Colgate 2014-15

Re: Colgate 2014-15

With all the Borkowski talk I feel like we have to be more realistic. I'd love to see him come back this season or playoffs, but to be realistic we have to assume he is gone for the season. The school announced that he was out for the season and although people can heal faster than others, they wouldn't have announced that unless they are almost 100% sure. Colgate and vaughn don't like to talk about specific injuries so it would be out of character to put out that presser and go back on it.

Going forward we just have to stay healthy, at least until spiro gets back. We easily forget that one thing we liked about this team in September was the depth. And although we are not 21-0 we have done well for the injuries we have had.

I worry about finn, he has been playing very well (some of those games should have gotten out of hand but we are in them). But his D has failed him recently and now you lose a stalwart on the D line it is only going to make it tougher.

I would hate to see Borkowski come back, be at half speed, and maybe incur another injury on top of the first one because he's favoring his leg. I'd rather count on him for the future than press him to compete again this year.

I worry about burnout with Finn. He's played a lot of games; I know he's young and can probably handle it, but with the playoffs coming up down the line, how long can he continue to play every game and be "almost" perfect? Wonder if Hamilton might be substituted for the Dartmouth game? I know we can't afford to lose any games in the league going forward, but I always fear the worst :(

The question is: would it be better to sacrifice our standing in the league to have a rested goalie? It would be nice to get a top-four position, but when the time comes that we have locked up a top-four or a 5 thru 8 spot, then I would hope he gets some rest.

I agree with you - I don't think Borkwski will be back; and I don't think I want him to take any chance of further injury that might affect the rest of his career. Just was passing along what I was told be people who know what they have seen. They did not say they thought he'd return - just that they were amazed at his recovery. We all want 'Gate to win, but his complete recovery is far more important.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

I agree with both of you on all points. Just when you said he's been skating I got to wondering. What a story that would make, Spink, Borokowski and Goulakis lead Colgate to Frozen Four. Ok, waking up !

Colskate....Finn can have a weekend off if we get a bye.(1-4)

Is it possible Borkowski will receive red-shirt status but by coming back would lose it?

Prognosticating the PWR, January 22, 2015

Right now, Colgate is 16th in the Pairwise Rankings, which would make them the first team out, assuming the highest ranked team from each conference were to win its conference tournament. But we play Harvard this weekend, and a win against the Crimson would give us an RPI bonus, something we haven't had yet this year. A sweep this weekend would certainly put us back on the right side of the PWR Mason-Dixon line. Other outcomes that would help our cause include:

Sacred Heart sweeps Mercyhurst (gives us the maximum RPI boost when compared to Mercyhurst sweeping or these two teams splitting)
Robert Morris sweeps Holy Cross
St. Cloud sweeps Western Michigan (also gives us the maximum RPI boost)
BU sweeps Vermont
Providence sweeps UMass Lowell
Northeastern sweeps Notre Dame

Yes, all of our OOC opponents are playing the same opponent twice. Plus, in order to pass some teams currently ahead of us, we'll also want these outcomes:

Miami sweeps Denver
Wisconsin sweeps Michigan (doesn't seem likely at all, but crazier things have happened)

Re: Colgate 2014-15

My understanding is that if a player plays in any game(s) after the halfway point of the season they are ineligible to redshirt. I've also been told that Mike really wants to graduate with his class - so redshirtinh may not be an issue. I just find it hard to believe he can recover from that injury well enough to play effectively - and to not be prone to more injury because things aren't quite healed.

Also saw some site plans for the sidewalks, roads, parking, etc. for the new barn yesterday - and was there when a business was asked to bid on some of that work - so I guess we don't have to worry
about the new rink going forward.

Rainman - can you explain why we would want an SCSU sweep of W Michigan if we are 1-0 against them and only 1-1 against SCSU. Wouldn't we want WM to sweep because that would put them in the top 20 and QWB? I am just curious.

A sweep this weekend would be huge! A spilt will not do us much for the pairwise and we would Prob even drop a few spots for now. Need to beat some quality opponents. The ECAC's occ record will hurt it down the road. 3 teams in would probably be the most we are getting come March.

I was wondering the same thing but wasn't going to say anything.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

I used a tool on College Hockey News that lets you pick the outcomes of games, recalculating the PWR based on these outcomes. I did 3 scenarios - one where St. Cloud sweeps, one where Western Mich. sweeps, and one where they split, assuming these were no other games. The St. Cloud sweep gave the most "boost" to our RPI. Ironically, while a Western Michigan sweep would put them in the RPI top 20, our bonus would only be .0001, AND our overall RPI would decrease! I don't know why, though.

Also, the quality wins bonus is divided by the total number of games played. As luck would have it, we're the only top 20 team with no RPI bonus. Go figure.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Empty, the reason that the RPI would rise with a SCSU sweep is that we played them twice, and our win was on the road which boosts it up as well. Western Michigan was a nuetral site so it doesn't get the bonus and we only played them once.

yea I get that too, maybe because the scsu series was on the road and the wm game was at a neutral site. That tool is depressing though, if you go back and change it to beat Mercyhurst both nights or even yale or providence we would be 10th in the Pairwise.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

It's been two months and eight games since our last home game, I hope that never happens again, too long. Five of the next six home, we need to pile up the points. Also hoping Cornell vs Harvard is a very physical game, usually is. Harvard has some key injuries .

The same exact thing happened to RPI and Union. Prior to last weekend, neither team had played at home since mid November. It is just how the league's block schedule broke down.
