 2nd period, which did not surprise me given that their season was on the line. For the most part, this game felt a lot like our games against Dartmouth: a close game, tied after 2 periods, then we score to take the lead in the 3rd and stick to our system. Until there was 1:36 left on the clock. I'm not saying we collapsed here, but when we gave up that EAG late in the 3rd, I was getting stressed out. I was almost certain the reverse of our game last year was going to happen, as if it were some sort of karma. But then Mike Borkowski scores in OT to send us back to the ECAC Championship game. It's hard to believe he's scored back-to-back gamewinners after all he's been through! Even more strange, I'm 4-0 whenever I see Colgate play an OT playoff game.
The wider sheet of ice certainly brought about a new dynamic to the game last night. There were some instances where what normally may have been icing on the NHL sheet was not icing on the Olympic sized sheet, most notably when a player attempted to ricochet a puck off the boards. With the wider ice, I noticed Colgate had an easier time clearing the puck at times, and there were more offsides calls and fewer icing calls altogether. Also, we had a great fan base last night! We were chanting "Let's go 'Gate" and "Here we go Colgate, here we go" several times, effectively balancing out the "S-L-U!" chants from the many SLU fans in attendance. I didn't see any Harvard fan base at the early game yesterday, so here's hoping we can make the Herb Brooks Arena a "home-ice advantage" of sorts for the Raiders tonight! Lastly, we were the only school that brought its pep band to Lake Placid!
Let's go 'Gate!!!!!
